Newbie to site
I am from Northern Illinois and I follow the IRA, my home track is Wilmot Raceway, Wilmot, WI. I am looking to expand my horizons and get as much information on non wing tracks, races, special shows, etc.. for 2016. I have a camping trailer and am looking to attend some races this year. What, where, who, is the best link to get some of this information? When do schedules usually come out? Any and all information like this is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Re: Newbie to site
Maddog Welcome to the best racing site in the world. Most of the non wing schedules usac mscs etc. come out round first of the year. Information on tracks your best bet would be to go to that tracks web site, and you'll also see their specials. Hope you enjoy yourself here. :6:

Re: Newbie to site
Thanks Jim

Maddog, I'm fairly new to the site myself and have loved it since joining. Many kind individuals willing to update all of us on races we aren't able to attend for various reasons reside on this site, and there are always people that are more than happy to give you information on camping, nearby hotels, nearby restaurants, and many other aspects of all the tracks around Indiana and some of our surrounding states. I'll contribute a bit to your expanding venture into sprints: Indiana Sprint Week if you haven't already heard of it, it's typically in the middle of July and is one of, if not the best, week here in Indiana regarding racing. Hope you find this site as useful and enjoyable as I have!

Maddog, you can pretty much park your camper at kokomo and live in dirt track bliss all season long!

Re: Newbie to site
You'll not find a nicer group then what you have here. Helpful, friendly and very passionate about their racing!

Re: Newbie to site
Welcome Maddog. I'm relatively new here myself, have gotten lots of good info here. Got hooked on wingless on my way to Knoxville at Haubstadt 3 yrs. ago, been going to Kokomo Smackdown last 2 years (3 nites of racing!) Wish I could fit Sprint Week into my schedule....
|
Welcome Maddog. I live in central Wisconsin and discovered Indiana racing about 25 years ago. In that time I have seen the greatest drivers and racing imaginable. For me the "must see" events are : Midget Week (5 nights) in mid June, Sprint Week (7 nights) mid July and the Kokomo Smackdown (3 nights) in late August. All of the tracks allow camping and you will meet the nicest people in the world. If you have any questions the people on IOW will be happy to answer them.

Anything midget or sprint week and any race at Kokomo are hard to beat. Lawrenceburg or the burg as it's known is a beautiful modern facility with great racing at every show. Gas city was always exciting but has been semi closed and only ran selected events this last season. There's nothing like openwheel racing in Indiana, great tracks good shows and always the cream of the crop driver wise.

Re: Newbie to site
If you have not been before you need to attend three champ car races at the midwestern miles.

Maddog53 welcome aboard and enjoy the greatest web site that bill built and enjoy the great hospitality from all the great racing events and racing teams and racing families that you will ever meet. Have fun and enjoy. Thanks.

Re: Newbie to site
Maddog I have noticed people have told you about what I call the northern tracks cuz they are all above Indy. I love those tracks too BUT we have other tracks you gotta see too. Lets start a little south of Indy, in beautiful downtown Putnamville , its Lincoln Park Speedway, I think its a quarter mile high banked bullring, runs non wing sprints, mods, and a couple classes of stock cars. Next right down the road is the Terra Haute action track, the only true half mile in Indiana, high speed and its not called the action track for nothing. Next up is the beautiful red clay of Bloomington Speedway, non wing sprints, winged racesaver 305 sprints, and stock cars. Couple hours south is Tri State Speedway, the class track, high speed, high banked quarter mile clay track known for slide jobs and photo finishes. I hope this helps you out, as you see you can go about anywhere in Indiana and see great non wing racing. :6::8:

My advice. Don't be afraid to see some regular shows as well. They give you a better appreciation of the Indiana scene than big events to me. Budget wise they are a great deal too for a traveller.
|
My Advice. If you even remotely like wing racing on this site. Don't mention it. If you are open minded and like both non-wing and wing racing you be murdered on this site. It is one way or the highway.
Welcome aboard Mad Dog. I travel so I prefer the specials as well. I don't want to travel and see 10 cars in the feature. I usually based it on 5K or better. But sometimes those shows have small car counts. |

Paragon also has the Amati 66 lap race which is good to watch them fight it out that long.

