I'm seeing that in 1970, Poland ran a #8 for an owner named "Smith". Any chance that was an add-on 2 after the 8? in the lower photo? Don't expect this will help, but maybe...

In 1970 the Smith 8 as probably the Smith Speed Shop car of Ray and Cissy Smith from Eaton, Ohio. I looked in John Mahoney's book at the picture of Jimmy Smith going out of Dayton but the picture is of the bottom of the car. I remember that car being a little more square in the body but it was June 1,1969 so my memory is a little fuzzy. I don't remember the owner either I just remember Jimmy Smith retired on the spot after he nearly drowned in a pond off the backstretch. Unfortunately he didn't stayed retired and lost his life at Eldora later

Duke, I was talking to Jim Simon the other night and I stated the same thing about Jimmy Smith, I just can't think of the car owners name.

Checked the '69 Sprint Car Pictorial and that same photo is included-the race write-up mentions the car Smith rode out o' the park was the Vitte #59. Double-checked the Hungness USAC Sprint History, no #82 was listed in owner points from 67-70. Interesting looking car, though.

Bruce, I would imagine thst is earlier than 67. If a car ran only a few times and didn't make the race or finish towards the back, there would be no points. By the year 67, Poland had a regular ride in USAC with Paul Fortney. I'm thinking this is about the years 63 thru 65.
