Question about back up cars at a USAC event
Last night, Chris Windom had a nasty wreck on the first lap of the feature and the track went red. When it was determined that Chris was ok, the crew started working madly on the back up car. They were working on it for quite a while and then stopped as almost quickly as they started. I am not sure if USAC told them to stop, or if Chris told them that he was not ready to go back out.
My question is what are the rules about back up cars. I always thought that if your took the green flag in the A-main that you were not able to go to back up car, but the crew was working real hard to get it going as if they knew something that I did not. Does anybody know the answer? thanks Jon R |
Yeah couldn't go to a backup because the A-Main had started. You can go to a backup anytime between qualifying and start of the A-Main.

They would like to argue that since a lap wasn't completed they could use the backup, but as JDK stated, the green flag had flown to start the main.
