More info on the "other" track at Columbus
Maybe Danny B, or Sprintmandave can figure out how to include the article in yesterday's The Republic, but it was quite interesting, and picked up where the original questions had ended. Seems there was "another" track at Columbus, In, it was indeed in the Taylorsville/Edinburg area, near Driftwood River, and was "officially" the Terrace Lake track, and "unofficially" as the "Hillbilly Park, and evidently was in action in the late 40's, early 50's. Hopefully someone will be able to provide a link to this article, as it is quite interesting, and mentions some of the drivers names that I remember, one being Crowbar Taylor, and Justin King, who went on to be a well known midget racer, and I remember both very well, Justin had a Cab Company, across the street where I worked at a Ford garage, and boy, were they beauties, he always fired them up, before going racing, and it really made this young lad then, heart beat go up. The story ends with the question, has anyone ever heard of a Nascar driver named "Crowbar"! Bob

Re: More info on the "other" track at Columbus
I saw that, too, Bob and, old as I am (62 and counting), I had never heard of this track. I have been to a few family reunions at Helfon Park, but never knew a track was nearby.
Dave may well remember it and maybe Butch Wilkerson as well. I'll see if I can somehow put that article on here. Harry (MacCawley) doesn't know a lot about racing, but he is a decent local historian. |
Re: More info on the "other" track at Columbus
I love the history of racing and the old tracks. I just keep on finding old tracks in my state. I'd love to see this article if someone could post it.:6:

Re: More info on the "other" track at Columbus
here I thought you were referring to the new 1/2 paved high banked track their building in Columbus, oh. as part of a big motorsports park and educational/ retail complex, if they ever get the politicians to approve it and get their asses in gear!

I remember "Hillbilly Park" and the track, and even went to a race or two there in the 50's. They also had Country music shows there.

Re: More info on the "other" track at Columbus
Jim Berry says there were 3 tracks in that the area the old 25th street fairgrounds. The "hole in the ground" on hwy 7 and the current track at the fairgrounds. he thinks the "hole" was a 1/4 mile flat track, said his dad won a feature there back in the day. Apparently there was one up here in my area near richmond/centerville area as well, he remembers alot of the old tracks.
