MSCS sprints @ THAT

Does anyone know for sure if they will be running individual time trials? Hopefully so!

chastaj 4/17/16 5:47 PM

MSCS went to a group qualifying process this year.

ThrowbackRacingTeam 4/17/16 6:42 PM

That's too bad.

Re: MSCS sprints @ THAT

MSCS never ran time trials, it was always by the draw. I believe this year they are doing group qualifying. You may be thinking about USAC:6:

I prefer the passing points for the heat race action.JMO

I for one could care less about qualifying. I prefer to just watch them race. I stay in the pits while time trials are going on always have always will.

Re: MSCS sprints @ THAT

I think qualifying and inverts produce better heat races. Good job MSCS

I like time trials. One car at a time.
Its cool concentrating your focus on one car. You can really see how the car works. I love hearing them work the throttle.

Re: MSCS sprints @ THAT

I always have preferred qualifying, over any other method, when I was driving, I felt like how ever it turned out, it was my last chance at the track surface, just me, by myself, to see what if anything needed changed, and sometimes, after hot laps, you may be very close to something failing, and it might be the difference between starting the feature, and loading up early. Give me qualifying any day, or night. Bob

Re: MSCS sprints @ THAT

To me, hotlaps and qualifying are half the show at THAT Go in the infield turn one and watch hotlaps. You can read the Hoosier on the LF. Watch em single car qualify and the number that bike it.

It's cool as heck and too me, separates the men from the boys. No, Im not callin anyone a boy. Just more experienced and the vets still have trouble some time at that track.

I said something about a year or two ago about car counts slipping, Well most tracks don't qualify anymore and its sad, its a part of racin and always has been and in USAC its oh so important for drivers to learn that dicipline.

Re: MSCS sprints @ THAT

Any other form of racing, qualifying is nothing special. Being in Big Block / Northeast Modified country, one Modified at a time is a waste of time. Being a photographer now I don't mind it as much as I did when I was a fan in the stands. Even at a winged sprint car show as a fan I didn't care for single car time trials, but the traditional non wing sprint car, qualifying / time trials is my favorite part of the night. Seeing the driver "elbows up" coming at you at full lock going into 1 or 3, is incredible. I love being able to see the entire right side of the car, but the car & the driver still being in control.

JoshCunningham 4/20/16 9:42 PM

I know for a fact that every track we raced at with the MSCS in 2003, we qualified. It was pretty awesome to get to a new track, hot lap, then see what everyone had below the belt. Even had the good ole trophy dash for the 4 fastest qualifiers. Good times, amazing tracks, and even better people.

treecitytornado 4/21/16 2:28 AM

That's right, Josh. I remember qualifying at North Vernon and Bardstown.

ThrowbackRacingTeam 4/21/16 3:58 PM

With lower car counts, I don't expect much more than 20, it would be really good to see single car qualifying at this one race. I think most are in agreement that it is one of most exciting parts of the night at the Action Track. I sure hope they reconsider and make almost all the fans happier!

Does anyone remember what year it was that MSCS had 65 sprints at the opener at Terre Haute? It was early to mid 2000's i know forsure thinking 2004 maybe 2005. I just remember that was my first trip to the track. Would love to see those numbers again.

BrentTFunk 4/21/16 5:07 PM

Re: MSCS sprints @ THAT

The only time I remember that many cars at Terre Haute was the rained out Sprintweek race that was going to be on ESPN. Not saying it wasn't, just what I remember.

Josh you are right back when Sam Stockon had the MSCS you did qualified. But after the Helfricks bought the series they have not qualified, cuz they went with the pill draw, :6:

Re: MSCS sprints @ THAT

Ok after some searching I found this. It was 56 sprints and the 2005 MSCS Spring Fling. hey that was 11 years ago I had the 5 and the 6 right just in the wrong positions. Would love to see those number again.

Darland and Brun MSCS "Spring Fling" Winners

From Sam Stockon: Two beatiful Spring nights were on tap for the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series openers. An almost perfect night at Terre Haute saw the MSCS car count record tied with 56 Sprint Cars in the pits.

A large opening crowd and a nicely prepard race track made the six heats go smooth. Winners made the redraw and they were Paul May, Alex Shanks, Bryan Clauson, Bud Kaeding, Dave Darland, and Terry Babb. The two B Mains were won by A. J. Anderson and Justin Marvel. Darland started on the pole and led flag to flag, but the racing was hot for the rest of the field. Jon Stanbrough received the MSCS "Hard Charge" Award by passing the most positions in the feature. Dickie Gaines was right behind Stanbrough for that honor. The finish of the Bell Helmets Feature was Darland, Stanbrough, Kaeding, May, Gaines, Kent Christian, Marvel, Kenny Carmichael Jr., Anderson, and Babb. Travis Thompson won the Steel Block award.

