I haven't been there as a spectator for quite a few years. Are you allowed coolers/beer/soft drinks or food in the grandstands? Thanks.

JUSTIN GRANT ON THE BRINK OF HISTORY THIS SUNDAY AT TERRE HAUTE
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media Whether one uses the eye test, the victory lane photos or the point standings to determine how well Justin Grant’s 2017 season has begun, the fact of the matter is that his performance thus far has already rewritten the record books. Simply put, Grant has gotten off to one of the finest starts any driver has had in the history of the United States Auto Club. So fine, in fact, that he became the first driver in the history of the venerable club to capture feature victories in both the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car and USAC National Midget season openers in the very same year. Though he has already made his mark in 2017, on Sunday, April 2 at the Terre Haute Action Track in western Indiana, Grant could stand all alone as the only driver to win all three USAC National series season-openers in the same season. A number of milestones are on the line for Grant this Sunday. No driver in USAC has won at least one feature in the Silver Crown, National Sprint and National Midget divisions earlier than April 28, a mark set by the late Dave Steele in 2002. Speaking of Steele, he is the only driver to win a USAC Silver Crown and National Midget season-opening feature in one season, a feat he accomplished twice in 2002 and 2006. Steele is also just one of three drivers to have won a USAC Silver Crown and National Sprint season-opener in a year, doing so in 2005. Pancho Carter did the deed in 1978 along with Jim Keeker in 1992. On Sunday at the “Sumar Classic” in Terre Haute, Grant’s opportunity to join these exclusive clubs is right within his reach. One year ago, Grant nearly pulled off the “Sumar” victory after leading the first 93 circuits of the 100-lapper, but had to settle for second at the checkered behind C.J. Leary. After a strong third-place points showing in 2016 and consistent runs at the front, Grant will certainly be one of the favorites come Sunday to win his first career Silver Crown event on famed half-mile. After blasting from the launching pad in February down in Ocala, Fla. for a “Winter Dirt Games VIII” victory, Grant followed it up one night later by taking the runner-up spot behind Hunter Schuerenberg. In March, the storybook beginning continued onto the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin where the 26-year-old Ione, California native tallied USAC National Midget victory number one. As a result, Grant now leads both the USAC National Sprint and National Midget standings heading into April as the beginning of the USAC Silver Crown season is set to unfold this Sunday, April 2 at the Terre Haute Action Track in western Indiana. Admittedly, it’s obviously way too early to anoint Grant as the next single-season USAC Triple Crown champ when the season is just getting into the month of April, but maybe it’s not that far-fetched. At press time, Grant is the only driver to possess full-time rides to chase a championship in each of USAC’s three national divisions, leaving him as the sole hope to join Tony Stewart in 1995 and J.J. Yeley in 2003 to grab all three titles in a single-season. The prelude to Grant’s coming weekend begins this Saturday, April 1 at southeastern Indiana’s Lawrenceburg Speedway for the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars’ season debut in the Midwest aboard the Sam McGhee Motorsports No. 11. One day later, Grant makes his debut at the wheel of the combined Silver Crown team effort between Hemelgarn Enterprises and Chris Carli Motorsports at the Terre Haute Action Track for the 17th running of the “Sumar Classic.” Pit gates open for Lawrenceburg at 3pm while the front gates open at 5. Cars hit the track for hot laps at 6pm with opening ceremonies set to get underway at 7. Adult admission is $25. Kids 7-12 are $7. Children 6 and under are free! Pit passes are 30 bucks. Pit gates for the Sunday, April 2 “Sumar Classic” open at 1pm while the grandstands open at 3pm. Silver Crown hot laps begin at 3:30pm with Silver Crown qualifying pushing off at 4:40pm. Racing begins at 5:15pm. Tickets for Terre Haute can be purchased now at http://www.usactickets.com/. Adult infield tickets start at just $15 while children age 10 and under are FREE! Adult grandstand tickets are $25. Fans will receive a free pit pass upgrade with an advanced general admission ticket purchase, which is good for pit entry after 3pm only. Pit Passes are $30 for USAC/UMP Members and $35 for non-members. For fans who are unable to make the trip to Terre Haute in-person, the “Sumar Classic” will be streamed live on http://www.SpeedShiftTV.com/. Race fans can watch on-demand one day after the event at http://www.Loudpedal.TV/. I know promoters needs butts in the stands, but I have to say that this Speedshift live stream is very good. Very impressed |

Overall a great day at Terre Haute. Beautiful weather, a great field of cars, met some nice folks, and saw a few friends too. On top of that, the race was really good. Four different leaders and good battles throughout the field. I know the champ cars aren't everyone's cup of tea, but to me, they're sacred. The long races with those big cars, I love it. The track was good for the feature and had two lanes for quite a while. It was packed a little too tight for hotlaps and Qualifying, but that's really nitpicking a nice season opener. I'm glad so many people showed up, I'm glad I did.

