Midwest Connection - Open wheel racing pioneers - "The Great 24 Hr. Race" - 1907
 

I thought this was an interesting historical auto racing story and photo from the exhibit at the St. Louis History Museum in 2006. Shifting Gears - The Automobile Industry in St. Louis, 1890 -1930. The photo was more of a mural that took up two connecting wall sections.

"The Great 24 hr. Race" at Fairgrounds Race Track started at 10am. on 3 July 1907and finished 24 hrs. later on 4 July 1907. This dirt track was lit with 130 gasoline lamps, which allowed the 5,000 to 8,000 spectators to see the race clearly. The winner was a Jackson race car driven by Bob Burman and E.F. Schuefler. The car had only one minor repair done during the race, but the tires had to be changed four times. :Steer

Note: Bob Burman also raced in the first Indy 500 in 1911. He drove a Benz, and finished 19th this day.
