Track Records
 

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a website that lists track records. Many track sites do not list track records and its really hard to find them sometime.

I just find track records very interesting as well as comparing different types of cars on the same track.

One that I dont get is at Winchester they only ran 13.5 @ about 132mph but at Toledo just 2 weeks ago jason blonde ran 12.74 @ 141mph. Both half miles. i always thought winchester was faster.

anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably the biggest difference in those times is that I believe Winchester was during the day and Toledo was at night. A cooler track is going to have more grip. Even if its just a 75 degree day the asphalt itself is going to hold more heat than the ambient temperatures. I'm assuming that you're talking about the AVSS shows at both tracks.

It could also be that even though Winchester is higher banked, the turns are quite a bit tighter than Toledo's more sweeping turns. Just thinking out loud on this.

usac used to have a certain way they used to measure tracks. something like 12' out from the inside rail? they being usac have mostly called Toledo and Berlin a 7/16 mile.

ya i guess i dont know if toledo is considered a half mile or 7/16 like berlin is. When you figure out average speed it makes a big difference. For instance a 13 second lap on a half mile is 138.46mph and on a 7/16 that would only be 121.15mph

There is another factor to be considered. The point at which the track is measured does not indicate the actual distance traveled. If the track is measured close to the bottom but the racing line is at the top of the track the distance traveled will exceed the distance that the track is using to convert speeds. Speeds therefore will appear to be slower than what it actually is. Conversely a track measured at the top, but with a low racing groove will result in cars traveling less than the actual distance of the track and can result in speeds quicker than they actually are.

As an illustration of my point traveling .450 miles = 2376 ft, .5 miles = 2640 ft, .550 miles = 2904 ft. A difference of 264 feet for every .05 of a mile. Obviously factors such as grip, banking and turning radius make up for traveling that greater distance at some tracks.

There is no way Toledo is a half mile. You could fit it inside of Eldora, and that's not quite a half mile.

AVSS qualifying was at 5:00 in the afternoon at Toledo. I have walked the infield of Winchester, Eldora and Toledo many times. If you use Microsoft Virtual Maps and zoom into 100 yards, Eldora is the widest from frontstrech to backstretch, and the shortest from outside of 1-2 to outside of 3-4. I'm no surveyor, but I don't think you can fit Toledo inside of Eldora.

Thanks for the visual evidence. I have been to all three and I couldn't imagine being able to put Toledo inside of Eldora. A good point also about the qualifying time at Toledo. I was there and it was still warm when they qualified.

In my opinion Winchester has higher top speeds, but because of the shape it is harder to sustain those speeds in the corner, even if your nearly wide open you still scrub a lot off. Toledo has a perfect layout and pretty fresh pavement making the speed really sustainable. Short straightaways but long sweeping corners, and decent banking. I don't think the top speed is what it is at Winchester or Salem even, but you really hold onto the speed all the way around the track.
