It appears that modified's are the headline division of this show.

Since when are POWRi National Midgets a support class?

I understand they're reconfiguring the track. What's it going to be comparable to?

Just thinking about gear for a chain-drive D2 car.

From the pictures I saw, looks like a big 3/8ths. I can imagine too many Midgets teams driiving that far on a Thurs when they wouldn't go to Granite City right in their backyard.

Look for some of the Badger guys to come across the border. Sun Prairie is PowrI sanctioned.

This should be a pretty cool show, at a top notch facility..

I'm not "agreeing" that they would be considered a "support class", but would bet there will be more Mods than POWRi NATIONAL midgets there...(NOT saying between the two midget classes running that night, there might be more "midgets" of any sort there tho...). Time will tell...

Car count doesn't necessarily constitute what class is considered the headline division. Generally it's payout. There is no question there are many more modified's around the Midwest than just about any other class of racecars. With that said, in our neck of the woods (we're less than an hour from Route 66) the mods are nearly universal in their role as a support class and rarely are the headline division. No knock on the mods, just the way it is here.

I was merely taken aback a bit seeing they are the headliner of a show where POWRi National midgets are involved.

I sometimes think that the people on this board lose track of the forest because of all of the trees. While we can set here and discuss the merits of POWRi vs USAC, National midgets and D2 midgets, the casual fan normally cannot.

Most casual fans know what a modified is. Do we think that most casual fans know what a POWRi midget is?

Also, modified drivers will show up for an increased purse, and there are many multiples more modifieds than midgets. Time and time again, midget drivers have shown that money is not the most important item to them.

Great to see the 'ol dirt track open back up. Hopefully the fans will come out and watch.

It is great to see them race cars there again rather demolish them. I know there are plenty of open wheel fans in Illinois, but this area is mostly late model/modified types. I know Joliet has a long history of midget racing but from my observation it was a niche crowd. The late Sante Fe speedway, while having some great open wheel races, was a legendary late model track and nearby Kankakee speedway the same. While I don't claim to know anyone of the new promotion team other than by name, it should be noted that they have deep LM roots. That being said, if the powri show up with the type of program they are capable of, it won't matter who gets top billing, the show will speak for itself. I just hope enough midget teams are up to running a track bigger than a sixth mile.

What? I'm not sure how to take that. The D2's will be running in Georgia in February on a fast 3/8 and the Midgets go to Belleville, which is a very fast 1/2 mile. Midgets race more & bigger places than the Chilli Bowl... Geez.

Your 78 posts are showing your newness to this board. This is another item that always gets a lot of emotion. :deadhorse:

You are correct Belleville is a very fast 1/2 mile, but until a recent effort to help with the starting money. It was having a very hard time getting cars.

The Gold Crown at Tri-City was another high paying midget event that struggled to get good car counts.

While USAC will book the bigger tracks, it appears that POWRi has traditionally stayed away from the larger tracks.

flagboy55 2/9/17 4:49 AM

Aces, that was a bit of sarcasm from me as there has been plenty of our esteemed brethren on IOW who advocate midgets on tracks that are dinky. I say to them, you're wrong, and must not have ever been to the Hut Hundred back when they started 33 cars. A lot talk about engine strain, but back in the day I made the 4 crown ran the whole race, and blew it up at Angell Park.

"Sun Prairie is PowrI sanctioned"; or "promoted"? There is only one POWRi ("national") midget race there (this year & at least 2016...idk if any websites go back much further than that nowdays...lol)
