I try not to be negative...but the Chili Bowl is my favorite race to go to all year long. I have went the last 6 years. I believe this is a slippery slope. I don't think an event like the Chili Bowl should be giving any kind of hand outs to racers for accomplishments during the season. Plymouth Speedway has done a fantastic job with promotion and new ideas but I just simply do NOT like this. What about the guys that would have been in the B Main but will now be in a C Main because of the provisionals? To me that is just not right...

Blueracer123 1/24/16 1:56 AM

I think its a great idea. It gives gives 4 guys get out of jail free card. If they have a terrible qualifying night they are still in the B Main, if they have a great qual night and lock into the A main then they did not need that extra insurance. If they are in a B Main no matter what after their qual night. No foul either.

Blitzman 1/24/16 2:00 AM

Don't like this one bit.. What happens if driver & car owner splits between the b-main qualifying races at Plymouth & Chili Bowl. Then what? This is about dumb. These racers better tag the back of the B-mains, even behind the guys that Transfered out of the C-mains.. This is just as dumb as the "promoter provisional" giving to Old fart Swindell at this years Chili Bowl..
SMH , very disappointed..

Re: PLYMOUTH Banquet - Midget News - Involves the Chili Bowl

I was gonna say what blitz just said, people were going nuts about Sammy getting a provisional this year for the main, What kind of stink fans may put up over this, not sure.

Personally I understand that Plymouth is trying to become one of the premier tracks and good on them. But why the Chili Bowl would choose to affiliate themselves with this track or these races, I'm not sure. If you're gonna give out free passes to one of the B's at one of the biggest dirt races in the world then why wouldn't they give them out to the winner of a race like the Turkey Night GP, Kokomo GP, or any other crown jewel type events where the best midget drivers are all racing in the best equipment.

Not trying to be negative or anything, just don't get this.

Blueracer123 1/24/16 2:26 AM

Nate because if you research those dates a little bit you realize that pretty much everyone is off those dates so you will end up with big name drivers and cars there. I bet Kieth Kunz would love to have his cars come race and win those races as a backup to mechanical failure on qual night. It is just a win for Plymouth promotionally. Now the track gets a ton more exposure, even if fans are not happy about the B Main part, the track name is more out there.

I don't disagree that Plymouth stands to gain promotionally from this. However, I don't like it from the side of how it affects the Chili Bowl. No ONE should get a get out of jail card at the Chili Bowl. I'm sorry. It's the biggest dirt race in the world and some years it just isn't gonna be your year. I understand the past champions provisional a little bit...it's a benefit to the most recent champion that won arguably the hardest race in the world the year before.

What happens if a Joe Shmo gets one of the spots and is way off pace and takes out someone who actually EARNED their way? This isn't kid karts where everyone gets a trophy...this is the Chili Bowl.:15:

The guys that would have been in the b-main will still be in it. just a few extra cars in each b-main.

The way I understood the announcement is if there would be a split the driver is still in. he's the winner.

Also the MavTV race Tuesday, June 21st race with the 410 Non-Wing Sprints, UMP Modifieds, & NEW Pro 602 Crate Sprint class.
This will be the "Tony Elliott Tribute".
The track contacted Cindy Elliott to get the ok to do this.

D Byrd 1/24/16 12:51 PM

I love things that are designed to specifically promote midget racing, not unlike the Jonathan Byrd's Indy Challenge.

There will be stacked fields at all of these Plymouth Midget races, and undoubtedly they will be featured on MAV TV as well.

Per the tracks Facebook page.
READ THE ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE TRACKS FACEBOOK PAGE.
Due to the large out cry against the idea these 3 races have been cancelled.
http://www.facebook.com/PlymouthSpeedway

USAC Midgets still on with WOO sprints for Friday, May 13th.

PIT CART 1/24/16 5:30 PM

Wow they add a stupid rule to the largest dirt race and the powers can't believe they get negative feedback!! So let's just cancel 3 races from are scheduled program.

Tim Clauson 1/24/16 5:35 PM

I am not sure how cancelling events is in the best interests of any series. I think the concept is an outstanding idea however locking in cars into already one of the hardest to make shows in the racing world, to me dilutes the effort of the 300+ competitors vying for those positions. A thought I had was to lock in the series champion into the Race Of Champions on Tuesday night. I think the mini series could be run in several different areas of the country and would be a great addition to the "ALL Star" concept of the ROC. Just a thought and thank you for your efforts to promote midget racing

monkeyboy 1/24/16 6:25 PM

Great to see what you can accomplish if you work together. Three midweek races cancelled. Bravo! Cmon guys let's get some more shows cancelled.

I honestly don't know why you punish yourselves the fans and racers after the announcement by totally cancelling.

I think thought out and worked on a bit more, It could be done without cheapening the CB. Something like tag the tail of a A of a Qualifying night with one position point less than those that got in that night. With is results that night determining Saturdays placement, Even if he/she finishes last in the prelim night A. It puts him able to skip E-N features. possibly. Without being given a reasonably doable shot at Saturdays A for something totally unrelated to the CB.

I think we all need to thank the nattering nabobs of negativism for helping kill this idea. We all know that midget racing has some serious problems. The pits are so full of cars that some of the late arriving teams have to park outside. The stands are so full that if you don't get to the track very early it is SRO. Thank goodness the promoters have given up on an idea that would make those problems even worse. Midget racing is in such great shape that it doesn't need any innovative ideas which have the potential of making a crowded situation even worse.

People aren't upset that midgets were scheduled. That's not the issue. It was only the Chili Bowl tie in. If you wanna make the show in Tulsa then get a car and team together and go race your way in against the best midget drivers in the world like everyone else. How is a special event like that fair to other competitors that aren't able to make the show? In Tulsa everyone has an equal chance.

As for Plymouth, if they wan't to bring notoriety to themselves as a facility and to midget racing, it is possible to do so without associating a race or races to the Chili Bowl to achieve their goals.

Look no further than 60 miles down the road to Kokomo Speedway where they have the Kokomo Grand Prix. That event brings in 40+ midgets no problem and they double the show by bringing in sprints which results in a ton of guys pulling double duty and in turn putting more fans in the stands. The track has worked closely with various sanctioning bodies to make it into a marquee event in a region that midget racing comes at a premium.

If they time it correctly and make it worth while for the drivers I'm sure Plymouth could come up with an event that could be just as big of a hit without having to involve the CB.
