Sounds like you have a clutch free travel adjustment problem. Clutches in 1000cc Midgets don't come under much abuse and should last forever if adjusted properly.

Drop your oil pan and clean it real good>>>also drop your pick up and clean it also>>back flush it. Change your oil and filter>>>> that fiber will destroy an engine very quickly. Might want to change your filter again after the next race and top up oil.

Any large cycle shop would have the parts you need and they all ship about the same>>>sounds like you need next day air for next week. While you don't need high performance parts>>a high performance kit like Barnes might be cheaper than OEM.

You did replace the hydraulic clutch right? Check and doble check your free travel at the leaver.

Castrol doesn't recommend their GTX for oil bath clutch use either, but I believe they make an oil for bikes. Bob

Sounds to me you are using a oil that is not designed for 4 stroke motorcycle. There are lots of good brands out there with everybody having there favorite one. I have used Valvoline 20W50 4 stroke motorcycle in my R1 Yamaha with absolutely no clutch or engine trouble whatsoever.
Stock clutches are more than good enough for 1000 cc midget. Just remember plenty of free travel and use a motor oil that is designed for a 4 stroke motorcycle not car, truck or ATV and you will not have any trouble.

Re: 08 Gsxr 1000 clutch

We have used a whole lot of different performance oils in our car. Both automotive and motorcycle, with no ill effects on the clutch. Motorcycle oil designed for wet clutches has a friction modifier in it much like is used in anti lock rear ends and automatic transmissions. It actually aids in allowing the paper of the clutch linings slip just a little bit when engaging.

Ever driven a posi-traction that needed the additive in it>>>> they tend to chatter and snap and bang when going around turns, a little 2 ounce squirt bottle of friction additive fixes it right up. We even use rear end posi-trac friction modifier stuff in Ford automatic transmissions when they chatter on the 2-3 up-shifts.

I would not worry about the oil I would worry about adjustment of the clutch cable>>>also a dragging>>sticking>>or binding cable can also cause you a lot of grief.

We always use Valvoline 20w50 motorcycle oil for wet clutch, Never ever had an issue. Ran 03, 08 GSXR 1000 MOTORS.

DAD is right about clutch adjustment. Very important.

Bear10 4/25/15 2:57 PM

Always ran Rotella no problems... motor builders will tell u not to use synthetic... it is all about clutch adjustment 1/4 inch of play in handle and good to go... while the car is sitting on the floor in shop put it in gear obviously without the motor running and try and roll it then pull in the clutch and push it (it will push hard but still should roll ) whole pushing let out on the clutch. It should lock up tight... thats a good way to check

jyoung8j 4/25/15 4:46 PM

Yea I think the problem is in the free play in handle.. I've talked to my bud who builds 8 sec drag bikes and he said rotella is fine he uses it and the problem lays in adjustment.. I'm sure it's adjustment not whether clutch is getting correct oil

Re: 08 Gsxr 1000 clutch

:)just put it in high gear with motor running>>>>>hold throttle at 2500 rpm>>>>ease out on clutch lever slowly>>>>>if it kills motor the clutch is ok>>>>if it slips the clutch is bad>>>>>:)

You would be surprised how far you can go with clutch adjusted improperly and slipping and then just by adjusting the clutch correctly it takes off and works properly again. ;):14:

The above is a pretty good check. Clutches do not glaze>>> the steel plates do get hot and warp and get hard spots in them. If the above test works after adjusting the cable>>> I would change oil and filter and give it another try.

Have you gone on line and downloaded a manual for your engine>>>a very good idea>>Then all you have to do is go back to the computer and print up the pages you need.

When all else fails reed the directions.
