Better move the race to after the fair then 😄😄

Kydehart 7/10/17 5:17 PM

Provided that it isn't a complete washout, the wife and I will be attending The THAT for the first time. What do we need to know? My wife definitely loves her elephant ears...Lol. Thanks for any input! Wish I was going tonight.

Get there early to avoid the $5 parking fee. This will also allow you to get a good parking spot to enjoy ALL of the festivities and give you an easy departure after the races. Great venue with the fair! I love the tradition of the track, but the racing isn't as enjoyable to me as the smaller tracks. PERSONAL OPINION ONLY!

Hamby812 7/10/17 6:51 PM

I would also consider ear plugs if considering sitting under the covered section. I only sat there once but if I remember correctly it was pretty loud. This coming from someone who never wears hearing protection 🙈

I would strongly recommend walking through the tunnel to the infield and getting a good look at the cars hot lapping and getting into either turn 1 or turn 3. If you haven't experienced that perspective it is breathtaking the first time you see it.

From the Vigo County Fair Website regarding parking:

Parking

Parking fees are as follows:
Vigo County Fair Parking Fees
Free parking until 4:00 p.m.
$5.00 per car after 4:00 p.m.
$5.00 per person walk up after 4:00p.m.

flagboy55 7/10/17 8:16 PM

I hope that they actually work the track. The spring silver crown race track was BAD! Dust before even a throttle was cracked. THAT is supposed to have a cushion, not just loose dust and dirt above the groove. OK I said my piece, now weather permitting I'll see you all there Wednesday

Well the fair is going on, But if you get there by four parking is free. afterwards Idk. Part toward the west end of the grounds Turns 3/4

As others have said, If you sit in the covered section bring ear protection. If not you'll be fine, I usually sit a couple sections in the bleachers down from the covered grandstand. You get a full view of the track. It's a little hard to see turn one but a lot of action right in front of you coming off four.
Lots of race fans congregate out front of the restroom area and on the west side in the shaded area of the restroom (If your there early, bring a lawn chair and chill.

Coolers allowed, Stadium seats allowed, You'll be able to find a good seat anytime.

If you want, You can go in the infield and watch hot laps. I like to stand in the inside of 1/2 and see that RF about three feet in the air. Cars biking in one all the time.

Have fun. I plan to be there if the weather holds.

To contrast others. It's actually my favorite IN track. You'll see good drivers come from deep to top five, All kinds of creativity to make it work in the heats etc and cars darting around down the straights fighting the stagger as the straights are long and flat.

Thank you. I've always enjoyed smaller tracks more as a rule but I like to try new tracks whenever I can so I'm looking forward to it

Kydehart 7/10/17 11:58 PM

I've heard the infield right on the fence is quite a spectacle. I will definitely be walking over to check it out

Kydehart 7/11/17 12:01 AM

Thank you to everyone who replied. I can't wait to get down in the infield to watch some hot laps. My dad used to watch crown races there years ago back in the pancho carter days. He told me to be sure and hit the infield at least for a little while.

(My wife is more excited about the elephant ears than the sprint cars, I think)

Even with the dust, you have to admit it was still a good race. Windom ran away with it at the end but Leary, Swanson and I think Cockrum all battled for the lead before Windom got it. Darland went from 20th at the start to inside the top 10 and Dakota Jackson started dead last and went to 8th or 9th.

See you all Wednesday.

flagboy55 7/11/17 3:24 AM

Nate, I agree, it was a good race. However, I doubt anyone on here would say that was the kind of Terre Haute track they wanted to see. So many of us tell first timers to go into the infield at least for hotlaps and qualifications so you can see the big pitch into the corner. I can't tell you how disappointed I was watching Damien Gardner idle around the inside fence through 1&2. Some of you might say, quit your B.t.c.n.g, but that's not what I'm trying to do. I've seen what makes Terre Haute great and that was not it. Here's hoping we get some Wednesday.

btg1963 7/11/17 10:20 AM

You mentioned.... "My wife is more excited about the elephant ears than the sprint cars, I think"

I don't believe she will be disappointed! ENJOY the event!

Re: Terre Haute forecast

I like the track because I think Sprints are awesome when they are stepping out and galloping hard. Might be the only track in IN where corner entry speed is over a hundred and exit under 60. But they're on the hammer and the good guys are in the gas a hundred feet sooner and a hundred feet longer than the one's who haven't got the hang of it yet.. If the track gets real wide. A car running the wall and a car running the inside guardrail even though side by side are 60ft apart and it all comes into a narrow straight that as I said the stagger plays with em a bit. I've actually seen cars bounce off each other from the stagger swagger. (I'll Patten that term) :)

Simon_says17 7/11/17 7:59 PM

So if I get a grandstand ticket that's good for the infield too? I would like to watch hotlaps from the infield as others have suggested.

tirespinner 7/11/17 8:13 PM

Yes grandstand ticket gets you in infield, tunnel at end covered stands by turn 1 if not flooded

Just saw this myself. Good luck to Casey, our fellow IOWer and Jerry. Awesome news.

Unfortunately, the current promoter uses heavy equipment to pack the track hard, taking a lot of the action out of the Action Track. And several promoters ago brought in new dirt that is more powdery and dries out faster. And, Indiana switched to Eastern time making it basically a day race with only the feature at night. What you have now is a more tame version of what some of us got to experience pre-1999 but it's better than staying home and usually the race is good so by all means go and have fun!!

flagboy55 7/12/17 10:53 AM

The actual forecast is good for a change, but it is Terre Haute so a good forecast does not preclude precipitation. Getting ready to hop in the car and head south. Hopefully we get a wonderful night of racing. As always I'll be the cat in the red wings hat, hope to see you there

I've been to this track more and know more about this track than you ever will and just last year, the classic battle between Chris Windom and Chad Boespflug was one of the better races I can EVER remember seeing there. And just a few years before that, at the first Don Smith Classic, a duel between Robert Ballou and Jesse Hockett was a historic one. Both well after 1999. But, I'm just a race fan, not a noted track prep critic, like you.

Jerry

I'll be the guy in the BC hat and Saldana/stenhouse wood shirt with the wife that's out of my league. I'll look for the red wings hat!

Kydehart 7/12/17 12:40 PM

Just saw they lowered pit pass prices for us non members back to the usual 30. If I go that route with a pit pass am I safe assuming I can go in the infield or grandstands too?

Re: Terre Haute forecast

It's race day, it's a beautiful summer day here in Terre Haute and we have a group of drivers that have been racing one another real hard, this year. Will CJ Leary and Donnie Gentry once again rule that day or will someone else step up and stop their momentum?

Jerry

flagboy55 7/12/17 2:35 PM

Yes, K, the pit pass gets you in the stands and infield. Having lunch, will be there soon, hope to meet you

Uh oh, well my dad lived in Chicago...he passed the Blackhawks on to me...but I'll let it slide since you guys love sprint cars too. Lol

GYATK94 7/12/17 5:15 PM

Flagboy55 and I have found each other, so come find us. Hanging out in some shade near the white building outside turn 4. I'm in a Clauson Marshall shirt and Boespflug hat, and he's equipped with all Red Wings gear. We're right next to the road you have to drive on, so come say hello.

flagboy55 7/12/17 5:55 PM

Heading to turn 3

Shocking news under a rain delay at Terre Haute. It even rains there when it is not forecast to rain.

ThrowbackRacingTeam 7/12/17 7:11 PM

Best track prep in years and it rains with no rain in forecast. Hoping Isaac Chappel is ok.

Good to meet you two! Nice to put faces to the names. Too bad we got rained out but I'm sure I'll see you guys around
