October 16th tragedies

On October 16, 1977, we lost James McElreath in a USAC sprint car race at Winchester, In
I was present on that sad day
On October 16, 2011, we lost Dan Wheldon, the 2005 and 2011 Indianapolis 500 winner, in a violent IndyCar crash at Las Vegas.
Two great drivers lost in the prime of life.

We were present at Winchester 45 yrs ago, after getting married the day before. James was a really nice guy, destined for greatness. May he Race in Peace. Oh, what might have been.

Sad day indeed

After James death his friend Bobby Marshall spent the rest of his life keeping James' memory alive. After Bobby's stories it felt like I knew James. Sure miss those stories.

I've heard many stories about James. I did not know him but knew Jim, his father. After Jim and Shirley passed I acquired a few items from the family.

Here are a couple of my favorites James items.

STP Jumpsuit
Styrofoam pith helmet
