Gas City and Kokomo
2 buddies (1 has been there) and I are going to the first leg (Gas City and Kokomo) of Sprint Weeks this year. Coming in from Sun Prairie WI, Milwaukee, WI and Mchenry, IL. What is a good time to get to the tracks in order to take in the sights, smells etc? Should we go in the pits or stay n the grandstands and try to get a good seat? Any suggestions for good viewing angles from the stands? The guy who has been there before told me that after seeing just 2 of the races, I will be hooked and will drop every race planned for 2017 and take the trek and do the whole Sprint Weeks tour next year. I'm down with that. I am a winged sprint guy, who follows the IRA around Wisconsin, and see's the Outlaws a minimum of once per year. What should we look for? I first came onto this site last year asking similar questions, so it only took one season to make the plans. I appreciated all of the input to my questions last year, and maybe I can get some great suggestions this year. Thanks

Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Most will tell you to hit some places in town, mostly eateries to savor local tastes. Which would be a good suggestion to take in the sights, the food, and just the atmosphere of each town. You can easily spend most of the day doing all this. So get in town around lunch time and spend the early afternoon taking things in.
As for Gas City, get there early as you can. Seats go fast, and ideally you will want to be in the top half of the stands. Pits are also not too bad an option either. As far as I remember you can still get in early to mark your seats. Kokomo has a lot of recommended places to visit. You can't get in early to mark seats, but the line to get in starts kinda early around 2ish where most will line up their blankets or whatever by the gate and then come stand there around 15 min before the gates open. At the same time though there aren't really any bad seats here. Pits and the backstretch are also good options too. Indeed, do yourself a favor and make plans to do the entire stretch one year. You WILL be hooked and it'll be an annual trip for you. |
Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Gas City USED to let you into the pits a few hours before the races free of charge. You had to vacate at a certain time prior to hot laps. But that was under the old owner regime.
Do they still do this? Anyone? |
Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Do these tracks allow you to go into the grandstands if you have a pit pass?

Also, yes you can move between the stands and pits freely at both tracks if you buy a pit pass. That's actually an easy way to avoid the line at either when they first open the grandstands. |

You must be Brian's friend? Can't wait to see you guys!!:8::8:

Re: Gas City and Kokomo
That I am, and Thanks. Looking very much forward to it....

Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Sitting at the turn 4 end of the grandstands at both tracks will almost guarantee at one point in the night you are going to get sprayed with mud. However, watching the cars ride the cushion at Kokomo from this vantage point is awesome. Do yourself a favor and get a porkchop sandwich at Kokomo.

Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Hey everyone. So I have only been to THAT and LPS for Sprint week. Have made a solo trip to Kokomo and Gas City for a weekly show. But this will be the first time to both for Sprint week. Do you think getting to Gas City by 3pm would give us a pretty good selection of seats? Can we just go in and lay a blanket down and then go get food, or go wander the pits? I cannot wait for sprint week at both these places! Pumped!

Re: Gas City and Kokomo
The pits would be the best seat in my opinion but if you don't want to spend that kind of money for a pit pass do the 50/50 as they let you in the pits until the first motor fires, very good deal I think then go to the stands and get as high in the stands as possible. The very pretty lady at the pit gate is Jill her and her family run the show at Gas City and own Kokomo she is the nicest person you will meet and can answer all of you're question's.
As for eating The Halfmoon is the racers hangout and is the best Resturant in town they also sponsor Josh Spencer 66j motorsports, with the Moon on the side of our car we do everything in our power to get people to try the great food and atmosphere ( not sure if anyone does as much as I do to get people in the door. Pat on my back:) anyway you will leave full and at a very reasonable price, our fans have said they are glad Chris helps Josh as they are very loyal to Josh and enjoy eating there. The Moon is also very family friendly. Ask anyone that has been there you will make it a regular stop everytime you come close. Now make sure you stop at the 66j trailer and introduce yourself. Be safe and have fun, hope to see you soon Jerry #66j stida.com, Halfmoon Resturant and Brewery, Colescotts Mobil 1 |
Re: Gas City and Kokomo
I suggest not taking food or drink into Kokomo.
Was in Indiana a couple of weeks ago during the Indy 500 week. Doing the Bryan Clauson Double package deal. We get to Kokomo, eat supper they provided and I go walking in with a cup of ICE. Just ice, that is all. The nazi at the main gate totally disrespects me. I understand that I may have not been following rules, but when he TOUCHED me, then proceeded to ask "Can you read?" ..... Let me explain, every other track we went to that week allowed me to bring my drinks in.. Terre Haute, The Mile, Putnamville, Bloomington, they all allowed it. So no, I was not thinking to look for a sign that says I can't. Excuse me for assuming. ... He is lucky I was not driving my own vehicle and kind of at the mercy of not having my own way out of there, next time he touches me I will make damn sure he doesn't have the physical ability to ever touch anyone again. ... Moral of the story, keep youR ICE in the truck. Or Hitler will try to give you some (as Jack Hewitt would say) "His shirt says staff, so now he has some authority." |
Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Ummm did you notice the policeman right next to him? I think if you try to harm him the policeman will take care of it before you can do the damage you apparently would like to do.

