ISW fill me in

I have attended a few Indiana Sprint Week races, and i really think this a great week of raceing. My question is why do they never hit the asphault? We have some of the best short tracks in the nation.

Are you sure you attended some ISW races? I ran some ASPHAULT to get from race to race every year I've went. I thought that was what ASPHAULT was for!

One big draw for fans during sprint week is the car count and seeing the local track racers going against USAC guys. Both of which would not be as great if they ran on pavement.

It's a valid question and not out of the realm of possibility since most of the teams are centrally located and could easily grab their asphalt set up to run the next night. Personally, I love the asphalt sprints and with great tracks like Winchester, Salem and IRP close-by, I'd like to see it happen. But I wouldn't hold your breath.

I suspect the truth lies in standard hillbilly logic: "Boy, this is the way we've always dun it and this is the way it'll always be dun!!"

I also believe that USAC does not "own" the name Indiana Sprint Week. They are only the current caretakers and they could be bounced from it if the track promoters decided (there were rumors of this a few years back) and let another group sanction ISW.

Essentially, with the Burg, Gas City, Kokomo, Bloomington and Haubstadt, all you've got is the KISS series run on consecutive nights instead of strung out over a few months. The only non-KISS track is Kamp and they are a very recent add.
The only other difference from KISS is the ISW runs under one sanction and one set of rules with a higher payout.

Maybe someday USAC could run a regional pavement week for sprints and midgets with a bigger purse. Run at Winchester, Salem, IRP, Toledo, Sandusky, Kil-Kare and perhaps a track in Michigan like Berlin or Kalamazoo. And then there are the other possible tracks in Indiana like Angola, Baer Field, Plymouth, Illiana. I've never been to them, so I don't know what they are like or capable of. You may have noticed I left off Anderson. IMO, except for the Little500, the sprint races at Anderson are not very exciting.

Part of the interest in dirt ISW is the car count - 40/50/60 cars each night.

Pavement show - 25 cars a night.

Sprint car races are short - fans like to see lots of heats/consi - to make for a great evening.

This is what dirt ISW is all about -- Every year - packed stands -- Car count - car quality - lots of shows close together -- This formula works! I see no reason to change.

I would like to see an experiment with pavement racing.(I like the dirt better, but I have nothing against pavement)

I think the best shot would be to go to Salem, maybe they could make that their Sprint-Midget double header weekend. They couldd run at Bloomington of Friday, Salem on Saturday and Tri-State on Sunday. Tri-State used to run Sunday so this is not a major change.

If it works it could make ISW more exciting. If it does not work, it would be an interesting experiment.

Agreed, the car counts at pavement shows is lower. Of course, one could say that their might be more pavement teams if there was more incentive. Making some paved shows part of ISW might add to that incentive.

The driver that wins the overall ISW title supposedly has earned the right to be considered THE MAN of traditional sprints in the state. But, when I think of non wing sprints in Indiana, I think of more than just dirt. The classic tradition of non wing sprints leading to the Brickyard from a diverse background.

There is no other hot bed of sprinting in the country that also has a legacy in pavement. They don't run their 410 sprints on pavement in Pennsylvania, or Iowa, or out West. But they do in Indiana (both winged and non winged). And I think that's great. It's one of the unique qualities of the Hoosier state and you've got two of the most awesome tracks: Winchester and Salem.

I think it would only be fitting that the TOP GUN of ISW should have to prove themselves on both types of track.

ISW the way it is now is great run them on dirt only if they want to run another week during the year on just asphalt tracks then set them up that way but do not mix the speedweeks with dirt and asphalt keep them seperated.
