Winston Speedway's Woes
Although they only had one sprint race scheduled there this year, a GLSS event in August, the track had been a staple on the SOD schedule in years' past.
Sprints, or not, this is sad news for us fans up the Michigan way. ************ http://racewinston.com/news/?NewsId=38788 Special Announcement by Winston Speedway First and foremost, Winston Speedway IS NOT closed, but due to recent events we have been forced to make a business decision and only run special events for the remainder of the 2016 racing season. We appreciate every driver and every fan that has participated and supported the track and hope for the continued support because without it Winston Speedway very well may close. We will continue to run demolition derbies and special events. Our next event will be July 1st for the American Ethanol Late Model Tour with a $4000 to win special. We will also be running the $600 to win Kenny B Memorial stock car special ($100 to start), $200 to win 4 cylinder special and the Michigan Dirt Modifieds. July 22nd we will be running a $1500 to win Michigan Dirt Cup Modified special, a $1200 to win Late Model special presented by APS Performance, $500 to win Epplett Memorial stock car special, $200 to win 4 cylinder special and Michigan Dirt Modifieds. There will be more to follow and we will post updates via Facebook and our website. WWW.RACEWINSTON.COM |
Re: Winston Speedway's Woes
SOD was scheduled July 15. Winston pulled the plug on that. GLSS is scheduled August 12, and last I talked to Barry, that was still on.

I always liked Winston. It is a nice little track. I hope they can pull the nose up on this thing, or at least keep it leveled off. By looking at their website and weekly results, nearly half of their scheduled season so far has been rained out. I also thought the guy who owns it bought Thunderbird Raceway this Winter and reopened it. However one cannot find any info via the Thunderbird Raceway website other than it has been reopened. I know they have a couple of sprint races on the docket there this year, too. Let's hope for the best. |

And SOD is back on at Winston........................................... ...................
From all accounts that I have heard (haven't been there myself), Thunderbird is packing the place and going gangbusters. GLSS is there Saturday night. |
Re: Winston Speedway's Woes
Sad to hear, we've gone there w/ the MTS bunch & stands looked pretty full, got a large framed picture of the MTS guys running 4 wide there:6:. Hope his other track Thunderbird is ok:32:

Re: Winston Speedway's Woes
Tom Sprague sold his interest in Winston Speedway to another guy named Ed Higgins who does have a ******** background (http://www.mlive.com/news/muskegon/i...dward_l_1.html). Higgins hired a long time Michigan racer Dan Dykman to manage the track, but for whatever reason Dykman resigned from Winston Speedway a very short time ago. After that it was announced that Winston would run a partial schedule.
On June 10th Winston posted the following message on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/WinstonSpeedway Due to the negative and derogatory comments on social media, Jeremy Holman, Aaron Morey and Anji Morey have been banned from Winston Speedway for the span of two years. Any form of negative social media in any form about Winston Speedway, its officials, or sponsors will not be tolerated. Drivers are responsible for the actions of their family members, spouses and pit crew. If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions about the race track, we ask that you please go to the proper official or manager in a formal way through either instant message, email or by mail and we will try to resolve the matter appropriately. There are certainly some woes in that area of Michigan. As for Thunderbird, Tom Sprague (former owner of Winston) now owns and operates that facility. Excellent car & fan turnout thus far for a resurrected track. It should also be noted that when Tom had Winston he had excellent fan and car counts as well. |
Re: Winston Speedway's Woes
I've heard nothing but great things about Thunderbird so far. Hopefully, they will get huge support for the GLSS show tomorrow night. I won't be there, but should be there for future sprint shows. Based on what I've heard, I'm pretty excited to race there.
