POWRi National Midgets At Fairbury, IL

Given that Fairbury, Illinois is less than an hour from home for us we're excited about the POWRi National Midgets coming to Fairbury American Legion Speedway for the very first time.

This is the first time in many years that open wheel cars have graced the Fairbury 1/4 mile dirt. The midgets will be running for a decent winners payout of $3000.00. Fairbury is a hard core dirt late model track and they've bundled the POWRi National Midgets with a $2000.00 to win mud taxi feature and a $1000.00 modified mud taxi feature.

We can depend on FALS to run a good, tight show with high quality track prep and with only 2 support divisions we should be on our way home relatively early after what those of us who are familiar with FALS expect to be a great midget show.

Here's to hoping the weather cooperates and this is a successful and profitable show for FALS so they bring back the POWRi boys and girls soon and often!! Hope to see some of you Indiana folks over here for this deal!! I don't think you'll be disappointed.

When is this race ?

Re: POWRi National Midgets At Fairbury, IL

Thanks for askin' Jim, especially since I inadvertently and absentmindedly forgot to put the date in the original post.

It's Saturday night July 11th.

They will qualify the dirt late models but I don't know if they qualify the modifieds or not. and generally hot laps are at 6 pm CDT.

Fairbury & Belle-Clair Speedway
July 11th & 12th, 2015

Millstadt, IL - Coming off three straight nights of racing from the 4th of July weekend, including the Pepsi Nationals at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, POWRi will return to Illinois this weekend. Saturday, July 11th at Fairbury American Legion Speedway will star the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series, co-sanctioned with the Zimbrick Chevrolet of Sun Prairie/Mid-State Equipment Badger Midget Series, paying $3000 to WIN and $250 to start. Sunday, July 12th at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, IL will feature both the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series and the Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series for the "Battle at Belle-Vegas III."

The arrival of POWRi at the 1/3 mile semi-banked oval of Fairbury American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, IL will be the first actual appearance the series will have made after the inaugural appearance in 2014 was rained out. Saturday's event will also be the solo visit for the series in 2015. Sunday's show at Belle-Clair will be the fourth POWRi visit of 2015, with the previous being the final night of Illinois SPEED Week where Tyler Thomas took the midget feature win and Joe B. Miller held off Nathan Benson for the win in micro competition.

Currently halfway through the season, Darren Hagen holds a comfortable lead in Lucas Oil National Midget Series competition over Andrew Felker, even with Felker's back-to-back wins at Macon Speedway for POWRi Freedom Fest. In the Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series, 2013 and 2014 champion, Nathan Benson sits atop the standings over Aryton Gennetten. Benson has three wins this season, doubling-down this past weekend in the POWRi Freedom Fest at Macon Speedway.

Seen a handful of video's from FALS, including the 2014 PDC (Prairie Dirt Classic) and I must say, what a phenomenal race track. Perfect shape, perfect cushion, perfect clay. If I wasn't 12 hours away I would be there in a heartbeat. Hope you guys have a great show on Saturday night.

DirtHawk, they do NOT allow coolers, period. With, or without beer.

Also, they do allow camping on speedway property.

It's been quite a while since we've attended FALS (like I said before, it's a hardcore late model facility) but I believe the gates open at 4 PM CDT. and I know for sure hot laps start at 6 PM CDT.

Some call FALS a 1/3 mile but in reality it is a 1/4, I've measured it up on Google Earth more than once.

Hopefully the weather doesn't interfere this weekend. Last Summer the day and night before the POWRi show was scheduled it rained 6" and they never rescheduled.

FALS is owned by the local American Legion Post and they depend on a lot of volunteer help thus their season dates are limited and there is little latitude in rescheduling rain-outs. They have some funky policies if a rain-out occurs after the racing program starts, too.

I made up my mind years ago, that when POWRi is running at Little Belleville, then thats where I'll be, even if there are races closer by.That's where I'll be on Sunday night.

I'm so sorry to get off topic in another reply earlier. I can see now why I post less and less here these days More and more self appointed moderators.

For the record though to bring it back on topic, I intend to visit Fairbury on Saturday night as well as Little Belleville.

