Jim Hurtubise/Tony Hulman Classic To Close Out 2015 Season
After two months of silence, the Terre Haute Action Track roars back to life on Friday night, September 18 for the Jim Hurtubise/Tony Hulman Classic. The USAC Sprint cars will be making appearance #2, while the UMP Mods are also on schedule for the final event of 2015 at the blazing fast half-mile. Open wheel fans across the midwest are waiting for this show with much anticipation, as the last event at the Action Track was the Indiana Sprint Week show in July which provided great racing in front of a near capacity crowd. 19-year old Brookston, IN driver Aaron Farney used the highside of the half-mile to run away through the field, slicing through traffic, and capping it off with a spirited fist pump at the finish line. It was Farney's first career win, besting the field of 37 drivers on hand. Looking back at the history of the Jim Hurtubise race, Brady Bacon won last year, while Jerry Coons, Jr. claimed the hardware in 2013. Since the race came back in 2010, other winners include Jon Stanbrough, Chris Windom, and Chase Stockon. The early years of the Hurtubise saw racing legend, Jack Hewitt take the first two victories in 1990 & 1991. This year's event will mark the 15th Jim Hurtubise named event. Due to a rainout in May, the event will be co-named the Tony Hulman Classic. The race name carries a rich history, as 44 previous events have been held. USAC veteran, Dave Darland, won last year's Tony Hulman race. Other recent winners include Levi Jones ('08, '09), Jerry Coons, Jr. ('10, '13), Chris Windom ('11), and Bud Kaeding ('12). Cary Faas and Levi Jones have the most wins with three apiece, while eight drivers have won two events. Adding to the Friday, September 18 show will be the UMP Modifieds, a class which has been a mainstay on the schedule for the last couple of years. Three different events this season have produced three different Modified feature winners. Kenny Wallace won the opener, Bradley Sterrett took the checkered at the Summit Modified National event, and Brian Shaw won on Sumar night. Pit gates will open at 3:00, grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps will start at 6:00, qualifying at 7:00, and racing will take the green at 7:30. General admission to the stands will be $25, infield admission $15, and children 10 and under are free. “HULMAN/HURTUBISE” CLASSIC FRIDAY AT TERRE HAUTE
A rare “double” is on tap Friday at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track as the AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series returns to the half-mile dirt oval for the “Tony Hulman and Jim Hurtubise Classics.” The double was necessitated after rain forced postponement of the originally-scheduled “Tony Hulman Classic” during May. Robert Ballou of Rocklin, Calif. continues atop the standings seeking his initial USAC championship. He has recorded nine feature victories this year and a victory this weekend could land him in exclusive company. Only Tom Bigelow (14 in 1977), J.J. Yeley (13 in 2003), Pancho Carter (12 in 1976 and 10 in 1977), Larry Dickson (12 in 1968 and 10 in 1970), Bubby Jones (11 in 1979) and Jay Drake (10 in 2000) have posted double-digit single-season wins in the National Sprint series. Ballou holds a 24-point lead over Chase Stockon entering Friday’s race at Terre Haute. Dave Darland, the all-time series winner and defending “Tony Hulman Classic” champion, is third in the standings, just 52 back of Ballou. Former “Tony Hulman Classic” champions Darland (1993 and 2014), Jerry Coons Jr. (2010 and 2013), Chris Windom (2011), Jon Stanbrough (2002 and 2007) and Tracy Hines (2001) are expected to compete Friday. Darland, Coons and Stanbrough are hoping to become only the third three-time race winner joining Cary Faas (1992-94-98) and Levi Jones (2005-08-09). UMP Modifieds Set To Run With USAC Sprints At Terre Haute Action Track
NASCAR's Ken Schrader Scheduled To Compete This coming Friday, September 18, the Terre Haute Action Track will be closing out its 2015-season with the Jim Hurtubise/Tony Hulman Classic. While the USAC Amsoil Sprint Cars will be headlining the show, a number of fans will be excited to watch the UMP Modifieds fly around the half-mile. So far this season, the Modifieds have competed in three different events in Vigo County. Retired NASCAR driver and dirt track hotshoe, Kenny Wallace, raced to the checkered flag with Brian Shaw, Paul Miles, David Shain and Scott Martin completing the top five. On Sunday, June 7, Bloomington, IN driver Bradley Sterrett raced to the win in the Summit Nationals Modified event with Tyler Nicely, Josh Harris, Schrader, and Dave Baldwin in the top five. The Mods most recent appearance occurred on Thursday, July 2 as part of the Sumar Classic for the USAC Silver Crown cars. Brian Shaw took the top prize as David Shain, Richie Lex, Rob Starkey, and Dave Baldwin were top five finishers. This Friday's event could see a fourth different winner in as many tries and Shain or Schrader would be two of the favorites to do that, having strong runs earlier this year. Pit gates open on September 18 at 3:00, grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps start at 6:00, qualifying at 7:00, and racing is set to go green at 7:30. General admission is $25 for adults, $15 for the infield, and free for kids 10 and under. Does Kenny Schraeder and when he is here Kenny Wallace get an appearance fee for racing modifieds or do they sign in and pay the pit pass money and only receive the purse like everyone else? I have always wondered because the winning purse to win a UMP race hardly seems worth it to tow as far as they do to race here.

