The first race is history! The weekend wrapup!
Opening night of the MMSA series has come and gone. It was refreshing to me, the smell of racing fumes, the first night out having a respectful car count of 25 mini sprints on hand at Brownstown. Although this is race one of 27, I whole heartly feel that with 25 of the best mini sprints, we will see this number grow as several racers just were not quite ready yet. Seeing two sets of hot laps to start the evening, speeds were in fine shape. Some teams unload with the right setup would show greatly in hot laps. Some had to return to their trailers for major changes. For some the hot laps ended their evening, including the Henchcraft , EMI 10D of Drew Dorsett had mechanical issuses that would sideline him for the evening. Also the 45 hot rod of Brandon Griffitts would take on the same feel ,of parking it for the night due to electrical issues. The final hot lap victim was the 76H of Mike McIntosh had injector issuses. Heat one rolled onto the racing service, with 9 cars to start, but the for mentioned hot lap victims were to be in heat one, therefore heat one was cut to 6 cars. Not be overlooked still had some top quality cars to battle for the first heat win of 2017. The hot shoe from New Palestine IN, Danny Fitzgerald piloting his OSR Racing engines entry, would take the first checkers followed by Mike Miller, Cindy Chambers, Keith Arvin, Cory Meadows, and young Korbyn Hayslett. We will hear more on Danny here shortly. Heat two had 8 cars take the green, seeing second year racer Kyle Hathaway lead at the green for a few laps, till the Hoosier Speed entry driven by Andy Bradley would take full control over the race by lap 3. Hathaway would finish second followed by, last years sportsman of the year Brandon Smith, Bradley Ashford, Dean Parker, Jessie Vermillian, Dustin Griffits and Bod Griffits. The third and final heat also had 8 cars to hit the track running, but only 7 would finish. The Ohio Bandit, Ty Tilton was on a rail with his sight set on the checkers in a hot battle with 77 Justin Lewis when Tilton's Benic Shocks, Hyper Racing entry went down on power with just a lap to go. Thus allowing young Lewis to take home the heat win, followed by Rod Henning, Cody Trammell, Tim Light, Colin Miller, Blake Vermillian, Luke Easton and Ty Tilton. With a few scratches for the night, the MMSA series decided not to run a B-main, instead would start the balance of entries, 22 strong for the 20 lap A-Main. The feature rolled off the starting shoot with Kyle Hathaway leading the field to the green. Hathaway benefited from the point inversion that put him on the pole, and having the 6th starting spot to the passing point leader for the night Danny Fitzgerald. Taking the green flag, almost all cars got through turns one and two with the exception of two. Getting the worst was the 73 of Blake Vermillian geting turned and bouncing off the tractor tire putting him on his lid. They would clear the track and racing would continue. Hathaway would bring them to green for a second go around. Kyle would lead lap one with Henning, Smith, Lewis, and Bradley in tow. Rod Henning would eventully make his way around the young racers to claim the top spot for the next 4 laps. The race would be halted with the spin of 18C Cindy Chambers in turn one. Leading to the restart Henning, Bradley, Smith, and company, racing resumed Henning and Bradley dualing it out for the lead, seeing the 86 Bradley take the top spot for several circuits. Getting into heavy lap traffic was exciting for the fans, Bradley, Henning, inside, outside of traffic. Bradley on the low side and Henning on the high side. The racing would be halted another time for a spin of a back marker. Coming to green was Bradley, Henning, Fitzgerald and Lewis... 12 laps down 8 to go, once again seeing the top 3-4 checking out, but we would lose one of those 4, Danny Fitzgerald would push it to the limits in turn four and laying his machine over on its side. He would restart last and still finish a respectful 8th. The final restart would be Bradley, Henning, and Lewis with a handful of laps left the top three flat out got it on. Running down the back of the field in 4 laps, the race would get very exciting for the final two circiuts. Bradley was focused on the low line Henning and Lewis battleing the lap traffic on the middle of track. This left the top line open for the last lap of dash to the finish, with lapped cars abroad Justin Lewis went for broke passing the Henning machine with one lap to go. His focus was on the leader Bradley one car length in front, coming to the checkers Lewis had a run on the highside out of 3 and 4 but Bradley nibbed him by a wing! The race took 21 minutes, 2 yellows and 2 reds would fly! Next race will be Friday April 14th at Bloomington, non wing style then Saturday April 15th at Lincoln Park with the tin tops back on! See ya at the track! |

Re: MMSA opening night!
The weekend wrap up!