I sincerely apologize for posting something that clearly didn't sit well you. That truly wasn't the intent and I am surely not attempting to be a moderator in any capacity, self appointed or otherwise. I merely speculated that you had inadvertently posted in an unrelated thread.

If we would by chance cross paths at Fairbury Saturday night I would relish the honor of buying you a beer.

Again, I apologize!

Re: POWRi National Midgets At Fairbury, IL

No need to apologize really, but consider it accepted. I wasnt the first person to post off topic, and I took it as you were singling me out. I havent posted much lately, and yesterday I had a few posts that were off topic a bit,and some with thin skin apparently didnt care for my posts. I always figure message boards are like a group of people standing around in a circle chatting. You might start off the conversation on one topic, but soon it changes to something else, and then you can even end back where you started in the first place.

I intended on going to Fairbury last year till it got rained out. It would be a new track for me,which gets harder to do every year,as I have been to about everyplace I've wanted to go on my bucket list over the years. POWRi midgets were the reason for going. I've become a big fan of POWRi,and go to many of their races each year. I like the way they run an efficient show, make the fans feel welcome, and get them involved, and the racing is pretty good everywhere they go. Most times I go watch them run,I drive past races that are closer by to get there.I usually go where I feel I will see the best race, and I wouldnt drive all over Illinois and beyond if I thought I was going to see a crappy race. The bummer about going to POWRi races this year is hearing that announcer Jim Childers will be hanging it up after this season. They will have a tough time finding someone that can be interesting, knowledgeable, and engage/entertain the fans as well. Pretty big shoes to fill I think....

ShaneMugavin57 7/9/15 6:45 PM

Been to Fairbury 4 times now working for the AMS or those modified mud taxis you call them. Been going to races for 43 years and love sprints and midgets but Fals has produced 3 of the best races in my top ten ever seen. If you don't watch the late models and mods you are a fool.
They have transponders and usually can peel through each class of qualifying in ten minutes, A couple tips for you. If your old and crotchety which is most on this board you will be better suited on the front stretch. The young party crowd is more at home on the backstretch and the view is better because you are closer to the track. Fairbury gets done early most nights but don't be in a hurry to leave. Most teams stay and Fals sometimes supplies cake or pizza or even beer. I have seen the pits still full 2 hours after a race. don't be upset if they work the track a little. They are quick and produce an outstanding surface come feature time. Mike Norris on the Microphone is also one of the best in the business.

We've lived our whole life just about 40 minutes from Fairbury and the original track was built way before I was born so you're not telling us anything we don't already know, especially when you say you've been there all of 4 times. We used to go to watch races there 4 times in one week when they used to double up fair week and the week before. We learned to love sprint car racing at FALS given that we witnessed racing there when they ran wingless sprinters (super modifieds) there on a weekly basis with guys by the name of Bubby Jones, Larry Cannon, Dean Shirley and Bobby Carrigan among many others in sprint cars every week. We were very young but we were there.

We may, or may not watch the fendered cars Saturday night, but if we choose not to I sincerely doubt that makes us fools. Especially since I also seriously doubt that you've ever laid eyes on me or the group we'll be with. Save your sanctimoniously judgmental names for someone you actually know something about.

As far as the backstretch party atmosphere at FALS is concerned, it is actually quite tame in comparison to say...Eldora for the Kings Royal and I'm guessing it's a safe bet that many of the open wheel fans making the effort to attend the Saturday night program have experienced the Kings Royal. The hard core FALS regulars are very provincial and many of them believe that racing without fendered cars is not worthy of their interest but the partying is no more intense than most anywhere else. I'm not old and crotchety but I don't think anyone who is would be offended by the backstretch activities. The back stretch crowd is okay, they just love their late models.

And just for the record, the view is just fine on the front stretch. The only difference is that the 1/2 mile horse track is between the front stretch covered grandstands and the 1/4 mile race track. The sightlines are just fine from the frontstretch grandstands and that comes from someone who's been to FALS at least 50 to 75 times or more over the years.

