Tony Hulman Classic from 1999

Talk about dust. Was this the Allison promoter era?

The Gerry Olson era. What a memorable race, though!

That race was a true classic! That is the dirtiest I have ever gotten at a race track but it was worth every bit of dust.

And here are Jack Hewitt's thoughts on Gerry Olson:

Even though ESPN doesn't cover races anymore, I wish atleast one race would be televised. Be a fast way to bring people back to the track as some are comparing the track to the good ole days at some of the races....even some of the people who worked on the track in the 90's.

I remember watching this with my brother at his house. Loving every minute of "WHAT WE COULD SEE" They did this shot down the straight from turn one and about the flagstand you could see pletch/JJ . If Im not correct, wasn't Scheffel running up front for awhile untill a flat or something?

Anyway, great times. I had never seen a THAT race before that, Still haven't in person. That will change this year as I visit the track that matched that one in dust last year. KAMP and THAT for Sprintweek.

They would and did, Bring money! If you'll notice Penzoil was the sprintweek sponsor and I would imagine footted some of the bill.

Right now big sponsorship is gonna be rare. Mopars on life support. Valvoline? Hardly hear from them anymore. STP, Same. Sometimes I think they get more return from badmitten than their own markets.

Can't wait to see you there......

Now that the Action Track is no longer in danger, the dragstrip next door is. The current promoters was a partnership, one partner died last year. The other partner hasn't been paying the bill. At the point there will be no racing at the strip this year and they are trying to sell the assests.

Bumped for pletchfan,

pletchfan, would you like to share your memories of that night at THAT in 1999?

I wish I was there, but that was the most excited I had ever been watching a race on TV. It was amazing the way Pletch could drive through right through the middle of the turns, forming his own groove, while everyone else was seeking moisture near the outside and inside guardrails.

From 21st to 1st, then a front right tire going down, and he still held on for the win. Too bad there was no post-race interview. 1999 was a great year of racing for TP if I remember correctly. :thumb
