How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I ask this question because I often wonder how many people work at a place where no one gives 2 cents about sprint car & midget racing... I use to work at a place like that... of course now that I run my own sign & graphics business... I can talk to myself all day long...:kookoo

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I am always trying to get some of the guys I work with to go and give it a shot, however usually their weekends are booked since we dont ge many off in a year. Hard to sell to them, but I know if they would give it a shot they would be hooked.

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
Work?? What is this "work" thing you speak of?
|
Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
What would stands look like and how much would the purses be if the current fans would try and bring one co-worker to the track??? Hmmm, just a thought.
Sorry, I'm talking too myself again... :O::kookoo |
Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
The people my wife and i work with or know think were friggen insane to drive 4 to 5 hrs down to southern Indiana just for a nights worth of the best entertainment our money can buy..We've done it 23 times so far this year and we ain't done yet!!! The next 4 weekends we'll be on the road:Steer:thumb

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
Just a couple. One has worked on late models and/or modifieds in the past. The other one because his favorite NASCAR driver, Ryan Newman, followed the short track route. He also keeps an eye on Bryan Clauson in the Nationwise series because of me.

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
One guy I work with thinks he saw a sprint car race about 25 years ago. The rest think Nascar is the only racing around.:censor::thumbsdown:
|
Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I have a mechanic that helps out here a little, he is a BIG nascar fan. I took him to the Flora IL MSCS show a couple of weeks ago...Now he is ready for the Hut 100! He had never even seen WoO before. A true fan is born! :D
|
Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
There are a few, but mostly it is 24, 8, 20 and 3 fans. There is nascar crap everywhere. We work a short drive from THAT, but most of them don't even seem to realize they race up there. I told a guy one time that I was going to the races that weekend. His response: "you're going to Bristol?" I had to let him down easy and explain about Haubstadt. I've invited a few people, but if there is no nascar ties, they aren't interested. They're drinking the Kool aid something fierce.

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I have taken coworkers and many of them Like sprint car racing very much. I can say that they dont get to go as much as they would like. but they do go when they can and thats something!!
|
Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
Not a lot of sprint car racing to show off to folks around here. I have a couple of co workers who have come out to watch us race the late model and now the modified, but nothing consistent. I make it a point to try and get more folks to come out, but without much luck. Unfortunately, with the way the shows are run in this area, some that to come out, don't come back (too many similar classes-hobby stock, pure stock, outlaw stock, limited modifieds, modifieds, etc.). Some tracks even try and run 5 or more classes in a night. Some features don't even get the green flag until well after midnight.

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I have to explain to 90% of the people I talk to about racing, what a sprint car is. When the subject that we own a race car comes up, they'll ask what kind? and I'll tell them a sprint car. Inevitably, they'll ask me what a sprint car is. I haven't learned yet, though, because I still haven't put a pic of one in my wallet.

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I gave up years ago. Most of my co-workers in a huge office at "Big Yellow" (before I retired from full-time employment) thought racing meant NASCAR. A few thought I referred to the local stock car events. One or two actually knew about sprint cars, so I had learned to mention racing to only those who would know what I spoke about. Sure cut down on time spent conversing about racing at work!

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I'm retired, but still manage to run a Tq Midget on Social Security, so keep them Tin Top lovers on the payroll. Most of the posts I've read, are pretty much like what I hear, if it ain't got fenders, it must be a Go-Kart. Kinda like the Prestone Commercial, guy can't decide what lure to use, and fish jumpin everywhere, that's the kinda look I get when I mention Sprint cars or Midgets, "yeh, my neighbor has one of them, keeps it in his back yard". Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
Since I am between jobs, I have no fellow worker to relate to.
But my favorite watering hole is a different story. When I say I am going to a Sprintcar race, they think I am going to a NASCRAP show.(Thanks to Sprint for confusing people). They can not understan how I can go to 25 or 30 Sprintcar shows and still be around for the Sunday races on TV. The best I have done is to get a guy and his son to go to The Little 500. They thought it was great, but they will not go anywhere else. They said the Little 500 was better than any NASCAR race they have seen, but they still spend their money at Daytona, Bristol and 'Dega. What do I have to know how you can teach people that a 850 HP 1300lb race car is the most exciting racing there is. I did get some girls to go to Gas City for a regular program, but they left because, even thought the Sprinters were exciting, they grew tired of all the support series. I guess I hype the Sprinters too much. I guess if ignorance is bliss, there are a lot of happy people out there when it comes to racing. Sprintcar racing is the best racing, bar none. Well maybe you could throw in SC or Midgets. Let the NASCAR crowd live in their poor diluted world. There is no help for them. |

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I work at a place that employs 2100 people. There are a few who go but not regularly. One of my best friends owns and drives a midget, another has owned cars in the past but now his son now drives a midget full time. He's an excellent driver but needs some HP. There are a few who have raced micros over the years one of which has moved to ARCA recently. I wished we had a track here in So. IL that ran sprinters more often but Haubstadt is only an hour away not too bad.

