IUPUI and USAC Team Up to Study Tire Cheating

Apparently developing forensic tests to detect chemicals used to soften tires.

"The products that people use on these tires are chemically very similar to fuel, like gas or lighter fluid; they are in a very similar family," said John Goodpaster, director of the Forensic Sciences Program and associate professor of chemistry at IUPUI, and the lead researcher on the study.

i thought they already had labs that were used to test tires. and the biggest used chemical seems to be a product called...... "inconclusive"

It's not rocket science.

What about the tire conditioners that have NO VOC's mmmmm. Even heard of putting Deer urine in with the air after conditioning. Grab u a sniff of that. Notice I did'nt say softners.

Damn Dave,i would hate to be the guy that was in charge of dismounting those deer urine tires.

Why is usac using money for this? There is no pavement Racing any more. Ok except quarter midgets. There are treatment that are not petroleum based. That will pass. And there is always animal urin. lol

pretty sure they have spec rr tires on dirt

You're naive if you don't think dirt tires are being treated and softened.

Have been for years, everything you can think of, internally and externally. Bob

Analytical chemistry is capable of developing any test IF they know what they are testing for.

Re: IUPUI and USAC Team Up to Study Tire Cheating

and if they know what they are testing for, so do the ones supplying it to the ones applying it on the tires. they can develop a "blocker" and hides the substance being tested for. the "pro" fuel mixers do it all the time. they can mix a batch of highly illegal fuel and it will test negative for any additives.....ps....its not just about softening. there are potions out there that can do anything you want....harder, softer, more grip, less grip, stiff sidewalls, floppy sidewalls and the whole time, the durometer reads what it is suppose to. kart racing tried for years to stop it and basically gave up. any time they came up with an "unbeatable" test, one person beat it then everyone followed.

Kind of like testing for steroids

It's a shame they can't team up with scientists to make cars safer.

Wow, great news, this will solve all the wrongs of racing. This should not only lead to huge car counts on dirt but bring back pavement racing to its prime. So good to see concentration within the key area that created the demise of racing.

treecitytornado 1/13/16 2:31 AM

How about eliminate spec tires rules and go back to OPEN Tire like BOSS is.

As someone with a degree in chemistry, I'm intrigued as to how this is accomplished

I did some tests for newton for a couple of years. there`s no such thing as a spec tire. Bob said he could make any tire and just put a spec number on it!

Will this be like pavement Racing ? the beginning to the end ?