Re: Gas City and Kokomo
racefan20, was no cop next to him. but was a trash can. Where I not so politely threw my cup of ICE.
chrismattlin, I don't hold it against Kokomo by any means. I am aware I was in the wrong. The issue is putting your hands on me. You can talk and we can trash talk back and forth all day. But I draw the line somewhere. I wont try to sneak anything in. I dont mind buying drinks at the track, if they dont allow you to bring your own in. Not being from there, I didnt know to look for a sign saying not to. Where I am from its understood that you dont bring anything in. I think its a great idea tracks allow you to bring a cooler in, hate the greatest racetrack in Indiana hires an idiot to work the gate though. Thats a real bummer. |
Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Thanks to all who posted with suggestions. I am getting excited for the trip. I have a few World of Outlaw shows to get through before that though. If anyone else wants to chime in, feel free. Too much info cannot hurt in this situation. Thanks again

Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Have a great time at both tracks. Like most have said on here you will be hooked forever! Kokomo is one of the best tracks in the entire country hands down! The local eateries are some of the best around. Halfmoon Restaurant and brewery is just awesome. That's a must stop in Kokomo! Get to both tracks early and buy a pit pass and enjoy the sites. Like Jerry said make sure you stop by the 66j pit some of the most down to earth guys you will ever meet! Be safe and have a great trip!:):6::32:

Definetly a good choice of the races that you are gonna hit... Gas City u should get there as early as possible and walk throught the pits and just kinda hang out... There is not a bad seat in the house. Kokomo will be the best show of Sprint Week... The pits would be a good idea and there isnt really a bad seat in the house there either

Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Can't you get reserved seats at Kokomo? I did for Smackdown, but they all seem to be pretty good

Also, not saying it's right or wrong, but 10 years ago Kokomo had the same rule it does now if I'm not mistaken. |

Why not? I just ate at Applebee's, young couple came in, with a baby, he had a hog on his hip, I don't normally open carry, because that's the person who gets the first round, I was in the military, and cc everywhere, even in the Pentagon, had to, required, and I wore a suit and tie, you get used to it! Bob

It's not illegal to do so as long as you have your permit to carry.
You could carry at any of these tracks, with the exception of the state fairgrounds, and I'm sure plenty of people do, if you conceal like you're suppose to nobody else would ever know, which is the point of a concealed carry. However if you have a firearm and someone from any track tasks you to leave or to go put your firearm away, it's your job to follow their rules or you could be charged with trespassing as its private property and you have to live by their rules. |

Personally have I ever felt threatened at a race track? Not really but I have seen some crazy things happen at race tracks. Hell, just last weekend I was at the Dream over at Eldora and there was a brawl over the fact Bloomquist didn't make the feature. |
Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Just a couple days away. Rain is looking to impart some say in the matter at Gas City. How hard do the tracks down there work to get the show in and is there a curfew that work against? Thanks for all the previous info. The 3 of us are looking forward to it.

Re: Gas City and Kokomo
Would someone give me an idea what time the feature usually gets over @Kokomo? Trying to figure out some logistics.
Thanks! |
The age old question...when does the show end?
It could be 9pm or 11pm...depends on how many red flags ect happen...hopefully the fence stays in tact and their Is no delay.. In my experience...they push the show along along as best they can. GYATK |
