Meseraull Claims $5k in BOSS / Hensel Memorial

Meseraull Claims $5,000 in BOSS / Hensel Memorial Win at Fremont

San Jose, California native Thomas Meseraull made the Cali natives 3 for 3 in the Mo Vaughn Transport - BOSS / Hensel Memorial by claiming the $5,000 first prize on Saturday night. The two previous events were won by Robert Ballou (Rocklin, CA) in 2013 and Kody Swanson (Kingsburg, CA) in 2014. The win however, did not come easy for "T-Mez" as a miscue after his heat win found him upside down in the Stan Courtad #9x in Fremont Speedway's first turn.

The evening began with 43 Mo Vaughn Transport BOSS sprint cars signing in for qualifications. The one lap - against the clock proved tricky for some and advantageous for others. Tracy Hines in the Hines #4T set fast time with a 14.494 to edge Meseraull and Kody Swanson out of the fast time award. After qualifying, Hines was honored on the front stretch where he rolled the die to bring up the "8" inversion. Therefore, the fastest 8 cars who transferred out of their heat would make the 8 car inversion.

Heat race events saw the top 6 inverted in each heat with the top 4 advancing to the main event and getting their qualifying time back. Hines, Meseraull, Derek Hastings, Shane Cottle and Landon Simon all won heat race events. Meseraull made his win a little extra exciting for the fans as he hooked the cushion and flipped in turn 1 after taking the checkered flag. The team was able to make quick repairs and be ready for the main event. The twin B-Main events were claimed by Kody Swanson and Todd Keen.

The 33 lap Hensel Memorial found tour regulars Kent Wolters and Cody Gardner pacing the field to the starters green flag. Scotty Weir and Ted Hines made up row 2 with Mike Miller and Landon Simon in the 3rd row. Meseraull and Hines would start together in row 4 with Cottle starting back in the #13 position.

The initial start saw 3 cars coming together in turn 1 and 2 ultimately eliminating Bill Rose and Michael Fischesser. At the drop of the second green it was Tipp City, Ohio driver Kent Wolters who rocketed to a comfortable early lead over Gardner. Several cars were on the move early including Meseraull, Swanson, and Cottle who had started 13th. Landon Simon was also on the move early, however, working lap #3, an over eager Simon spun in turn 1 to bring out the race's first caution.

Back under green, Wolters continued to show the way but Meseraull was clearly the man on the move taking over the runner-up spot on lap 6. Just as the lead battle was taking shape, the race's second and final caution flew when Andy Feil spun to a stop working lap #9. The restart order saw Wolters leading with Meseraull, Cottle, Gardner, Tracy Hines, Weir, Swanson, Brandon Spithaler, Brian Smith and Ted Hines rounding out the top 10.

On the restart, Meseraull needed less than a lap to take over the top spot to officially lead lap #9. Cottle quickly moved to the runner-up spot and over the next 23 laps the 2 heavyweight contenders would throw down in a battle royale for a $5,000 payday. Meseraull, on all four Hoosier tires, held steady at the point as the charging Cottle flirted with disaster reeling in the leader in the Hazen #57 clad with all four American Racers. The duo entered lapped traffic on lap 18 as the war waged on with Meseraull able to keep the Courtad 9 just a few car lengths in front.

The deciding factor of the race may have come on lap #25 when Meseraull dove inside a lapped car exiting turn 4 and Cottle throttled the car to the high side making it 3 wide down the narrow Fremont front stretch. Contact was made but everyone stayed straight and Meseraull was able to pull away by a few car lengths. The final 8 circuits saw Cottle try valiantly to reel in Meseraull, and a last lap herculean effort saw Cottle throw the car in deep to pull even with the leader off turn 4, but Meseraull had the momentum to hang on by a car length in yet another exciting BOSS feature finish! Defending race winner Kody Swanson charged from his 11th starting spot to round out the podium.

The rest of the top 5 were Tracy Hines and Brian Smith who was driving the Mike Hensel tribute #33 car. The rest of the top 10 were Kent Wolters, Cody Gardner, Dallas Hewitt, Brandon Spithaler, and Shawn Westerfeld. Hewitt was the Bridge Restaurant "Hard Charger" of the night and took home an extra $333 courtesy of Hughes Racing. Westerfeld quietly extended his points lead over defending champ Mike Miller and inaugural champion Dustin Smith.

The tour is now silent for 2 weeks before returning to action on Friday, September 4th at Moler Raceway Park in Williamburg, Ohio. This will be the very first visit to the 1/4 mile bullring located deep in southwestern Ohio. Watch for details on this event in the coming days!

Keep up the good work BOSS. You guys are doing some good things. Not only a high car count, but some good high quality cars too. I was at Atomic a few weeks ago and saw a great show. A few other series could learn at lot from you guys with the ideas you have.

Don't know how far back in there it is or how old the google earth pic is but Moler is in the woods. Actually the sign says it's a mile and a half off of St. Rt. 32 (North).

