Rear axle question

How do you determine what length axle tubes you need to run For your rear end? Is it manufacturer dependent?

I am not exactly sure how many options there are from the rear end makers but for a sprint car I think the only options are long splines, medium and short. You are going to want the longest option available if your running dirt. I don't know about midgets.