ShaneMugavin57 7/9/15 8:22 PM

You misunderstood my post it was for those that haven't been. Nothing is wrong with the sight lines in the front stretch and no the backstretch is not that rowdy but there is a age difference. My post was trying to highlight what a great place it is even after you tried to demean the other classes.if your a race fan then be a race fan if you are only an open wheel fan then that's fine but I would suggest keeping the disparaging remarks to yourself because half of these tracks wouldn't exist without them.

kidrock 7/10/15 12:10 AM

I have sat one the both the front and back stretch, I'm getting older and would rather sit on the front stretch nothing against those on the back stretch just not my game anymore. I wanted to go to the races last year and would really like to go this but, just not sure I'm going to be able to make it happen but, for those of you that are going it should be a great show. Have fun no matter where you sit at. Still hoping I can make it.

What are the odds that all the rain creating rainouts is getting a lot of us a little grumpy on this board? I told my brother today that it hasn't even felt like summer yet with all the wet, dreary weather we've been having. A month of sunshine and plenty of racing would probably do us all some good. I hope everyone gets their racing fix in this weekend and in the weeks ahead. All the best to those that are coming in for ISW from long distance and may you experience an Indiana dry spell! Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Andrew S. Quinn 7/11/15 4:29 PM

Rained out. ..

Yep, again this year the POWRi National Midgets are rained out at Fairbury. Same thing happened last year and they didn't reschedule. I gotta' bad feeling there is a good chance that is exactly what will happen again this year.

It's a shame. We finally get a decent open wheel show close to home and it rains it out two years in a row. Shoulda' went to Kokomo!!

Well, Sunday night, Little Belleville here we come!!

I'll be heading to Belle-Clair! Supposed to be super hot with humidity to match; that's the only downside.

Rained here in Bloomington, Illinois a couple times this afternoon and early evening.
Seems like our weather often heads toward Kokomo (almost due west of us) and I had a less-than-optimistic hope that it would skip Kokomo. Raining here again for about the last 45 minutes or so............. :7:

Christopher Bell wins after getting caught up in a crash mid race or so over Darren Hagen and Andrew Felker. Heck of a race...as usual at Little Belleville.

The 3 hour round trip for my 1st visit to Belleville was certainly worth it.

Re: POWRi National Midgets At Fairbury, IL

I wish there was a way to describe all the action going on thru out the entire race,on top of watching Bell and Bayston come back thru the field after getting caught up in the wreck in turn 3. So many sliders going on at each end of the track, its hard to compute it all in your head what you are really watching!

There is a reason I drive the 246 miles from my house there whenever they race midgets there, even if there is a race closer by to go to. Last nights race was a good example of why its at the top of my list. I have seen so many great races there, and hardly any duds,so my expectations are really high whenever I go there. Last night didnt disappoint! The midget feature was over at 9:30,and I was on my back to Indy. I plan accordingly for work the next day,and I am up and will be heading there shortly, with more sleep than normal after a trip to Little Belleville on a Sunday night.

Re: POWRi National Midgets At Fairbury, IL

I told a guy sitting behind me that I needed split screen vision. Ended up mostly watching Bell when he was coming back thru the field. I was impressed to see the track crew turn the track over both after hot laps & before the features.

POWRI consistently delivers a great show for the $15 or $20 gate admission most nights. Very entertaining & high caliber racing. They must keep the guys happy as they consistently pull in guys like Bell, Clauson, Rico etc when their schedule allows. Also, their core group of drivers is top notch as well. I hope they come up with a good PA announcer once Mr. Childers retires at the end of the year. He is fun to listen to & adds to the show.

Re: POWRi National Midgets At Fairbury, IL

Bell and Andruskevitch take "Battle at Belle-Vegas III" Victories
Sunday, July 12th

Belleville, IL - Christopher Bell earned his fifth POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series victory of 2015. Involved in an incident early one, Bell came from the back to claim the 30 lap event on the high-banked 1/5th mile Belle-Clair Speedway for the National Midget portion of the "Battle at Belle-Vegas III." Aaron Andruskevitch of Riverton, Illinois survived an action-packed, 20 lap feature event to snag his second POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series victory of 2015.

Starting on the pole with Darren Hagen to the outside, Bell would narrowly miss the jump on the initial restart as Shane Cockrum would stop in turns one and two, issuing the first caution of the evening, calling back the start. Lined back up, Bell's Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports Toyota-powered Bullet would get a much better start and take the early lead. As the field started to get sorted out, Kyle Schuett would bring out the second caution of the evening after looping it off turn four. With two laps in the books, Bell would rocket off as Spencer Bayston challenged Hagen for the second position. On lap seven the caution would fly as both Daniel Robinson and Tucker Klaasmeyer's machines sat tangled atop turn two.