Re: USAC Sprints & UMP Mods Set For September 18 In Terre Ha
Every time I hear of Schrader running a mod somewhere, the "appearance money" is mentioned.
There was a $5,000 to win Modified show in Illinois two weeks ago that drew 65 cars, and he ran an hour north against 10 modifieds or so for $600 to win. |
8 laps in darland leads

Re: USAC Sprints & UMP Mods Set For September 18 In Terre Ha
Just taking a guess here, but the cars are likely based in the St Louis area considering both are from there and the number of races they run around in the Midwest every year. No idea though on appearance fees. I'm pretty sure Schrader would show up where he wants regardless.

Clouser flips hard in turn 2. He is okay!

Re: USAC Sprints & UMP Mods Set For September 18 In Terre Ha
It was a good night for Robert Ballou on a couple of fronts. First off, he won the race and added his name to the list of drivers who have won these two Action Track feature events. The first named after one of the great drivers that caused the place to be known as "THE Action Track" and the other named for the Terre Haute born racing icon that made the world's greatest race track (IMS), what it is today. Early in the race Ballou was the hard charger, coming from his 10th place starting position, all the way up to third in just a handful of laps. Chris Windom was just ahead of him in second and Dave Darland was in a different zip code, completely checked out, in the lead. Then there was a yellow. Darland may have never been caught if there hadn't been that yellow, but there it was. And you never want to give drivers like Chris Windom and Robert Ballou a second chance. Because more often than not, they will take advantage of a new lease on life. On this restart, Dave started to take off again, until they found their way back into lapped traffic. When given the opportunity, Windom was the first one to pounce, with a slider in turns one and two. The first time, it didn't stick and Darland fought him off. The next time they came off of four, the top three were all in a tight group. Windom threw a slider again and this time ended up in front of Dave in turn two. But it was very close and to avoid Chris, Dave ran it up into the cushion and bounced it off the wall or came very close to doing so, it was hard to tell. This caused him to lose momentum and Ballou went on the attack and just like that, the leader was in third place. Robert chased Chris for a few laps and Chris drifted too high in the exact same spot, hit the wall hard and just that quick, The Madman seized the lead. Windom regrouped and mounted a comeback on Ballou, but couldn't get back to within striking distance. And on the other front, Ballou did what he had to do points wise, as he put a couple of points on his lead over third place Darland and somewhere around 17 or 18 on second place Chase Stockon. He was fast, but also drove a smart race, by waiting for his two largest opportunities to come to him and opening the door and running through it, when they knocked.
The racing was good all night long. They had a decent crowd and everybody got their money's worth. And Mother Nature not only spared us, but also put on a hell of a fireworks show, to our north. Jerry |
Re: USAC Sprints & UMP Mods Set For September 18 In Terre Ha
Very enjoyable evening at the Action Track; the wind was blowing from the right direction for a change (if you were seated in the grandstand) and the on track product was very competitive all evening. A lot of people grumble when the modifieds are run before the sprints (and I've been guilty of that), but that has become the norm at TH, so I have decided to anticipate that in advance. I thought the modifieds put on a pretty good show last night. Ken Schrader pulled it off, but he had plenty of competition. I was on the road by a little after 9:00PM, and you can't beat that!
Dave Darland made an absolutely amazing drive from his fifth starting spot, and would have almost certainly been the victor, had it not been for the red and yellow flags. BTW, didn't the announcer state it was to be a forty lap feature as the cars were lining up? |
I heard that he said 40 laps and said he must of been given the wrong information. Lol
|
Please tell me someone got Ballous wheelstand comin to the checkers in his heat race win!!? Great racing all night, loved the feature Ballou, Darland, Windom and the rest of the drivers put on a great show in front of a really good crowd!
