Thank you Brian for the link. I do remember Page and him winning a lot. I remember when he was hurt in that accident but I had no idea that he was hurt that bad. I just thought it was bad enough that he didn't get back in a car.
Man, I feel for Parnelli, Judy, PJ, and all the rest of the family for having to go through that! It must have been HELL on Earth watching him fight for his life and then struggle with a severe brain injury for the rest of his life. Thanks again! Hey Brian, Good luck that the Chili Bowl! |
Re: Thought some of you might be interested
This a newer project.
It's funny to look at how events in one persons life affects the lives of others. After Page had the outstanding year in 1993 with Kunz and in his own car, he went to the 9 team in what was sure to be a championship year. He brought with him the beginning of the Ford Midget motor program. The motors were being done by Vesco with support from Yates Racing. The 9 team had switched to the Brayton V6 and was having what turned out to be a down year for them. The Vesco Ford was fast but not very reliable. After the best Chili Bowl race ever(In my opinion) between Page,P.J.,Kinser,Stevie Reeves and Andy Hillenburg and what was sure to be a championship year for Page, 1994 turned out to be a frustrating year. After 1994, 4-Crown to be exact; Page was set to move to NASCAR and basically the Ford midget deal was going to be done as well. At least it didn't have a definate future. Well, the 4-Crown never really ever ended for Page as we all know the results of that day. After Page's injuries, the Ford Midget deal was up in the air, but found a home with the 9 team and Ed Pink. As they say the rest is history. Stewart,Kahne,Irwin and Bobby East all benefited greatly from Fords help. It seems as though in life you will find a small group of people who make a huge impact on many different peoples lives. To the point where the affect people and they don't ever know it. The Jones family is one of groups. Leffler for example was like Pages' shadow. Page befriended Jason at a young age and made sure that Jason was almost always with him. Through Page and the Jones family; Jason found and made a life in motorsports. The Jones family are good people and Pages story is one of a certain amount of triumph over tragedy. They are exactly as Page said; they always play to win. I don't care if it's a board game or racing; they are one of the most competitive group of people around. It seems as if this will be a good documentry and at the end of the day when it is finished, I hope it shows people that no matter what; if you want something bad enough, you have to out work the next person to get it. The Jones family never took what they were told to be the final word and they spent several years always looking for a new program and different techniques to help Page recover. If they wouldn't have kept striving, Page would have never been able to speak again let alone walk, be married and have kids. An interesting thing about Pages' injury and his recovery. Page said that while in his coma he could hear every word that people were saying and all he wanted to do was scream out and let everyone know he was alright. I think that is an important thing for others going through the same thing to remember. Another thing that is interesting is that when he is in a go-kart at some place like the slick track; you would never know he had ever been injured. His driving talent still cames out. He may not be able to use it like he once could, but he never lost it. In many ways when I look at Tony Stewart, I see a glimpse of what it would have been for Page. Page and Tony were/are very much alike and I wish I could have seen them bring out the best of each other over these last 15 years. I think we would have been treated to one of the greatest rivalries racing would have ever seen. One thing about Page I will always remember. When Critter Malone won his first USAC race at Kokomo, Page was one of the happiest people there. Page and Critter were good friends and even though Page had problems and dropped out, he was as excited after the race as if he had won himself. That to me always summed up the kind of guy Page is. |