Re: Sun Apr 2 SUMAR Classic USAC Silver Crown + UMP Modified
I thought it was a good race; really impressed with DD's drive from 20th 7th. Had some interesting conversations in the grandstand. My friend from Indy brought a friend with him. The friend was WoO driver Daryn Pittman's father. Enjoyed visiting with a couple of other recently retired gents, one of whom was making his first visit to THAT.
I really appreciate Bob Sargent and Track Enterprises for their part in keeping Silver Crown racing alive. I believe the series is gaining strength. I plan to support nearly all of the Sargent promotions. I don't have any financial interest in it; I just enjoy seeing the cars that are such an important part of racing history perform and it would be a shame if the series were to cease to exist. I am so glad that the Terre Haute Action track is alive and well. It seems to be enjoying some stability as well as growth in attendance under the Track Enterprises group. I just realized that it has been almost 50 years since I attended my first event there, the 1967 Hut Hundred. Sorry that event is no longer there, but we at least have many other events that are entertaining and worthy of our support. Also, I think Terre Haute is the best place to socialize with friends. Heck, I think I'd drive there just to do that even if they didn't have races! :3: |
Re: Sun Apr 2 SUMAR Classic USAC Silver Crown + UMP Modified
One think to keep in mind as far as the track conditions. They had rain all week in Terre haute. They probably couldn't get on the track until late Saturday or early Sunday. If they had hadn't packed it, and not over watered it, it probably would have been very rough. I had no complaints. Saw 2 good races this weekend. Good job by all involved.

Re: Sun Apr 2 SUMAR Classic USAC Silver Crown + UMP Modified
My lengthy trip from central Kansas to central Illinois to meet up with ISF and the subsequent trip to THAT (thanks again, buddy) was well worth it to me. OK, the track lost a bit in the second half, but seeing a beautiful (and full) field of SC cars and hearing them at full chat is always a treat. Heck, it was worth the price of admission just watching Justin Grant pitch that big momma into 1 & 3 from about halfway down the straightaway! The weather was great, the crowd was great, I got to meet up with some old friends...what's not to like. Thank you to USAC, the Action Track all those involved in the Silver Crown series! With any luck, I'll see them again in about 4 weeks.

Re: Sun Apr 2 SUMAR Classic USAC Silver Crown + UMP Modified
Our pleasure, Bob. We look forward to doin' it all again X 3 in July.
We enjoyed this year's Sumar Classic as much as we've enjoyed a race in a some time. Perfect day. Great fellowship. An unhealthy portion of red meat cooked over hot charcoal. A cold bloody mary with an Ultra for a wash. A large field of the coolest and most beautiful racecars known to exist with the really fast guys drifting those big momma's into #1 sideways at over 100 MPH. If I had gone home following qualifying I'd have felt I had got my money's worth. Did the track become a huggy pole deal from about 1/2 way on? Yep, but we loved every lap which included watching DD patiently work his way into a solid top 10 from WAY back in the field and JCJ score yet another solid top 5 run. These races can always be better but if ya' didn't enjoy the total experience as a whole I reckon you should examine your status as a race fan. It's all been said before but I'll happily echo it again. THANK YOU Sarge for what you do in support of our all time favorite division of racecars. |

Made the trip down from Green Bay Wisconsin, via Tipton Iowa. We both enjoyed the show bought a grandstand pass . We also used it to watch hot laps from the infield. I have been wanting to get to a Champ car race for a long time, so I checked that off the bucket list. Now need to see them on a mile dirt track. Is it common to have two hot laps sessions, or was it because of the track condtions?

Re: Sun Apr 2 SUMAR Classic USAC Silver Crown + UMP Modified
Took my young sons to their first ever automobile race. The big one seemed to enjoy it. The little one was still more interested in the cookies we brought along.
Man, that Justin Grant was slinging it hard into turn three. He wasn't worth a dang in the race but at least he was spectacular throwing that thing into the corner. Something that sticks out in my mind was when I discovered my 6 year old playing with syringe he found laying in the infield grass. That's sort of disappointing but no fault of the track, the sport, or the promoter. I won't let it ruin my enjoyment of the good race. I really thought Leary was going to give us a thrill there the last ten laps. |
Great day, Nice to see a great car count and good racing. Met a gentleman
Named Cigar Dave . Worth the price of admission alone. |
Cigar Dave is a character. I had the pleasure of shooting the bull with him quite a while my self. In his own words, his "no filter" observations are always entertaining. Haven't seen him in a few years, glad I ran into him. Also great to see Brent and oppweld and met a couple more new folks. Always good to enjoy the company of people who love the sport as much as I do!

Re: Sun Apr 2 SUMAR Classic USAC Silver Crown + UMP Modified
I came out from Philadelphia, PA area with a stop in the Ft Knox area to visit my daughter, son-in-law, and two grandsons. Went to Lawrenceburg for USAC sprints then back to Ft. Knox. Left Ft. Knox at 12 noon and got to Terre Haute just in time to get my ticket and watch hot laps. Got home in Phila around 4:45 Monday night. I am sure you people in the Mid-West realize what great racing you have and I am more than happy to sit through what ever delay there is to see such great racing. Silver Crown racing is a breed like no other and I am old enough to remember when AAA ran dirt champ cars at Williams Grove back in the 50's. Hot laps were worth the price of admission at THAT! Now that Bridgeport, NJ has three tracks in their makeup, we need some promoter to put the on the "USAC Threesome" on the agenda. Midgets on the 1/4 mile, Sprints on the 3/8 mile, and Silver Crown on the 5/8 mile.
