Re: Top 10 Must Visit Sprint Car Tracks in America
Eldora not in the top 10 ? ? ? ? come on :10:

9 out of 10. Never been to Tulare. I'll need to fix that someday.
I've even been to Double X once. I went there right after an Indy car race at Gateway. I arrived late and sat behind some locals, including a group of Mennonites. I had just sat down when the announcer came over the PA saying that "anyone who traveled the farthest to the track tonight would receive a free Pepsi. Just show your driver's license at the concession stand". I must've stood out for some reason. I swear 20 people turned around and looked at me. I will agree their hamburgers were amazing...and cheap. Everything was cheap. Even the cost to get in was like 8 bucks. It was like I had stepped into a time warp. And yes, I got that free Pepsi! |
Re: Top 10 Must Visit Sprint Car Tracks in America
I've only been to 5, planning on Lawrenceburg & Bloomington this spring... Midget Week

Re: Top 10 Must Visit Sprint Car Tracks in America
I have been to 6 of the 10. While I realize these list are highly opinionated, there is no way XX Speedway is in the top 10. It is not even in my top three for the state of Missouri.

Jesse Hockett told me about XX Speedway, when I told him about upcoming plans, and I was looking for somewhere different to go on a Sunday night on the way to Knoxville. I think it was $7.00 to get in when I went, and "Aussie Wayne" was there that night and won the long distance award. |

No Eldora?
Somebody needs slapped for that. |
No Pevely or Eldora? not even close
|
For some reason I always drive by double X on the way to Indiana, you know Bloomington, Lawrenceburg, that ,the hills and Anderson and Kokomo ,,lb,, yep ruined by the monster that's called Kokomo!
|
Eldora must be in the top 10 of any dirt track list for sprints or late models. Don't know if it's the best but it is a great track and atmosphere
|
Re: Top 10 Must Visit Sprint Car Tracks in America
Eldora might be top 10 based upon its sprint car heritage, but it is now a fabulous facility for late models. Kokomo not only deserves this honor, it has EARNED this honor. Thanks O'Connor Family!
|
Ive been to 7 of 10 plus many of the oldies. I can understand the diversity of opinion on Eldora... it's been the scene of some of the best and, yes, worst sprint races ever. Why they have the dust problem that other less well financed facilities dont is a mystery. Nevertheless, the stands are usually full.

Where's Tri State? Three , four wide, wheelies, and close racing.

Re: Top 10 Must Visit Sprint Car Tracks in America
I'm not sure why there is so much outcry over Eldora on this list. Don't get me wrong the facility is top notch. Concessions are great, they don't cost you an arm and a leg. Go up with your cooler and get yourself a 6'r of beer for a decent price. There's really not many bad seats in the place and although it has a lot of modern updates its still got that old school feel to it.
But as far as the racing has gone, I don't think it's as great as it once was. That USAC/WoO show last year wasn't too great on night one, it got better on night two but I could have gone to Bloomington and LPS those two nights and saw closer racing. The dry slick type track they often prepare there just doesn't make for the racing I think there use to be on the surface. When the Outlaws are there they tend to get strung out pretty quickly. Even with late models, last year I was at the Dream when Bloomquist was 25 lbs light at the scales. I can remember back in the day at the end of the race when cars of all types would roll the bottom before pulling in trying to pick up any mud they could to get an extra few pounds. Now the cars use up the entire track and any moisture that may be left before the race is even halfway over. The surface is just worn out, I know they put some new clay down last year but they need more of it IMO. Just to be clear though, I'm not raggin on the track. I was over there 6-7 times last year and I'll be back this year for sure. I'm just not sure it should be guaranteed a spot on the list of best tracks anymore, at least not as high as people say it should be. |
Insurance has been hurting tracks like Eldora. They want to see a dry slick track as they think it is safer for racing. It just makes the racing not as exciting. But if you read the descriptions for the top 10 list the person said at least one of the tracks was on their list because of the atmosphere. Eldora should be there for atmosphere alone.
But I'm in the minority that thinks Kokomo is over rated also (yes I said it, blasphamy for most of you, I know) |
Re: Top 10 Must Visit Sprint Car Tracks in America
Williams Grove shouldn't be on the list, I doubt it's even in the top 25. They have unreal top speed, but that's about it.
Is the list about tradition or good racing ? I hate freight train racing, theres more passing in one good lap at say Kokomo then the entire race at a fast winged track. Maybe one of the best sights in all of racing is watching the guys bang their right rear off the wall at Kokomo. |
Re: Top 10 Must Visit Sprint Car Tracks in America
Eldora scrapes the cushion off, the features are probably 2 seconds a lap slower than before they took the banking out and more often than not has a catfish winner you couldn't see half the track due to the haulers.
Everything but the tracks improved. It used to be take your breath away on the wall and monster sliders. I also always remember waves of dust but never the way its been where you can't see the whole turn four. Don't know if its the new lighting from the inside or what. |

Re: Top 10 Must Visit Sprint Car Tracks in America
Williams Grove......there is something to be said about standing outside turn 3 and watching them come out of under the bridge and straight at you down that loooooooooong back stretch. The cars seem to dance and jig alittle sideways. cars leaning back on that left rear.....PHEW!!!! man i gotta tell you its a sight you won't soon forget. that being said, you know i can't wait until 6/10 for the big cars.....

I went to Trophy Cup at Tulare a few years ago, excited about the total inversion, but it was constant wrecks (even on hot laps!), one yellow flag after another... got old But I'd still give it another try.... |

If you don't like TeeJay's list then make your own site and put a top 10 list on it! Been to Eldora many, many times. It is nothing like it used to be.

I was at the great USAC DUST OUT , couple years back. Could hear the sprints come down the front straight , but couldn't see them, and that was first set of hot laps. That's last bit of money Tony has gotten from me. :7: |