Coming back to green, Bell would assert his lead as Bryan Clauson edged into the fourth position. With 11 laps down, misfortune would hit as Christopher Bell came upon lap traffic; cars would collide and collect, including Andy Malpocker, Tucker Klaasmeyer, Kyle Schuett, Daniel Adler, and leader Bell and second place runner, Spencer Bayston. Inheriting the top position, Darren Hagen would lead the field to green in the Austin Brown, Esslinger-powered BOSS Chassis entry. Immediately coming back to green, the racing would be slowed as Tyler Thomas stopped on the back stretch. Resuming racing, Hagen headed straight to the top side of the high-banked 1/5th mile, working to put more space between himself and the rest of the field, as Jake Neuman slid Bryan Clauson for second.

On lap 14, Gage Walker would bring out the caution after looping it on the bottom of turns one and two. This time when Hagen showed the way, Austin Brown would steal second from Neuman coming off turn two. Three laps later, Spencer Bayston would stop on the front stretch after contact, while separately, Gage Walker and Ryan Robinson tangled in turn four. Coming back to green, Hagen would check out until Dereck King slowed entering turn three, coming to a stop on the front stretch and bringing out the caution. Coming back to green, Bell would slide for third from the fifth position, causing Jake Neuman running in third to attempt to turn back underneath him, only to spin and bring the caution back out.

With 23 laps complete, Hagen would try his best to hold off Brown, Felker and Bell coming to green, but Bell's head of steam would be too much as Bell slid for the top position off turn four on lap 27 to lead the final three laps. Coming in second was Darren Hagen with Andrew Felker in third. Austin Brown earned fourth and Tanner Thorson took fifth.
"I definitely didn't expect to get up through there," Bell said. "POWRi midget week when I started in the back, I wasn't able to make my way back up there, but I hope the fans enjoyed that one because I did in the racecar."

"I've got to apologize to my teammate," stated Hagen. "On that restart, I got in there and just hit the fence in one and two and got real tight dragging the brake. Totally my fault, but hat's off to Christopher Bell and his team to come from the back."

"Just started too deep and kept catching the cautions wrong," said Felker. "Had another awesome car and salvaged a 13th to third. Definitely felt like we had a car to win. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going."

Aaron Andruskevitch of Riverton, Illinois outlasted multiple cautions and one red flag to claim his second POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series feature win of 2015. Starting outside the front row to Joey Wirth, Andruskevitch took command on the opening lap, pulling away on the treacherous Belle-Vegas curb. Joe B. Miller brought home the second position after starting tenth, while Kurt Westerfield earned a career-first podium finish rounding out the top three. Dereck King took fourth from 18th and Tucker Klaasmeyer earned fifth.

"The old motor is wore out," Andruskevitch said. "We ran that motor all season last year and I think tonight's night 31 on that motor. We struggled with the car midseason there at SPEED Week and found out we had some torsion bars go bad. We didn't touch the car, just put new torsion bars on it and the Stallard's hooked up.

"We had a little trouble there, but it's all good," commented Miller. "I got to thank everybody that helps out on this machine. Without them, this wouldn't be possible.

"This is one of my goals," said Westerfield. "I set out this year to make the podium at a POWRi show and we accomplished it tonight. I want to thank my dad and all my sponsors."

Ran through this whole thread and never found out if the race has been rescheduled I would like to visit Fairbury but not for fenders. Is it rescheduled or not?

Chris Nunn 7/13/15 8:02 PM

Not going to Fairbury because of fenders is suspect. It's home to the three time and defending race of the year in late models. Just watch video. The place is absolutely bonkers for any type of racing. You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't go at least once.

racefan20 7/13/15 9:59 PM

Re: POWRi National Midgets At Fairbury, IL

Sorry Chris I'd like to go but I'd rather see some open wheel while I am there. I'll watch the fenders too but I wont drive all the way up there just for them. Still wondering if there is a make-up date.