Two races took place this weekend, first race was Friday night at Bloomington Speedway. The MMSA series ran non-wing for the first time this season. Some 29 entries took to the track for one of three hot lap sessions. Here again some nailed the set up from the word go, and some left scratching their heads. Three heat races were on tap. First heat race rolled off with 10 entries, saw the OSR Performance, Double L Transport, Columbus Collision, entry driven by the Columbus IN youngster Justin Lewis take the first checkered of the evening. Following Lewis to the line was Ohio's Ty Tilton and another Ohio racer Nick Daugherty making his first appearance with the MMSA series. Second heat was to have 10 entries, but one was not able to make the call. So 9 took the green flag and another familiar name out front. The Henchcraft, EMI hot rod of Rod Henning out ran Cody Trammell and his team mate Drew Dorsett, to earn his way to the feature event. The third and final heat consisted of 9 more mini sprints, and young Kobe Allison from Lima Ohio, piloting his Ottie Cycleworx, TT Motorsports entry to his first checkers of the season. He was follow to the stripe by Ron Coleman and Andy Bradley to all earn a position for the main event. As we rushed in to the B-Main to finalize our starting grid for the A-main saw some 13 cars slated to start, but only 10 would do so. Twelve laps later saw the DC Motorsport ride of Cindy Chambers show the way to checkered flag in the B-main to lock her in to the main event. The other drivers punching their tickets to the main were, Bradley Ashford, Tim Light, and Bob Griffitts. The point provisional fell onto the shoulders of Brandon Smith, which broke in heat 1, which eventually took over the 19 of Mike Miller ride starting shot gun on the grid, thus allowing for 76A to make the show! Heading into the nights A-Main all 21 starters took the green. Cody Trammell brings them to the green, he will lead lap one followed by Bradley and Henning. Lap 3 sees Henning take the top spot via the high side. Caution one would fly seeing a few go pit side, including Winsemann, Griffitts, Hathaway, Haas, and Tilton. The race would go green for two laps, then the accident in turn 3 took place. Heat race winner Kobe Allison's car would catapult on top of the Justin Lewis ride. Allison rear tire got inside the halo bar of Lewis, taking both cars to a wicked event of both tumbling over. Henning restarts from the top spot, opens his lead up over Trammell, Bradley and company. As the race winds down Henning controls the top spot, as Andy Bradley has to fight off the Greencastle Hustler, Jesse Vermillion for a battle that Bradley would deny Vermillion his best finish in the MMSA series. Although he finished 3rd, it was a very nice run for Vermillion! Rod Henning would pick up the win, followed by Bradley, Vermillion, Dorsett, and Ryan Barr to round out top 5. Bonus were to be had, by the top ten, if they could duplicate their efforts the following night at Lincoln Park Speedway......... |
So now the MMSA rolls into Lincoln Park Speedway Saturday night April 15 for their weekend double.
With 10 guys from Friday night accomplishments having intentions to collect a bonus. But only if they can back up a top 10 finish here at Lincoln Park. After all said and done 5 of the 10 walk away with extra cash in your pocket. With all 23 drivers having signed in, we roll right into one of two hot lap sessions. All 23 cars take the green. The second hot lap session, Greencastle Indiana Billy Winsemann, would take his mini sprint and turn it on its top. Billy would walk away and eventually get his car fixed for the A main. We are now set for three highly contested heat races ! Palestine Indiana's, OS Racing Engines entry of Danny Fitzgerald would make his presence known us as he picks up the first heat win. Which eventually will score here sixth in A-Main with the most passing points for the evening. Followed by Colin Miller and Bob Griffiths to round out the rounded top three. In heat two, the Arvin Built custom fabrication, Revolt electrical solutions, hailing from Indianapolis IN, driver Keith Arivin would pick up of the victory for his first in 2017. Following Arvin to the checkers was , Kyle Hathaway and Justin Lewis to firm their positions in the main event. Heat three, heavily weighted heat race, puts first and second in points to date in this event. Andy Bradley would take off with lead, but it was short lived. Ron Henning would chase him down to steal the victory from Bradley. But with Henning win, puts Bradley on a pole for the A-main, through the passing point chart. Thus setting up at barn burner for the main event. The feature is set all 23 cars will take the green with Bradley and Miller row 1, Ashford and Arvin row 2, Henning and Fitzgerald row 3. The fast and furious A-main kicks off with 12 green flag laps with Andy Bradley jumping out front followed by Miller, with Henning and Ashford in tow. The first and only caution would fly on lap 12 when young Griffith spins in turn three. On the restart Bradley takes top spot with one lap marker, Dylan Moan, separating him and second place Rob Henning. They quickly catch back markers for the last five laps of the A-main. All along with third-place Fitzgerald and Hathaway ready to pounce if any of the two would make a mistake. No mistake was made as Bradley cruises to his second win in 17. Followed closely by Henning , Fitzgerald, Hathaway and Ryan Barr to round out the top five The series takes two weeks off before returning to the new and improved Twin City speedway on May 6 for another USAC event . |
