A small place like Columbus still gives a 'low buck' team a little bit of a shot.
Winchester and Salem require HP...big time HP, not to mention a good sized set of balls.
A low buck/weekend racer, can't afford the engine and tires to run Winchester and Salem (especially for the payback), and they can't afford to destroy the car up by
POUNDING the wall.....
I saw Jeff Sands and Kenny Irwin Jr. get together and pound the wall going into 1 at Winchester at a USAC midget show, several years back. It sounded like a bomb went off when they hit the concrete. Both cars were essentially scrap afterwards.
Many factors go into a car owner/small teams decision, to run smaller tracks, and not run the wicked fast paved 1/2 miles.
