Shane Cockrum

Can anyone explain the Alex Shanks/Shane Cockrum "incedent" at tonites Chili Bowl race?

chathamracefan 1/16/16 1:04 AM

Just saw a tweet from the chili bowl account that cockrum has been dq'd for posing as another driver.

What a shame

20A-Alex Shanks...The 20a was found out to be Shane Cockrum, not Alex Shanks. Because of this, Shane has been DQ'd for the 2016 Chili Bowl Nationals.

Shane raced his race the other night.

Oh come on, Back when some sanctions had terms racing with other groups. Surnames were all the rage. Luck Warmwater, Smoke Johnson, Hoolio Jones etc were quite popular drivers :)

They got caught. That is all. I find it kinda funny, But I guess if your the guy getting bumped, It isn't so much. Shane simply tweeted "WHERES THE ACTUAL RULE BOOK?"

Bill Holland got a long suspension from AAA for driving a pace car at a non AAA race. This was after he won the 500. :24:

It wouldn't be such a big deal but it screwed someone else out of tonight's A main

DirtHawk92 1/16/16 10:01 AM

Was he wearing a "Wig and Sunglasses?" Ala Johnny Manziel... Wow!! Y would u even put yourself in this type of situation? Immoral... Re: Shane Cockrum

Can anyone find the actual rule book? Not defending but as far as I've ever seen theres only a handful of actual rules. No ski's instead of tires. No more sloping tail tanks. No more V8 Hyabusa's.
Only rules I can find are car appearance rules. Ten percent ethanol rule and driver minimum age of 16.

"Special Note:

Qualifying sixth on the A Feature lineup, the No. 20a of Alex Shanks was found to be a lie. It was revealed by officials that the driver was actually Shane Cockrum, who qualified on Wednesday. For this action, Shane has been disqualified from all remaining competition during the 2016 Chili Bowl. In a statement from Chili Bowl Director of Competition, Matt Ward, it was explained, “In our Driver’s Meeting, as soon as I get done welcoming all the drivers, the first thing read is; once you draw in, you cannot race again. That is your night…We don’t like disqualifying anyone, but what Shane did was wrong, and is unfair to the drivers and fans who attend the Chili Bowl.”

I sincerely apologize for my actions, it was done merely in fun and to draw chili bowl excitement. The intentions were not to harm anyone or gain any advantage. I had always heard that the Usac guys used to run under aliases as they traveled the country. Ill timed joke maybe, but I would appreciate attacks on my character being left out. Anyone who knows me knows this wasnt in seriousness and I am the first to help anyone. Sorry things went down as they did, times have obviously changed.

Can Porkey drive the 66 car tonight?

Re: Shane Cockrum

im still not sure I follow this, Did Shane have two cars and enter them both and call himself Alex Shank, or is there another driver named Alex Shank and Shane was trying to get that guys car in the A for him? If there was no Alex Shank what would Shane have done if both cars made the A?

JDK222 1/16/16 1:23 PM

Yeah still some unanswered questions. I take it the 66 is thrown out?

I was informed of a example at the World 100 where one of the big names qualified four identical cars with different names including his own with the intention of using the best QT.

He got caught too.

Really do we need a rule book to prove something as wrong as this????????

Re: Shane Cockrum

Speaking of rules, why did Fred/Goggles get disqualified for foot powering a foot powered car across the finish line? That doesn't seem right to me.

Charles Nungester 1/16/16 2:41 PM

Re: Shane Cockrum

Jerry Spencer, I wasn't defending it. I simply asked, where's the rulebook stating it.

I'd be a little surprised if this is the first time for this. I know for a fact it has happened before at a track in Indiana at a bigger show.

Flintstone drove the wheels off that car.

He might be talking about todd Gibsons FLINTSTONE-FLYER

mscs20 1/16/16 7:56 PM

Alex Shanks is a 3 time MSCS champion from Marion IL. And he is there helping #7 Wade Siler. Alex also has spent some seat time in the Amati 66 (winged version).

I believe, this occurred at a All Star Race in Ohio. I seemed to remember reading it in one of Dave Argabright books.

I personally seen it happen, at a USAC Show at Eldora, back in the Wide World Of Sports days.

LocalYokel 1/17/16 12:32 AM

Yeesh... Sorry I started this thread, I just wanted some clarification after I heard about it on the PA last night.
I don't persoanlly know Shane, but everything I've ever seen or heard about him is the defination of class and integrity.
And its not like the big teams dont do this anyway, just in a slightly different fashion. If a big team with backup cars doesn't like how theyve qualified, they just scratch the car and enter the backup car in a later night... I see no real difference.

DirtHawk92 1/17/16 2:28 AM

Had some time to really think about this... Here's my problem with it... Nowadays social media is on your front door step.. Back when guys did this in Usac from what I understand they didn't try to run 2 diff rides knew who they were and there was something u would read about in paper a day later... Joke about... Now so here's the deal u got some young kid tryin to make it in the sprint world whether it b midgets or 410s workin his butt off to get a ride or exposure in the racing industry... And along comes a "known" driver tryin to slip one in on the field...remember the "known" driver would've been in the same situation back in the day...Don't forget how u got where u r... Give u the benefit of the doubt Shane... Slice of Humble Pie never hurt anyone...sure I'm a fan of drivers gettin 2 rides midget week=midgets&410s enjoy as much as anyone... Just my 2cents...

Why would a race driver who has capability, risk not competing in the event?

What does a driver want to be known for?

It has happened in the past at the Chili Bowl. A car owner from the South had 2 cars entered, one for his son and another for Carl Olsen (from Down Under). They put Carl in the car intended for the son after Carl had already raced the other car. DQ :7: ruled as soon as he was discovered. Tony Elliott drove at least a full season for that car owner, so someone may remember that team. Seems like Danny Drinan had a nasty crash at Eldora in one of that team's cars in the late '90s. Help me -- my memory is leaking.

I believe the team was CED

JDK222 1/18/16 1:14 AM

I still have not heard if Alex Shanks was even at the Chili Bowl. My understanding he is a real driver from Southern Illinois with ties to Amati Racing. Shane has not explained his intent? He says it was all in fun? This doesn't pass the smell test for me. Shane was already in a good car why get in another? The only thing that makes since for me is an attempt to cheat, run 2 cars and stick with the one that advanced the furthest. But even after all of that if he had one the whole thing how was he going to explain it in Victory Lane. Things just don't add up to me, has to be more to the story. Ones actions define your character, and as Forrest Gump would say, "That's all I got to say about that"
