Spoon river?

Would a usac sprint car race be good there? Good track? Good sprint car fans there?

Duke canton is a mini eldora and it would be a great racetrack if they water it correctly and it looks like it might be on the list for hopefully the 2009 Illinois speedweek they are trying to get going so this would let you check the place out.

Duke, I love the track. However, Lloyd is right. The place has been a dust bowl almost every time I went. Also, I don't know if they have lights in the parking lot yet, and it has (or had the last time I was there) a lot of little ruts/streams beds running through it. I believe it was a couple of years ago they ended way after midnight. We went the next race so show support. Someone had to go to the hospital and we had a long wait for another ambulance, but it finally came. Then, during a yellow, the red was thrown. Turns out that there are apparently only two ambulances for the whole county (rural area) and the one at the track had to leave for an emergency. Long wait until we got another one. We stayed and saw Cameron Dodson win his first sprint car race, but it was late. Within the last year or so they also canceled what was supposed to be the last leg of a 3 race weekend in central Illinois a day or so before the race. The fact that any fans come speaks to how good the fans around hear really are.

It is very wide and very high banked. 4 sprint cars wide or 5 midgets wide is not a problem. If properly prepared and managed, I think it would be great. There is no track in the country I would rather see become a well-run sprint car track. It could be great!

Re: Spoon river?

A few years ago I went to the Tom Knowles memorial, a sprint/midget show. The place was packed (and Donnie Beechler was back in a sprint after getting dumped by A. J. and was incredible). The last time I went was after what was, by all accounts, a 3 AM disaster. The crowd was small, but there had been bad publicity and a lot of hard feelings after the last sprint race, so I'm not sure that was a fair measure. It's in West Central Illinois, 20-30 miles from Peoria, so there should be a crowd for a well-promoted race. The last time I was going, they canceled it. However, I would give them another chance and go back for a non-wing race and hope for the best. Since Jacksonville (bless them!) is the only non-wing show running regularly, I would certainly think people would go. What about it, Illinois fans?

I am a Mod racer that races regularly at SRS and am a huge openwheel midget and sprint fan so I check this board often for news. With that being said Spoon is the best or second best"track" in Illinois. The annual Knowels memorial is the biggest crowd of the year. Any race that is promoted at this track always brings a good crowd and I have never talked to a driver that did not like the racetrack.
