Sherwin Armstrong dies at 55
 

Sherwin Armstrong has died at the age of 55-years old on Sunday February 10 after an extended illness. Born on December 12, 1957, Armstrong was the son of USAC Indy Car, Sprint Car & Midget Car owner Sherman Armstrong.

Sherwin raced midgets from 1981 to 1984. His best career finish was third in the inaugural 4 Crown Nationals USAC Midget Feature at Eldora in 1981. He was 19th in the 1981 USAC National Midget Points.

Armstrong suffered a crushed vertebra, broken collarbone, nose and finger during a heat race accident in the USAC/Badger co-sanctioned event on June 1, 1984 at Hales Corners Speedway (Franklin, WI), ending his driving career. Armstrong was hospitlaized for several days in a Milwaukee Hospital following back surgery.

His brother Sherman "JR" Armstrong also competed in USAC and various series during the 80's.

A memorial service for Sherwin will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Beeson Clubhouse 900 Beeson Dr Winchester, IN on Sunday, Feburary 24.

Is Sherman( the old man) still alive or did he die in prison?

Seems to me that he passed away some time back. I would say probably 7-8 years ago if memory serves me correctly. I think he was out of the slammer by then. I could be wrong however.

I was at Hales Corners June 1 1984. It was a bad
one. My thoughts-prayer's with Armstrongs. Always
enjoyed watching the brother's race. Late post.
