Anybody have any thoughts on the running of the modified feature before the sprints? Haven't seen any comments on here, but I did hear several negative comments as I was leaving, especially in regards the dusty track during the sprint feature.

rclaridge 4/18/16 3:28 PM

I actually like it,but maybe run the modified feature before the track rework. Running the sprints last gives fans the opportunity to get in the pits before the guys are loaded up and gone!

Re: Haubstadt

Normally I leave after the sprint feature, but all I can say is WOW that modified feature was a hell of a race after the half lap leader took his self out, You had to feel for the guy, he still came all the back up to I think 4th. That fight for first was hell of a race. I may stick around to watch the mods again. I didn't mind them running first, as long as they don't become a spin fest its ok with me :8:

Re: Haubstadt

The comments on here are quite different from the ones I have received on Facebook. I didn't have a lot of comments, but the dusty track condition was the biggest complaint. Most of the people I know who were commenting at the track don't post comments on IOW or Facebook.

I wondered that myself Ron. With a 3 hour drive home and being behind an hour on the clock, I would prefer that the sprints ran first, but as Jim pointed out below, that was a pretty darn good Mod race without too many cautions. Even Ken Schrader had nothing for those guys. Was still home at 2:40 am. No Complaints though!!

Ron, I was under the impression that was a one time deal only. I know a modified driver who ran the 4th heat, then the 'B" and would have been rushed to have his car ready for the feature event if he would have made it. I did not think the sprint track was that dusty. Drivers loved it from what I heard.

Re: Haubstadt

I thought it was good to be able to go straight to the pits and not have to wait. The mod feature was good and i would not have normally stayed to watch it. I have not seen the pits that full in a LONG time. I sure hope they sold a lot of shirts and made some new younger fans!

I would be totally fine with Sprint Hot Laps, Sprint Heats, sprint B, Sprint Feature...then bring out the tractors and work on the track....then Modified Hot Laps, Heats, Features.

If you are a sprint fan from out of town, no matter how many cars show up, this would be workable.

And if you were a sprint car driver owner and got the car torn up in a tangle when would you have the time to fix it , guess just say#### it and load up. Also whats the hurry spend the 15 20 minutes and watch the mods or whatever race, hell you're going to spend that much time trying to get out the parking lot :8:

No problem with it, both features were very good! Dusty track...gee we just started racing season, winter is gone, complaining already, Tom Helfrich probably does more laps on his track in Jan-March than some promoters do all year.:22:

I posted this just to get some idea as to what people think; I always stay for the modifieds anyway to avoid the early rush getting out of the parking lot. Anyway, the major thing I was hearing was "dusty track".

A little dusty, but at least they weren't blowing tires!

You folks out here are just too nice! (and I say that in a good way -I love living out here!!) Before making my comments I will preface them with the fact that I love Haubstadt and agree that Tom Helfrich puts more work into his track surface than 95% of the others. Saying all that my opinion is that management should give their top division the best surface possible to run their feature on and Saturday night they did not. At Williams Grove the 410 sprints always run their feature first and if another division had come out on the track before them like Saturday it would have been loud and ugly. It was the dustiest I have ever seen Haubstadt but the racing itself did not suffer from the dust. It was still a good race with lots of action. I enjoy the UMP modifieds a lot at different tracks and the feature that night was really great. The racing was close & tight and very entertaining. My feelings about Levi Kissinger's comments in victory lane was that he should have just apologized to Mark Lamonte and just said he didn't mean to do it (which I agree he probably didn't) and left it at that but then saying Lamonte was already spinning before he hit him was trying to place the blame on the wrong person. The booing back East would have been deafening. Being that 75% of the fans, drivers, owners and crew members live in the Eastern Time Zone that should be taken into serious consideration when determining the order of events. We drove three hours to be there as others did and enjoyed the racing very much but arriving home after 2 AM can be very tiring and make you drag the next day.

Roger,

I know one of the track regulars who said it was the dustiest he had ever seen it, and compared it to the conditions when winged cars run. He also said he would stop coming if they run the modifieds first on a regular basis. As I said, I stay around for their feature anyway to let traffic clear, but running them first no doubt affected the track for the sprints.

Re: Haubstadt

Something we all are forgetting is that new clay was put in during the off season. Tom and crew didn't know how the new clay would react to the racing , but I bet there will be a lot of working that clay before the next race. Also I have heard it was USAC;s request that the mods run first :8:

rclaridge 4/21/16 12:45 PM

I talked to Tom and it was USAC call to run the sprints last.

It does get some of us home a little late but i will have to say this.. there are more fans that come to the pits, after the races, than any other track around. we continue to meet new people and letting the kids sit in the cars and get autographs is quite rewarding.. we do appreciate all of the families that take time to do this..
