Would like to hear opinions and advice on correct methods for straightening midget axles. Would like to hear advice if people have straightened an axle with success and method used.

Front or rear?

Re: axle straightening
We straighten over 100 rear axles a year. Midget and Sprint mostly.
First thing is patience. The next is patience and the third is patience. We will not straighten the Sprint or Midget L/W axles. If you are using a press or what have you, just remember to be careful and not put dents in the axle. We never use heat. |

Re: axle straightening
:O:Was just wondering out of curiousity. With safety in mind for a rear midget
lightweight aluminum axel. Would it be out of the question to straighten the axel with conventional methods for straightening, then cut the axel in half at some predetermined point along it's length, "V" groove the edges of both halves of the axel, then insert a ID tube into the straightened axel, then placing the axel inside of a gig that prevents warpage/bending then weld along the joint 360 degrees similar to the method they use "pipe" welding, then use a non- destructive test such as X-raying to test for any voids? Sincerely, Larry Otani P.S. And thanks for your time and consideration.:O: |

In word Larry "NO" it is not possible as the grade of material used is not suitable for welding.
Wobbler, I was thinking about what I was suggesting about the welding of an inner tube (?)...lol to the straightened outer tube axel when it becomes bent and you restraighten it. 2) How about just pinning the inner tube to the straightened outer tube? a) drill a few holes equally space on the outer axel that penetrates the supporting inner tube. 1) Press in a few, qty 6 tight tolerance pins into the qty 6 closely match drilled holes and the outer straightened tube will hold the inner tube in place and the inner tube is just like another axel tube inside the straightened outer axel tube. Re: axle straightening
I have heard that depending how far it is bent determines whether or not to straighten it. I think the # was 80 or 90 thousands out is pushing it, somebody correct me if i am wrong. Like "Leading Edge has already said, I was told to try straightening standard weight axles only.
To the gentleman asking about cutting and splicing a midget axle, not to offendyou but, that is an awful idea! That is how Angel's are made my friend. Drive safe, and avoid contact. |
