Power steering question
 

A few weeks ago, I fired my sprint car up for the first time.Power steering fluid was really pouring out of the pump area, but i couldn't see exactly where.So i shut it down.It is a older KSE pump and i am using a Profile box from probably 1990 or so.Could I have had the pressure line reversed? There is no markings on the box's fittings that I can see to tell me which is which.I used the fitting that would be closer to the seat for the pressure line.If I had them reversed, would fluid have started pumping out through the reservoir tank? The car steered, but driver said it felt questionable.Could the front seal of the pump cause the fluid to leak in the heavy amount it did so quickly?

Are these items you have used before? More than likely the seal is out of the pump. Question is, what caused it to go out. Normal use or something else.

If this is a pump that you bought from a midget owner, it could have been reversed and not running the proper direction for the direction of your motor causing the seals to get pushed out when you started your car.

Some of the extremely old pumps have a shaft with a little different design(on the end near the seal) and if the shaft was replaced with a new one, that can cause a leak. Very uncommon though, but I have seen it once.

KSE has had basically three different pump designs that where used mostly in Sprint Cars.
-The oldest of which is basically oblong with 3 1/4" bolts holding it on.
- The warhorse for years was a black one that was held together with two bolts. It had a feature where it could be reversed for either sprint or some midget applications.
-The latest is a blue one that cannot be reversed and puts out more consistant line pressure than the others.

I would call profile to make sure that you have the lines hooked up properly as well, but the fitting sizes should have walked you through that pretty easy.

Scott, it was a swap meet pump bought from a sprint guy.The fittings on the steering box are the same.Is profile still in business? I googled them and nothing came up. The KSE pump has a little black rectangular box on top.

That pump can be reversed, but it shouldn't have been if it came from a sprint car.

Probably the seals are out.

Usally if you hook lines up backwards on the gear, when the car fires it will make a hard turn to the left. I had a brain fart and did this last year, almost hit a truck. I think you will find as scott said the seal is out on pump.

A seal is correct.Pump was taken apart and there was NO seal in it at all.It was a swap meet special.Said it worked last time the guy used it.It worked all right..just poured fluid.LOL thanks all for your responses.
