Favorite Race of the Year

I was just wanting to know what race gets everyone most excited and pumped up to attend each year.

But I would like to also know, coming from the fendered world originally,

What is your favorite Open Wheel race of the year.

AND

What is your favorite non-Open Wheel race of the year.

Would love to hear them.

interpreter66 5/18/16 4:44 PM

Pavement=little 500

Dirt=all of them

little 500

JarrettFarms73 5/18/16 5:04 PM

I certainly subscribe to the "whatever race I'm at" mantra as my favorite but for me the $10k night of Smackdown is my WONT MISS night for sprint cars.

Fender cars: something about those hornets I like. I had a a couple buddies that ran at Anderson in the Mad Cow dodge neons. Just as fun to watch on dirt.

Re: Favorite Race of the Year

Little 500, then Chili Bowl, then Kings Royal

non-open wheel race is the Winchester 400

wing410fan 5/18/16 5:19 PM

Hulman/Hoosier hundred. Going to the little 500 for the first time in 37 years. Looking forward to both.

Re: Favorite Race of the Year

Sprint Week THAT, PVille combo
Three Crown I went because there wasn't a wing in sight. But I guess I'll deal.
Sprintacular was better when Waynesfield also ran friday but yeah.

Non Sprint. Merrill Downey Memorial.

Pavement- Little 500 @ anderson

Dirt- Any sprint car race

of the wall race- 3 hour at the speedrome

Jrp4554 5/18/16 7:18 PM

Pavement little 500

Dirt-gotta be the 4 crown. Love seeing midgets, sprints and silver crowns the same night.

Andrew S. Quinn 5/18/16 7:42 PM

Re: Favorite Race of the Year

Smackdown for sprints on dirt

Little 500 for sprints on pavement.

World Figure 8 championship for other.

Little Belleville for midgets. (What Kokomo is for non wing sprints,Little Belleville is the midget equivilent)

Blueracer123 5/18/16 7:51 PM

Open wheel - this is a hard one for me. I want to say it is a tie between the 4 crown and Indy 500.
Non open wheel - world 100

Rich Mersereau 5/18/16 8:02 PM

World 100, Dream, Kings Royal, 4-Crown

Definitely a pattern here

Open Wheel: The first race I can get to to kick off Ohio Sprint Speedweek in June for me - no matter where it is at.

Non-Open Wheel: The annual Kalamazoo Klash at Kalamazoo Speedway. Outlaw Late Models at their best.

Thanks for asking. Great thread to follow!

Re: Favorite Race of the Year

Any Silver Crown race on a Dirt Mile.

My last non-open wheel race was the 1972 Can-Am Series event at Brainerd, MN

flagboy55 5/19/16 7:16 AM

Always for me it's the 4 crown. Only missed one or 2 throughout the history of the event. Great value and great racing. As far as fenders, I don't think you can beat the world's 100. I almost never go to stock car races anymore, don't know why anyone would if they could go to a sprint car race, but the world 100 is awesome. Just the heats get your money's worth, some of the most intense racing there is regardless of the genre.

Dirt- Gotta b the Next one..Without Wingz of course;)
U can't go wrong with any Memorial race...fenders ,open wheel. Someone that poured their heart into racing during their life...

Re: Favorite Race of the Year

If I'm at a dirt track in Indiana and they're running Sprints, Midgets or Dirt Champs it about as good as it get for me.

Non Open Wheel: Once a year I'll get back to my home town track of Hagerstown Speedway for a Super Dirt Late Model race, but I can't say there is a special event I aim for.

Keith Ford 5/19/16 8:20 AM

I've never been able to understand why more people don't go to the Dream. I know as far as racers go the purse is different with the winners share being much larger and not as equal throughout the rest of the field but the best LM drivers in the country all still show up and you still get the same format. Not to mention the weather is typically much nicer in June vs September. But you compare the crowds to each event and they don't even come close. I just go to both

Re: Favorite Race of the Year

Strictly speaking for 2016 I would have to go with The Turkey Night Grand Prix out West at Ventura Speedway. We went to the 2012 Turkey Night at Perris and that was a great time. Unfortunately that seemed to have fizzled a bit over the past couple of years.

Now they've moved Turkey Night to Ventura and we're gonna' make the trip West for that deal. We went to Ventura for opening night in March of 2012 and we left with the impression that as good as the sprints are (and they are VERY good) at that place the midgets will be equally as good or better and it's located at one of the most beautiful and unique settings of any dirt track in the world. I believe the Turkey Night will be revitalized at Ventura.

Year in and year out we look forward to the week of vacationing and racing in Southern Illinois at Rend Lake and Du Quoin.

Re: Favorite Race of the Year

Ironman 55 WoO and PowrI for 2 nights at Pevely

The Leffler Memorial, IL Midget Week, and Gold Crown, and Haubstadt for Sprint Week are all can't miss for me too. I'll be going to the Kokomo Smackdown and part of Indiana Midget Week for the first time this year so those could make the can't miss list too.

Non Open Wheel: AMA Flat Track at the Springfield Mile.

OMG I forgot I"d like to say I'm sorry I have lied to everybody and I am truly sorry. A friend (Ron Miller) talked me into going to the ARCA race at Salem. I found it so exciteing I was able to get a good half hour nap in lol. Funny thing about that was when I woke up everything was the same as when I nodded out HA HA. :D

Leffler Memorial is hands down the best tailgate scene. #partyinthebeanfield I think the racing was pretty good too. 😜