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
My last attempt to introduce new fans to the sport was the 4-crowns at Eldora last year. BIG mistake. Everytime I see them now, they say they are still wiping dust out of their eyes. They joke that the cars "sounded" cool, since they didn't "see" much of them. Needless to say, they don't think highly of "dust track" racing and will never return. That's a bummer.

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
when I try to describe a sprint car verbally to an "unenlightened" one they almost always ask, "you mean a dune buggy?".....DRIVES ME NUTS!!!!!!!!! :O:

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
As a Field Service Engineer, I only see most of my coworkers a few times a year. Currently, the company I'm contracted to is completely staffed with New Yorkers and New Jersey-ites. I've been working on them, though. Another FSE is a guy who immigrated here from Guyana, in South America. He's a big time NASCAR fan. The weight-horsepower ratio comparison between my favorite kind of racing and his definitely has him interested in seeing a sprint car race. Most of the rest of the people there just look at me like I'm from another planet when I talk about this. I think most of them have trouble with the concept of earth that isn't covered in concrete.

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
:help::headbangThe reply I get is sprint cars at Lawrenceburg. That's where the gambling boat is is it not. I did not know Lawrenceburg had a dirt track. What is a sprint car anyway . Drives me nuts . Most of my co-workers live in Ohio and are older. When i try to explain to them what a sprint car is .There reply is o no , way to loud or to much dirt .

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
The folks in my department don't understand my addicition to sprint car racing (don't you get dirty? doesn't it smell? isn't it loud?). Yes, yes and YES! What's there not to love? I tell them they should check it out and they give me a polite "We'll see if we can make it..." but they don't.
I am lucky to work with the guy who won the last sprint feature at Paragon so when I have the need to speak to someone who knows what the heck I'm talking about, I call him!!! :checkered: |
Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
Not only is it hard to explain what a sprint car is or why I like it so much, it is really hard to explain where some of the tracks are. Where is Gas City, Vernon, Brownstown, Flora, Haubstadt, Jacksonville, Boswell, etc... and why you drive that far to see a race? These are questions only true sprint car fans can answer. Sprint car tracks can be an educational geography lesson.

I've only made 2 races this year, but I managed to get a newbie to attend each one with me :thumb... my g/f had her first racing experience @ the Burg and now I'm taking her down to Charlotte for the NAPCAR race....
I can justify this by saying we are being put up for free by a close friend, not to mention we will be hanging out with a few NNS drivers all weekend and them boys now how to have a good time :kookoo:O: |
Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I live in North Carolina. Need I say more?
Worse thing to ever happen was when Nextel/Sprint became the title sponsor of NASCAR. Now, whenever I say I'm going to a sprint car race, they automatically think NASCAR and start telling me that Little E is their favorite. I then tell them I don't give a damn about NASCAR and then they just look confused. I'm reminded of a bumper sticker I used to see that went something like: Eldora, if you have to ask, you'll never understand. I quit trying to explain and usually just tell people I'm headed north to visit family. |