I was at Fremont, in the stands, and the fans hated the qualifying as it took time from the show, the hot sun beat up the fans, 43 timers (+ push jeeps) dried out the track, and the real cream of the crop transferred through the heats regardless of time trials: Hines, Meseraull, Hastings, Cottle and Landon Simon all won heat races, Go back to the regular BOSS draw and forget the time trials. You have a good thing going, don't change a successful format.

Would the fans rather see Me, Tmez, Cottle and Hines all in one heat because of a pill draw or us each have to race our way from 6th? I understand it takes time but in my opinion watching a driver go as hard as they can for 1-2 laps is awesome. Qualifying (35th) is the reason you got to see Dallas Hewitt put on a killer show in the B main and follow it up with a 24th to 8th in the feature.

The more the top class is on the track, The better. Done right, Qualifying takes NO time from the show. You need to hotlap a half hour earlier to get the start time right. Thats what you do.

Burn up the track? It wasn't prepped right in the first place. Haven't been to Fremont in years but it was always a black sheet of ice when I went.

The results with start and finish positions show there was tons of passing.
Can't have fun at the race track.................................. :7:

I don't like qualifying, one at a time, for all the reasons mentioned. Like the way Kokomo does it during hot laps. Or do it in groups of 4 for the field and then set your heats. But BOSS has it going on with all the sponsors and many ways for drivers to earn additional prizes or money. This is the way things were done years ago. I have liked this series since the beginning and still think another series should learn from BOSS . Good Job
Congratulations to Tmez and Simmon for all their wins this month.

Re: Meseraull Claims $5k in BOSS / Hensel Memorial

Again, I was at Fremont and talking to many fans around me. The thirty something's and their little fans complaining early about dragging the show out, got up an left the grounds about 10 pm, missing the feature races. All of us old die hards need to listen to those that have a future stake in the racing we have loved for many years. Young people and families want a show in 3 hours or less. Their complaint about qualifying was legitimate and they probably won't come back since they left before the great feature show Cottle and Hewitt put on for the gray beards. Just reporting what I was told during conversations with fans around me. If you were there and heard otherwise you need to report that information. If you are reporting here your opinions, wants, and desires, please state your comments as such. See you at the races!

Chris Wilson 8/17/15 5:00 PM

As someone that lobbied with Aaron in favor of qualifying since nearly the beginning, I was happy to see him try it. I sure didn't see anyone leaving the race track before the features. The cream always seems to rise to the top regardless of format. But at least if you qualify bad, you can only blame yourself vs. the pill draw which is total luck. Fremont runs about as efficient a show as you could ask for and the track was excellent all night.
It was a great show.

Chris, I respect your position on qualifying. I guess the paying fans will be the ultimate judge at the front gate. I hope to see you and Chad at WRP on Saturday.

Re: Meseraull Claims $5k in BOSS / Hensel Memorial

Maybe it did, I will say I wasn't there. But like I said, Done right, Qualifying shouldn't and doesn't interfear with the show.

Race times 7. Start hotlaps at 530 qualify 6-645 and race at 7

I don't get it? What time the feature get done? or racing get started for that matter?

Chuck who loves single car qualifying

Chris Wilson 8/17/15 5:45 PM

I believe the feature was done at 10:45ish.

sprinter14 8/17/15 5:46 PM

First off I want to thank everyone for their input. Also a very big thank you to everyone who supports the series as promoters, fans, crews, drivers and sponsors are what makes me proud to have this series. I do listen to and consider everyone's opinions and appreciate constructive criticism.

Standard BOSS shows will remain with the draw / redraw format. We used time trials at Fremont because $5,000 to win is a lot of money on the line. The format used on Saturday did still provide the passing and excitement we are know for. From now on, BOSS shows that pay $2,500 to win or more will use the qualifying format. We have offers on the table for several more high paying shows next season.

We hope to see everyone at our remaining shows:

Friday 9-4: Moler
Saturday 9-12: Montpelier, IN
Saturday 9-19: Waynesfield
Saturday 10-3: Fremont
Saturday 10-10: Eldora

The race scheduled for Sunday, September 6th at 35 Raceway has been cancelled.

Re: Meseraull Claims $5k in BOSS / Hensel Memorial

Dadgummit I was looking forward to the Moler & 35 races, guess it will just be Moler.

My 1 pet peeve is when the guys run low 14's & high 15's & ya got a guy running a 19 second lap. Cmon man. 2 seconds off would be bad enough & I like high car counts but if you can't run faster than the trucks it needs to stay on the trailer.

There was only 1 heat where the fella didn't make the transfer & I do believe he ended up 3rd in the feature.

I got home at 1 am. Sure would have liked to have seen Wolters take it. Maybe someday. Great run by Brian Smith, he seems to do ok without the wing. Someone sign him up for BOSS next year.

Cottle would have made it really interesting if he wouldn't have slid out of the groove in turn 2 a couple of times.

JK 8/17/15 9:51 PM

I was at Fremont and thoroughly enjoyed the show. The qualifying was good for driver exposure as they go out one at a time and the announcer can talk about each driver, car owner and sponsor. I thought the racing program moved along nicely all night long. I stayed and watched every feature Saturday night and even with an hour drive I was still home by 12:30a.m.
