Terre Haute

I am looking forward to heading to the Action Track tomorrow. Does anyone know if the rain has cleared there ?

Re: Terre Haute

Not sure when you have to leave to get there. Also depends on how much more rain we get or if they are expecting some sun tomorrow. I seen pics from about noon and the grounds are very wet.

Best to stay up to date through Facebook, Terre Haute Action Track page. Track Enterprises page etc

Also some people here live close, so might be early updates on conditions tomorrow mid morning.

cody leohr 46L 4/30/16 6:17 PM

Rain has stopped at the moment in Brazil

chastaj 4/30/16 7:42 PM

I hate to say it, but I don't know how they will get it in, and the track be even half way decent. Cool cloudy conditions, and a lot of rain over last few days. With 70% chance tomorrow afternoon.

midnightrider 4/30/16 10:49 PM

If anyone can get it in, I think Bob Sargent can. I'm ready to see some sprint cars at Terre Haute. The Sumar was a good race.

Re: Terre Haute

It will be Sargeant and Helfrich together on this one. Helfrich runs MSCS. If there is half a chance, those two can pull it off.

treecitytornado 5/1/16 1:46 AM

Just hope they don't try it like 2009. That is if they have to grade that much.

Postponed to August 14.

From the track's FB page:

Terre Haute Action Track Postpones Spring Fling Event
MSCS Sprint Cars & UMP Modifieds Rescheduled For August 14

Officials from the MSCS Sprint Cars and Track Enterprises, the promotion company of the Terre Haute Action Track, have announced that the 2016 Spring Fling scheduled for Sunday, May 1 has been postponed due to extremely wet grounds and an unfavorable forecast for raceday. The event has been rescheduled for Sunday, August 14.

The event was scheduled to be the second of the 2016 season, after the season opening USAC Silver Crown race in early April. Ironically, the same event last year was nearly postponed as well, due to heavy rainfall across the midwest the day before. The race was run but drivers struggled during the heats before track conditions came in.

The August 14 raindate will feature the same two classes. For the MSCS Sprint Cars, it will make for a great weekend of racing. On Saturday, August 13, they will be racing at their home track, Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, IN for the Hoosier Sprint Nationals, paying $5,000 to win. The Scott's Custom Colors UMP Modifieds will also be on the Sunday, August 14 card at The Action Track.

Up next on the Terre Haute Action Track schedule is the Tony Hulman Classic for the USAC National Sprint cars on Wednesday, May 25. The event is the first of three for the Track Enterprises promotion, "USAC's The Week Of Indy". The Hulman Classic will also feature the Scott's Custom Colors UMP Modifieds. Fans and drivers then head to the Indiana State Fairgrounds for the Hoosier Hundred on Thursday, May 26 and then to Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis on Friday, May 27 for the Carb Night Classic.

While those attending the Tony Hulman Classic will be able to purchase tickets at the gate on raceday, a presale "Week Of Indy" Superticket is available for a discount if going to all three events. The three day ticket is available for $60, a savings of $15. The three day superticket will be available starting early this week on usacracing.com and trackenterprises.com.

JT May I ask what the problem was ? I remember the day before a Saturday the races were rained out and rescheduled for the next day which was a Sunday. I got there pretty early and watched in shock as at that time a guy the promoter was calling a dirt track preparation expert on the grader going around with the grader wide open and the blade straight across. when operateing a grader on a suface like that you should only use the lower gears such 2nd maybe 3rd I don't think a lot of people know this but a grader flexes (bounces) when at speed and the blade will gouge the surface . So theres this so called prep expert gouging the track , in other words rutting up the surface, when Tommy said something to the promoter and next thing you knew Tommy was grading the slop off the track , it was a hour or so delay but we went racing that day on a dam good track that was smooth with no ruts. So again I ask what was wrong with the track that day, and also I don't recall you being there to race as usual. The reason I know about the grader is cuz in my younger days I was a heavy equipment operator ( grader track hoe backhoe dozier etc etc) :8:

Chris Nunn 5/1/16 10:56 AM

That race in 2009 was one that in essence should have been canceled. Alex Coonan got hurt really bad that day, and there was only half of a track to be used. Later on in the feature there was another massive accident on the backstretch where another drivers car was torn completely in half. It was postponed one day, but the track was still way way too wet for anything to have happened.

treecitytornado 5/1/16 11:15 AM

Chris it wasn't Pettas. It was Alex Coonan that broke his neck.

treecitytornado 5/1/16 11:22 AM

Jim, like Mr. Nunn said that track was in no shape to race on. It was rough and had a huge burm piled up on the inside that narrowed the racing groove causing many crashes in the 2 Hour Long MSCS Main and in the SCORA Main where Alex Coonan broke his neck. Thankfully everyone learned from that and they cancelled today. Driver safety should be #1.

"Ironically, the same event last year was nearly postponed as well, due to heavy rainfall across the midwest [sic] the day before."

