Airborne indy va. Nascar
 

Anyone have stats on how many indy and nascar cars have gotten airborne in the past 5 or 10 years ? Racing is dangerous in all forms. The risk will always be there.

I know of two at least in NASCAR @ Talladega. Rusty Wallace and Carl Edwards both coming off of the tri-oval. Wallace ended up in the infield while Edwards was in the catch fence. And longer ago, Richard Petty was quite the show as well taking out a rather large section of catch fence there.

To be fair Rusty's was a year before roof flaps (1993) and there was still grass coming out of the tri oval, unless theres one i dont remember. From the top of my head that got air Aj allmendinger (2010), Carl Edwards (2009), Elliott Sadler (2003,2004) Ryan Newman (2002, 2004, 2009) Scott Riggs (2006?) Michael Waltrip, Bobby Labonte (2001), Tony Stewart (2001).

Im know theres others that Im not thinking of.....

Being a older gent I seen alot of carnage, alot of it first hand. Some would be my friends racing in t-shirts with 50 gallons of gas, open helmet and a lap belt from a junk yard car.
Now you have really safe cars and barriers but anyone that races in any car going over 200 mph has to know that it could happen at anytime.
Theres nothing wrong with the cars and speeds that are being raced today, what might be the problem is who gets to race them. It always amazes me that you can put a bunch of 410's on a track and they can go nuts without drivers crashing everybody, but put the suppossedly best drivers in a Indycar or Nascar and they cant get a few laps in without someone taking out the pack.
Nobody likes death or injury, but thats just a part of racing, when it isnt part then the last bit of life has left the sport.
This might sound sick to some of you but as a family we've sat around the racecars and as a family we all figure it wouldnt be a bad way to go. My wive see's me grinning when I sit in my car and she has said before that for me crashing to my end wouldnt be that bad compared to other ways you can go. I passed away twice on a life flight, just wasnt my time. When it's your time, it's your time. We just had a truck crash here. The guy survived a 150 plunge in a big rig unhurt. Crawled up the hill and was run over by another truck just as he poked his head onto the roads shoulder., killed instantly. When death wants you it takes you, might as well be living life at the time.

Let's not forget when Edwards sent keselowski into the wall upside down at Atlanta

And who was the guy that flipped pretty bad at Atlanta and all the teams gave him parts to run the next week?

Michael McDowells wild ride at Texas:

I dont remember it happening at Atlanta, but Carl Long flipped at Rockingham in 2004 and everyone was helping him get back on the track the following week.


Those were both crazy wrecks. McDowells car just snapped and took off, and Longs wreck was amazing because of the speeds not being as fast at the Rock.

I witnessed Rusty Wallace flipping wildly down the back stretch at Daytona late '80's or early '90's, don't really remember the year. It was certainly earlier than the five to ten year period the orginial poster was talking about. I personally don't really see the need for this post, cars in both divisions have flipped over the years, sometimes the racer can luckily walk away and other times the accident ends tragically like it did for Dan.

The important thing is that something is learned to help improve safety for racers in all divisions from Dan's tragic death. Not how many times a car has gotten airborne in Indy Car vs Nascar.

Enough venting from me!