Sunday at Spoon River Speedway, Canton, Illinois hosted Sprints and Midgets. A large car count with a lot of midgets and 33 MSCS Sprint Cars and also Modifieds and Wild Things. The early start had the track slick and the surroundings dry. This turned into a wild night for the promoter, racers, and fans for many crashes a couple of hospital trips and the track lights kept going out and really confusing and delaying an already crazy evening. Shane Hollingsworth won the First Heat after flipping his MIdget in Hotlaps, Josh Slone, Morgantown, Indiana won the Second Heat, and late arrival Joey Montgomery of Fredricktown, Missouri won the Third Heat over Rookie Brent Bauchamp. The B Main was won by Ryan Jamison of Iowa. The Feature race turned out to be a wild and unpredictable race. Hollingsworth stayed out front most of the feature. On lap four the first big spill say Chris Urish going end for end in three and Slone also was involved. On a lap 17 restart Montgomery ran up on Hollingsworth left rear causing Hollingsworth to be disqualified for a flat tire. On the final restart on lap 18 an aggressive move by Chase Stockon, who had started last and was trying for third made contact with Korey Weyant in turn three, with Weyant taking a very nasty spill and a trip to the hospital. Some of the drivers at this time reported they were running out of fuel and the race was ended at that point for with all the problems and cautions and light problems, it was getting really late. A. J. Brun was declared the winner over last years Champion, Alex Shanks. Shanks after two nights is leading the points over Hollingworth and Brun. Dave Darland is leading the Mike's Motors "Route 41 Shootout". The next MSCS race is Saturday April 16th at the famous Florenc Speedway, Union, Kentucky.

MSCS OPENER AT THE ACTION TRACK TO BUD KAEDING

Terre Haute, IN. (April 8, 2006). The Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series visited the Terre Haute Action Track Saturday night to present the 5th Annual Spring Fling sponsored by Wabash Valley Goodwill. Bud Kaeding of Indianapolis, IN, drove to victory after a surprising late race opportunity presented itself. Kaeding was in the seat of the Scott Benic 2B Racing/Maxim and running fourth when unexpected racing things began happening ahead of him. He would soon have the lead.
Indiana sprint car veteran Jon Stanbrough had grabbed the lead on the first lap. It took challenger Dickie Gaines two laps to move up to second spot by passing California driver Ryan Pace. Gaines stayed in pursuit on the lengthy half mile finally managing a clean pass for the lead in turn two of the sixteenth lap. Stanbrough held on, mounting his own charge to regain the lead. The sixteenth lap quickly met with a yellow flag as the two drivers made contact in turn one and spun. Gaines’ car was unable to compete further but Stanbrough was pushed off rejoining the tail of the field.
Ryan Pace brought the field back to the green flag. The 22 year old Arroyo Grande, California, driver had already dusted the competition in the third of five heat races. He led the charge down the backstretch but he couldn’t hold it in a wide sweep of turn three and spun making contact with the wall. The yellow was out again without the field completing an additional lap.
With the field reformed and the car removed to the pit area it was announced that the race would be shortened to twenty laps. Temperatures were dropping steadily, the city curfew loomed minutes ahead, and two divisions still had a feature to complete. Kaeding was the benefactor. He had started seventh and was already moving forward. This time the green stayed out and Kaeding prevailed. The remaining 4 laps were quick ones.
Jon Sciscoe of Bloominton, IN, turned in a stellar performance during the race. He started 17 th on the original field and was already running fifth by lap sixteen. The final dash to the finish brought him up to a hard earned second place finish. Kent Christian of Clayton, In, took third. Dave Darland, victor at last year’s Fling, was fourth. Jay Drake of Brownsburg, In, was fifth. Drake also won his heat. Kent Christian, Stanbrough, and Gaines also won heat races for the super 51 car field.
Jon Stanbrough finished the feature and reclaimed a top ten spot with a ninth place finish. Mat Neely. Brady Short, and Alex Shanks finished just ahead of him. Critter Malone was tenth. Jerry Ruble used a MSCS Provisional to start 21st on the field and from there he moved on to finish eleventh.
The C-main won by Jonathan Vennard moved 5 drivers forward to the B-main which was then won by Alex Shanks with the battling Sciscoe second. Brent Beauchamp was third with Bryan Clauson, up from the C, working the B-field now to finish fourth. Kenny Carmichael took the final transfer spot.
During the heat races, accidents sent competitive cars driven by Daron Clayton, Justin Marvel, and Rob Botts to their respective trailers early. Clayton’s flip was in the third heat. Botts was running second in his heat before enduring a series of hard barrel rolls
The Midwest Sprint Car Series will be back in action on April 29th with a visit to the Lincoln Speedway in Lincoln, IL. This event is the first of 4 important races scheduled for the Illinois track and pays $2,500 to win.

You apparently never saw Cary Faas qualify at Terre Haute. Everyone dropped what they were doing to watch that.

Guys I think we are getting mixed up between MSCS and USAC. MSCS pill draws for the heats, USAC qualifies for heats, ,I like the draw and points cuz the gys have to race for positions every race. Sometimes with qualifying guys get in a qualifying position and stay there cuz they know they are in the feature :8:

MSCS is doing group qualifying this year

Indy1808 4/23/16 10:11 AM

I'm already torn between it and Kokomo's opener. I just can't hardly pass up the sprints flying down the great 1/2 mile at THAT.
With this being a Sunday race, I sure hope that they opt to push the times up and "get er dun!" early like the Sumar 100.
Some of us have a 2 hour drive and work on Monday.
Anyone seen the itinerary for it?

open_wheel_outlaw 4/23/16 12:32 PM

Hot laps at 5 & racing at 6:30 per facebook

Or, if you're really old watching Don Branson qualify in a dirt car on a mile!