Actually, that's coincidence, not irony. Irony would be if the event was sponsored by the Totes umbrella company, London Fog raincoats or the Intergalactic Galoshes Consortium.

Thank you for this opportunity; my work here is completed.

Glad they made an early call and rescheduled the event! Thanks Bob Sargent and Track Enterprises for your efforts in promoting the sport so many of us love!

Re: Terre Haute

JT I thought the track was more than half wide sure I remember the berm on the very inside but I was thinking there was plenty of room cuz MSCS did their 4 abreast salute to the fans . I also remember after Tom graded the track they had fans help run the track in and even after all the slop was graded off they still had to have the track watered lol. I forgot about SORA racing too. Guess old age is catching up, maybe I got CRS (can't remember sh#t) lol. ;) :8:

kcarm92 5/1/16 5:47 PM

Also had crate lt models that day too

Rpracing1 5/1/16 6:30 PM

From what I understand, driver safety and track conditions were the main determining factors of the cancellation , among others.

Leohr46 5/1/16 6:46 PM

I ran that day. The track was rough and narrow. We should never have ran that day. In the end there was a lot of equipment destroyed and a driver left with a broken neck.

I'm grateful, but unworthy. I'd like to thank the Academy for this honor and my mother for teaching me how to read.

Guess right today we have rain in terre haute right now with thunder

ronmil 5/1/16 8:42 PM

When was the 2009 race everyone is referring to run? I apparently wasn't there as my records don't show me attending anything but USAC races at Terre Haute that year. I suspect it was run the next day after the USAC race at Lawrenceburg on April 18th and I probably was not up to making the trip to Terre Haute .

SCORA

Robbie "The Rocket" Shuttleworth wins the Union Hospital Classic at the Terre Haute Action Track on June 14th. The Terre Haute Action Track lived up to it's name Sunday afternoon and evening as fifteen year old Robbie "The Rocket" Shuttleworth of New York battled his way to victory lane. Robbie has been racing winged cars and visiting victory lane frequently at Gennesse Speedway in Batavia, New York until just a few weeks ago. You' ll be seeing more of "The Rocket" as they are moving their race team to Brownsburg, Indiana to go non wing sprint car racing.

The cars of Suttleworth, Dusty Wright, and Alex Coonan were battling for the lead coming off turn four heading for the checkered flag when Coonan's car launched into a series of violent flips. Alex was transported to nearby Regional Hospital for examination.

The top five were: Shuttleworth, Dusty Wright, Chase Stockon, Jamie Frederickson, and Alex Coonan crossing the start finish line tumbling. Alex Coonan took the SCORA points lead from J. T. Stapp who damaged his car in a five car flip on lap one of the MSCS feature. He was unable to repair his sprinter in time to start the SCORA feature.

The rain delayed Union Hospital Classic almost didn't happen as the track received over 4" of rain in several downpours Saturday afternoon and evening. Track crews reworked the track to the point where it could be driven on and asked for volunteer race fans in the stands to bring their four wheel drive vehicles out to help wheel pack. Over twenty race fans answered the call and helped wheel pack the soft clay to the point cars could be put on the track. The "Doctor of Dirt" Tommy Helfrich from Tri-State Speedway jumped into the mix and drove just about every piece of equipment the Action Track had available helping save the show. Due to the soft conditions the track developed rough ruts in turns two and four and there were several crashes as a result. The 30 lap MSCS race took almost two hours to run with multiple red flags and cautions including a fuel stop. The ILMS late model race was also plagued with multiple cautions and a red flag with their 15 lap feature taking almost an hour to complete.

The SCORA sprint cars put on an excellent race with several challenges at the front and throughout the pack. The was only one caution for Chase Stockon who came to a stop in turn 3 after challenging for the lead. He was able to race his way back to a third place finish. They only other problem came as the cars were coming to the checkered flag with the Coonan flip. Fans who weathered the delays from the rain and the resulting additional track prep time wee witness to some great racing action.

It ws great to see the SCORA teams all pitching in and helping each other out in the pits. Parts were loaned and barrowed and teams helped each other make repairs on those cars that were repairable from damage they received running the MSCS race. Nice job guys, that is what this deal is all about.

Must be. I guess I missed this one because I attended a USAC midget race at Lawrenceburg the night before and the weather may have been doubtful, so I skipped it. Thanks for posting the results!

Apparently it was the MSCS race originally scheduled on 2 May. I have a note indicating there was too much water on the track so it was rescheduled for Sunday 3 May. I show a rainout for that day and rescheduled for 13 Jun. That was rained out and they ran it on Sunday 14 Jun..............I think.:10:

treecitytornado 5/1/16 10:13 PM

This was the show. It rained out on Saturday and we came back Sunday.

Re: Terre Haute

Sandy that's the one. I don'r know the date outside of it was suppose to be run on Saturday afternoon and a hard thunderstorm hit so they ran the race the next day Sunday. :8:
