Fall/Spring Sunday afternoon racing
Hello Race fans,:22:
I know I'm old but they used to pull this off all the time in the past. :23: Frankly I miss it. It would be a great chance to expose my nieces, nephews & grandkids without being in the cold night air. I even wish Kokomo would move their show up an hour in the Spring & Fall. Terre Haute had some good ones in the past. It's been years ago but I've seen some very good racing & crowds at these type of events and at many different tracks. :6: I would have even rescheduled the washed out D.O. event for this Sunday and bump up the times instead of doing Halloween. :19: I think they may have just hurt the crowd turnout.:14: Especially the kids who we need interested in this sport. :13: Don't get me wrong, I have attended many of the D.O. events:35:. They are great,:8: especially so for the kids(open wheel racing future). They make an impression. My son, still talks about going across the track meeting, seeing the drivers, the cars, being on the track etc. and that was many years ago maybe even the 1st one D.O. had. Hey, in my humble opinion, I'm just saying there are opportunities that are being missed. I would welcome any comments/opinions especially from people now operating or involved with tracks(past or present). Of course easy for me to say right I'm just an old blue collar, hard working man (son of a flagman, track operator, county fair secretary/manager, rode my 1st water truck, on track, at age 5) spending some some cash at the track. :22::22: |
Re: Fall/Spring Sunday afternoon racing
I'll have to say I agree. My Dad took me to many Sunday afternoon races at Eldora, New Bremen, Winchester, etc back in the day, and I've been hooked as a fan, and then involved in some form ever since. We did some of the Sat. evening events as well. But, what sticks with me were the Sunday shows that allowed us to hang around and go into the pits, since I wouldn't let Dad skip out on that part during the afternoon races.
Getting to try out the fit of a few sprint cars as a kid sticks with you forever....:6: |

I have to say my favorite day trips were to Terre Haute on Sunday afternoons, Sitting in turn one watching whatever my pop took me over to see the spring/fall Sunday. Good Times!! I also loved going to Salem & Winchester on Sunday afternoons you just cant beat it in my book.

I think this is one reason why I have such great memories of DuQuoin. You go to the races all summer long at night. Then suddenly Labor Day weekend rolls around, and you are back at a dirt track...but it's during the day, a whole different feel.
I know that with football on tv it makes it tough for promoters, but I would love a Fall Sunday afternoon race at any of my favorite tracks like Granite, Pevely, Terre Haute, and Haubstadt |
Re: Fall/Spring Sunday afternoon racing
As I get older I find the cold bothers me a lot more than it used to. But on the other hand, daytime dirt racing often leaves much to be desired. The daytime race last Sunday at the Devils Bowl was both comfortable and they had a decent track all day long, but that in my experience is not the norm.
Last night's WoO race at Kilgore TX was cool but not unbearable. And my cold weather gear was up to the challenge. I didn't even need to use my hand warmers, although I did wear my gloves and ski mask some. |
