Re: Kokomo 5/15/16
Thank You Kokomo Speedway for once again hosting a great night of racing. It was cool and windy early but the wind died down about race time. The track was really nice, given there were heavy rains earlier in the week. But that made for a fast racy track with 3 or 4 grooves all evening.
Kevin Thomas Jr. and Andretti took off on a torrid pace early on with Leary and Courtney in tow. With 4 laps in as Darland and Grant were gaining momentum on the top going into turn 1, someone in front of Darland seemed to have caught the cushion or checked up, and Darland tried to slow to avoid crashing while Grant having no where to go, creamed the back of Darland's car causing both Darland and Grant to flip. Grant landed on the downside of the track while Darland's flip was a wild looking spiral in the air landing hooked to the turn one fence. With the help of the Lawrenceburg safety crew and the Kokomo crew, track workers were able to get the Walker 11 out of the catch fence and on the ground where Darland crawled out uninjured. Grant was also able to walk away. As the front group started to catch the back-markers Leary was making a move to the front, but a brush with the front stretch wall slowed his momentum. At about the 10 or 11 to go mark, Clauson who was running about 6th or 7th at the time began his move to the front on the bottom side as Thomas and Windom in the Baldwin car maintained a wicked pace on top. With 3 to go, Windom had reeled in Thomas to within a few car lengths making a move to the low side in 3 and 4 to take the lead but wasn't able to make it stick. He gave it one more shot in the last two turns but had to settle for second while Clauson with the late move pushed his car into a podium finish at the flags. Thomas Jr. took the win. Great racing throughout the field of cars all evening. And in typical Kokomo fashion, was in the car and on the road before 9:30. :22: |
