Pavement midget racing.
I have had a few people call or message me wanting to run some midget pavement races. What I am wanting to know is how many people would be interested in running on pavement. This would be the same kind of deal with the dirt series I am running. Would allow lightning sprints, TQs, Kenyon Midgets and all mudgets up to 4 cylinders.
I'm getting some tracks interested in sunning midgets on pavement so I need some feedback to see if their is enough cars to try this or not. This will be a separate deal from the dirt series. https://www.facebook.com/Midwest-Mid...0122822502966/ |
Re: Pavement midget racing.
I have already had some people ask if I was going with rules like the Rumble series and going with dirt tires. Needing some input on tires. I do want to keep the cost down.
|
Would like to bring my tq and I know of at least one other pavement tq that would most likely be interested. You'd have to make the rules so it would fair running a tq that only makes 100 hp or so though

There is quite a big difference between a dirt and pavement tire, both in size and hardness of the rubber compound. Unfortunately they are pretty close when it comes to cost. Tony used a dirt tire rule on the sidewinders and 1000cc cars when we raced up at the Rumble. We were pretty much tied down even with worn out tires. Guys were actually using 10 year old TQ dirt tires to free the cars up a little. Tire wear wasn't a problem up there>> but replacing Coke syrup with asphalt might cause premature wear of the soft dirt tire in very short order. The guys up in Illinois are using a DOT tire with what I understand to be pretty good results, you might also contact the guys on the east coast that run pavement midgets for a deal on their take offs? One thing for sure it would sure be fun watching a bunch of guys that have only raced on dirt take on the challenge of taking the dirt out of their driving style.:D Honest Dad himself:6::6: |
I have had several people tell me that American Tire has a good tire to use. I was told it works for both midgets and TQs.

Re: Pavement midget racing.
IRS - Grundy, Rockford, etc - has a nice rules package & has run pavement for like 20years or smthn...maybe someone more involved with the club / has races with them more often than I have lately, could add some input.

Not a good idea to mix them on pavement..... to much of a hp difference and the national motor corner speed would be much higher

Re: Pavement midget racing.
Just stay off the big high horsepower tracks. The little Honda powered cars ran well with the national cars at Kitley last year. Stay away from tracks like Phoenix, they require lots of HP Grundy might also be a bit big>>Thus the need for all the restriction rules with IRL. They must be doing something right>

It could even be a race-time decision, based on how the cars that sign in perform in hotlaps; if any TQ's, Kenyon Cars, Rookies, Old Guys, etc., seem to be an impending hazard, run them in separate heats and features. Better than cluttering up the rulebook, in my opinion... |
Re: Pavement midget racing.
DAD, We at Grundy county have approved fazing out the DOT tire in favor of American Racer midget pavement tire. We also will be under the D2 engine rules. If you need more information on our upcoming pavement series season, contact me at the info provided below.

Also not a good idea on asphalt.
Thin wall Bailey, and older ERC cars, front axles with 5/8 kingpins... and gasoline.... |
I would most diffently like to see someone or some place run a pavement midget series I have a pavement midget and would like to run it ,had a fontana engine but got rid of it, want to set it up with a Honda 2.4 engine so I could run it maybe a couple places . or even put a wing on it and try nemą but there all a drive for me . from east centeral Indiana

I think pavement racing might be pretty neat with this class as long as they kept to 1/5 or 1/4 mile tracks. My question to you would be how could the pavement specialty cars be handicapped so as not to chase off the regular dirt Midget or Combo cars in order to keep the car count up. The twin tracks of the SpeedDrome in Indy and the Jeffersonvile SportsDrome would be great tracks to set up a Midget race series. We did a TV commercial at the SportsDrome with a winged 600cc upright a few years ago. The sound they produce is entirely different when they are accelerating all the way down the straights. Even with 600cc motors we were turning times equal to and faster than their stock car record times. Honest Dad himself:6::6: |
Dad
Weight, I don't know what kind of tire size they have that could handicap the pavement only car. |
Also saw Mt. Lawn is opening again this year. I loved running a midget there! I'd like to go pavement racing again. Where an old chassis and motor can be competitive. Run what you brung, restrict bigger newer engines. Who cares on tires? No rule, buy what a guy can get his hands on for the best$$$ Spec tire, have to run it all night? Hard compound? May have to drive the thing a little bit then!

At Grundy a 1/3 mile banked. The D2 Cars do very well running mid 15 low 16 second laps very competitive. Anyone wishing to run a pavement D2 or restricted national motor is more than welcome to run with us. Give us a try. You might enjoy it.

I think someone from the shady bowl track was on here (i.o.w) maybe a couple years ago was trying to get feelers to see if mini sprit / lighting sprints would be interested in running there.

Re: Pavement midget racing.
Just got off the phone with Mt. Lawn Speedway and they are going to invite us to practice at the track on some practice days in April. There is a possibility of us getting some races scheduled if there is enough drivers wanting to race there. Was told the cost will be just $10 to get into the pits and practice. Once I get the dates I will post them on here. I will also be working on the rules for the pavement racing and posting them in the next few weeks.
In the meantime I am needing to know who all is interested in running on pavement so I have some ideas on number of drivers interested. |

Re: Pavement midget racing.
We in Illinois are not on DOT tires. We run American Racer slicks and they are an excellent tire for life and cost.

Re: Pavement midget racing.
I have just been asked to see if there would be enough interest to be a part of this race. Please let me know on here or Facebook if you would like to be a part of this race. It will not be a huge purse and I am opening it up to all pavement midgets to be a part of.