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
Various people ask me about racing that know me. When someone overhears me talking they usually ask this Q:Do you race? A:Yes, I own a car. Q: You don't drive it? A: No. Q: Why spend all that money and not drive? A: Because I love it. It makes me happy and gives me somthing to do. Q: What do you race? A: Sprint cars. Q: What's that? A: Open wheel cars, 1300#'s, 800HP. Q: Where do you race? A: Everywhere that there's a race I want to go to, like Gas City, Kokomo, Lawrenceburg, Putnamville, Eldora, Terre Haute. Q: You drive all the way to Terre Haute and come back in the same day? A: Yes, and sometimes go to work the next day. Then the conversation usually takes this type of direction::: My uncle used to have a '71 Chevelle that he would drag race on the street and it had like 1000HP. It had a 3/4 full race cam in it and a Holly Carb. Is that kind of like what you do? A: Have a nice day!
So, no I don't take people to the racetrack anymore. I learned my lesson long ago. I am definately not an ambassador to the sport I dearly love. No reason to spoil a perfectly good sub-culture with people who don't have respect for something that takes so much commitment. However, when I do take someone new to a racetrack, I can usually tell after hotlaps if they will ever return. The ratio so far is about 5:1. Also, people automatically assume that you are a dirty street stock racer and are suprised you have all of your teeth. HAHA! |
Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I am fortunate to work in an office with two other SPRINT and midget car fans,.
However, I was watching a newscast recently doing a feature on Shannon McIntosh of Miamisburg, Ohio. I bet Shannon was shocked to learn she was driving a Sprint Cup car instead of the winged sprint car she was to wheel at Waynesfield. At least, that's the way the local reporter told the story on Dayton television. Also, was at my cousin's house a few year's ago and her son was talking about going to Paragon to watch buggies race. Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
Most of the people I ask say its too EXPENSIVE! Expecially the World of Outlaws, but they will go to that because its the WoO's.
All we have at Haubstadt now (our local scene) is high dollar shows once or twice a month that cost $20 to get in the stands and $30 for pits (where the action is at) and most people don't want to spend that kind of money (for husband & wife). Once people get set in a routine that they like to do every week thats what they look forward to, but when there is no local racing, every week, people find other things to do and before you know it racing isn't the 1st thing they want to do. They find other sporting events and athletes to support. Taking qualifications out of the program is also taking valuable time away from the fans and drivers not to mention excitement from the line ups. Thats what I found out. |

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I live in Ellettsville and work with someone on their car sometimes. However, no one here likes to talk racing with me. I don't know why with Bloomington being so close. What's the deal with that?

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I'm a die hard sprint car (non-wing) fan from Indiana that for some unkown reason decided to move to East Tennessee about five years ago. Yes I now walk among the lovers of the tin cans and believe me a night at an east TN race track is like going to fun fest on a weekly basis. Can you imagine Fun Fest every Saturday Night. Super Late Models, Limited Late models, Super Streets, Street Stocks, Ponies, Modified Ponies, Front wheel drive, Modified Front wheel drive, and (MY FAVORITE) Super Modified Front Wheel Drive. Everything Hot Laps. Then everything qualifies. Then we have a 30 to 45 minute intermission. Then we run features in reverse of how we hot lapped and qualified meaning that the Super Late Models are last and usually run their feature sometime after 11:30 p.m. and before 1:30 a.m. Oh how I miss three classes of cars, heat races, consi's, features and home by midnight. Oh and by the way if you mention non wing sprint cars in this area they look at you like you've got three heads. And you wonder why they sleep with family around here.

Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
I live and work about 15 mi from Eldora. There are 140 employees
There is just 3 other person that goes to Eldora maybe 2 time a year. I would say that 75% of the people that live within 20 mile radius of Eldora has never been there. It seems everyone in our plant are football fans. Just to give you a idea Coldwater played a local school last Friday and the 50 / 50 winner got $ 4560.00 They just don't know what there missing Mark Fritz |
Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
How many follow sprints and or midgets....about 2 co-workers. They never heard of the legendary Dave Darland, or the infamous whoooaaa rrracin :dologob: or have no recollecton of seeing a young KT, Tony Elliott and DD duking it out week after week at Putucky or Kokomo. :loser:
Now ask the question how many follow nascar? About 150!:headbang |
Re: How many of your co-workers follow sprint car racing??
When I retired my wife and I decided to buy a bar in Lakewood, CA. to keep busy. I have always been a fan of sprint car racing so last year we started sponsoring Tony Jones and the Alexander Sprint car team. We have had Tony and the car out to the bar on three occassions, so our customers are beginning to understand what a sprint car looks like. Starting last year myself and my son started going to the PAS on a regular basis. I invited some of our customers and now we have a regular group of 5-6 at every race. It makes going to the races fun. The trip from the Long Beach area to Perris is about one hour, though that is when traffic is good and it rarely is in L.A. So our journey ususally takes a good couple of hours. The weekend after next we have two new fans wanting to go with us so it should be fun introducing two newbies to this great sport. PAS is a wonderful race facility and they make it very enjoyable for race fans. Tony has won the last two races there. :nonwingfan: :checkered:
