RT@USAC Racing @USACNation Hmm...what could Doug Boles and Levi Jones be discussing in this picture, taken at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway? |
Re: Speedway will build a dirt track for Tony Stewart
The Dirt Track at IMS.... interesting.
|
Potentially great news for usac and Indiana sprint/midgets.

Re: Speedway will build a dirt track for Tony Stewart
So what would be the stands. The turn three stands? They'd be 200 yards from the track.
IDK, My Glass half empty meter is twitching and I'd like to see it switch to half full, But it would have to be in a manner that helps Indiana Sprints and Midgets and not takes away or further over saturates the number of tracks. Maybe a replica of 16th street speedway. Yeah the ballpark won't be the setting but its a tie to recent history. At least the shape of the track would be a challenge for a year or two, The top teams have our local tracks dialed in. LBurg's tried once or twice to put a higher to win on sprint week, But its a hit anyway so why spend extra? Id love to see a couple tracks put a bit more for the racers to end the week. Just like Eldora does for Ohio Sprint Speedweek. Oh well, Time will tell. The way the story reads is its temporary or flat so they can still use it for IMS events. |
I would imagine they would bring in temp stands.
Can we now bring the Hut 100 back to Indiana where it belongs? |
The "hut hundred" belongs at one place really, thus the "hut", and that's Terre Haute. Just a matter of getting the cars which seems unlikely due to the unstable climate of midget racing and the fact some folks on here think midgets shouldn't be run on anything bigger than a hockey rink.

Think I'll try to sneak over with the Zonker and run a few laps; I can practically push it there from my house...:31:

Depending on where they build it, the spectator mounds could provide quite a bit of lawn seating. They could easily put up temporary stands on the opposite side. I don't know how interested IMS would be in hosting many dirt track events. It's an already saturated market and profit would probably be difficult to make. This sounds like a one time thing.

All the would be needed is jersey barrier wall and they probably got old fence or extra fence stuff at the track. Keeping it confined in a local area controls the cost of staff etc. And doing it to honor a former USAC triple crown winner, IRL Champ and Nascar and Brickyard Champ is just plain :6::6: Rushville Rocket Raceway! It could have four or five events, Hey, Bring back Thursday Night Thunder with some TV, One or two events per class, WoO, USAC Sprint and Midget. :) There goes my Glass half full meter. |
Re: Speedway will build a dirt track for Tony Stewart
I'd be seriously willing to bet that the night before the 500 will make a return to dirt...
I don't see how this is bad at all. They've already said it won't be weekly, only a special show racetrack. |

I don't see how this is built, and a race is NEVER run on it. I get it being a gift. But to me, that's a lot of effort for ONE appearance. I'm sure Tony would like to see a race run on it.
I don't think running 2 or 3 specials a year would oversaturate the market any more than it already is. Doug Boles/IMS hosted many dirt track promoters in the winter/spring so he obviously gets it. Grass roots racing is important to all racing. I'm sure something could be worked out to run and not step on other track's dates. A qualifying day, dirt track night race, would be cool. It wouldn't take much temporary lighting to light the dirt track. They generally don't have anything going after a qualifying day. I think some pretty cool things could be done a couple times a year. If they are serious about putting a real track down, right dirt, and right length (after they build the initial 3/16th), I think it could be a really cool deal. I think it could really enhance dirt racing, not take away from it if put together and used in the right way. |

A new track is being built and some of you are pissed? Can someone please explain to me how a new place to race is a bad thing? We have it great here racing wise. Some of you crybabies need to be thankful the racing gods smile on us Hoosiers, instead of complaining about future races.

Re: Speedway will build a dirt track for Tony Stewart
Per IMS this will NOT be a "permanent fixture"!!! https://twitter.com/IMS/status/748542352914944004
|
I would predict something possibly being put on during the Brickyard weekend...maybe that Friday or Saturday night? Although I haven't checked schedules to see what's running elsewhere during those days.
They're already putting dirt down and putting up barriers per the pics on the IMS Twitter. |

Re: Speedway will build a dirt track for Tony Stewart
They layed out the track in one day with barriers and dirt and plan a test, NOT OPEN TO THE PUBIC on Tuesday.

Doug Boles gets it. If a final product is put together correctly (track layout/surface and events), I don't see how it's not a positive. And, it won't take away any space needed in May. |

Do people even read articles anymore? It's a 3/16 (much bigger than Bankers Life, though). It's a test. It's for a publicity event. If they ever do it for real (here's hoping), it will be bigger, with more banking and proper catch fencing. Think of it as a scale model, a feasibility study. Jeez.

My quick 2 cents worth. If any of you out there think that THE Indianapolis Motor Speedway won't do this right...then you're mistaken. Whether a gimmick to Thank Smoke or a test for future plans, you need to give IMS HUGE cudos for building a dirt track inside our oval. Maybe take a deep breath and relax, try not to speculate the FUTURE OF AUTO RACING from one little dirt track attempt. Congratulations to IMS for listening to & being involved in dirt track racing in Indiana.