Maddog, welcome from Texas!
These guys are great and are very helpful. Sprint week is my dream vacation and I have not been able to pull it off...yet. Bart |
Re: Newbie to site
Also don't over look Midget week! One of the best special race deals going. Hard to beat 5 straight nights of the best Midget and Sprint racing on the planet!

Re: Newbie to site
As another relative newbie to non wing racing and this site I can add my experiences at each of the tracks I have been to in Hoosier state.
Gas City- Have only been once or twice, all I can remember is it is a little joint, DO NOT sit on the lower grandstands entering turn 1. Bad idea. Also, I may have the wrong track, but isn't Gas City the track where you buy a GA ticket and for $1 extra you can walk around the pits before the start of the events and they will clear the pits out during drivers meeting time? Maybe someone else here will know for sure. Kokomo- Another bullring that produces the best 4 wide racing in the state. Unbelievable is all I have to say. There is a reason why there are promotions going on that say Get Your Ass To Kokomo or GYATK for short. Lawrenceburg- If big tracks are your thing, this is for you. A Massive high banked joint that can get dusty and dry but still produce good racing. Don't sit in turn 1 stands unless you want to face the sun all night and get pelted with rocks. Terre Haute- An absolute must do for any fan... watch your first hot lap session against the fence in the infield of Turn 1. HOLY COW!!! One of the greatest views in all of motorsports. Other than that I make my way to the far end of the bleachers in turn 1 to watch them come at me all night. Sure is an awesome sound under the roof! Putnamville- Another bullring that produces wonderful racing. I enjoy sitting hillside in a lawnchair for best view. Bloomington- Another track set up a lot like putnamville, I sit hillside there also. Get the ice cream and pork loin sammich. Haubstadt- WOW! is all I can say about that! You owe it to yourself to make it to the Class Track. Any view ive had has been great. and If Daron Clayton is there, GO!!! It is The House that Clayton Built! Brownstown- IF you like latemodels, this is the joint for you! awesome little racetrack, and if you are lucky to catch a sprint car race there, watch Brady Short run his "line" around that place! I was there for water truck incident a few years back at sprint week. Only sprint show ive seen there. Have seen 3 or 4 latemodel shows. Sprint Week- Sprint Week is awesome, Set up across the course of two weekends Fri-Sat-Sun. off days Mon-Tues. and back at it Wed-Thurs-Fri-Sat. And it truly one of the greatest weeks in all of racing. I catch the last 4 days every year. Midget Week- My favorite week in Indiana! You have all of the benefits of sprint week, and midgets thrown in as headliners! Most drivers pull double duty also! Only downside is its 5 nights in a row, so that means some midweek stops. Looking forward to seeing you at the Show! |
Re: Newbie to site
I catch a lot of those IRA races too, good stuff. but I grew up with the midgets at Sun Prairie and love non wing stuff. With the midgets not running so much up here in Wisconsin the last few years I've ventured south. I have found some fantastic midget racing in Illinois at Macon Jacksonville, spoon river. Sometimes Powri midgets double up with the MOWA winged sprints an you get some of both. Also I like to hit the Springfield mile for silver crown in august then take the short drive to Macon that night.
AS far as Indiana you must hit Kokomo for any sprint show. PERIOD For planning I keep an eye on POWRI USAC IRA MOWA and some of the track websites for their schedules as they come out over the winter and as the season gets rolling. |
Re: Newbie to site
Thanks. I will be checking out all the schedules as you suggested. I am hoping to get to some of these races. It is time to take the wing off for a summer and check these places out. I made Angell Park for the first time this year for the NSL?IRA tilt. Badger midgets ere there also. It was a great night.
