Re: Bloomington USAC/MSCS Updates

Tracy Hines and Carson Short made up the front row for the 30 lap feature event, with Short leading lap one over Hines. CJ Leary moved in to battle with Hines for second on lap three, only to see the caution fly for Aaron Farney. Brady Bacon and Leary battled for third when racing resumed, with Leary holding the spot. Bryan Clauson moved into the top five, getting around Shane Cottle on lap five. Clauson then moved around Leary for fourth. On lap eight, Clauson moved under Bacon for third and set his sights on Hines for second. He got around Hines on lap nine, and then caught the leader Short on lap 10. Clauson threw a slide job on Short and took the lead on lap 12. Behind them, Jon Stanbrough had moved into the fourth position after starting in the middle of the pack. Clauson had stretched his lead to almost a full straight over Short with ten laps remaining. Hines and Stanbrough both moved around Short for the second and third spots respectively. Chase Stockon, the current USAC and MSCS points leader got around Short for fourth on lap 24. Stanbrough and Stockon both got around Hines for second and third, putting Hines back to fourth. Up front however it was all Clauson as he took the checkers in his Bryan Clauson Racing, Priority Aviation Services, Jonathan Byrds Racing, Al Parker Powered, Maxim Chassis, rounding out the top five were Stanbrough, Stockon, Hines, and Bacon.

USAC/MSCS Heat winners were Brady Bacon, Dave Darland, Chase Stockon, and Shane Cockrum. The B-Main winner was Kevin Thomas, Jr. Fast qualifier of the evening was Bacon.

Re: Bloomington USAC/MSCS Updates

Bloomington, Indiana…….Bryan Clauson came back to Bloomington Speedway, one of his early-career regular stops, to take his first AMSOIL Sprint Car victory of the season on Friday night in an event co-sanctioned by the Midwest Sprint Car Series. The Noblesville, Indiana driver made it 32 career wins in the series, tying him for 11th all-time with Rollie Beale. The victory came back aboard the Bryan Clauson Racing entry after two years driving for Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing.

It did not come easily, as the 25-year old nearly gave it away on the final lap as he slipped over the banking in turn-two and clawed his way back onto the track as he got to turn-three. Luckily, he had established a large advantage and held on for the win in the Priority Aviation – Jonathan Byrd’s Racing #7 Maxim/Parker.

“Fortunately we built that big lead to hold on when I drove over the end. I hadn’t even seen the white flag. It would have been pretty embarrassing to lose it that way. I did a quick scan and realized we were still leading and the checkered was right there. Our car was really able to work anywhere I put it. We got a little help from Bob (East), and we made some changes from there. It was fun to win again in our own car and win a race with my dad (Tim). I’m not gonna run quite as many shows this year, but I love winning these USAC races and was happy to get this one,” Clauson said.

Clauson came from row-three to track down early leader Carson Short, who had opened up a comfortable advantage after a lap-two caution. Clauson used a turn-one slidejob on lap thirteen to take command, quickly opening up a lead as he worked traffic and Short fell into the clutches of a hellacious battle for second through fifth.

Jon Stanbrough worked past Short and Tracy Hines to take over the second spot, eventually notching the best finish of the season for his newly-started Jon Stanbrough Racing MP Environmental Services – AED Motorsports Products #81 Spike/J&D.

“Tonight makes it worthwhile to put in the time and work to piece this team together and try to improve our program each race. We work really well together. I had to go through the middle once, and my car stuck pretty well through there. Our car was really good tonight, and I could kinda go wherever I needed. We’ve gotten better week by week, but tomorrow is a new night,” Stanbrough said.

From row-six, National point leader Chase Stockon was on a charge and sliced his way through the pack fighting for third to round out the podium in the Superior Tank & Trailer – Crescent Electric Supply #32 DRC/Fisher. For his efforts, Stockon earned the B&W Auto Mart “Hard Charger Award.”

“We have been starting pretty far towards the front lately, and I didn’t really see us being able to drive through there like that tonight. (Crew chief) D.J. (Ott) gave me a really good car tonight, and we could work traffic and pick some guys off as they were hanging coming off the corner. I was trying to pay attention to the cushion and see if I could stick to the bottom when it got tougher to run up high. I stuck to my guns down lower and tried to perfect that line,” Stockon said.

Hines slipped to fourth in the final rundown aboard his The Carolina Nut Company – Hansen’s Welding #4 DRC/Stanton Chevy, and the night’s ProSource “Fast Qualifier” Brady Bacon worked into the top-five at the finish. Short wound up sixth.

New class was a little slow for hot laps but when the heats started couple cars got on the gas and wasn't to bad. Couldn't tell ya about feature had hour40 minute drive home so left after 410's. HUGE!!! Shout out to the track crew tonight. Been going to Bloomington over the last 10 years and to my memory that's the best the track has held up throughout qualifing that I can remember. Great racing throughout the night tonight as even for the feature there were a handful of guys that passed 6 to 8 cars. Great evening Bloomington Speedway!

Despite only 10 Wing cars showing up, there is a lot of potential for the 305 series in my opinion. There's still a huge need for track time as everyone fought with their cars all night long. Handling and adjustments will obviously be learned with time. Same with some of the rookies and newbies to sprints or higher-horse-powered cars. Once they can get a feel for things, there'll be a lot more closer competition and perhaps even interest as things move along.

On a side note, Tusing and Fleetwood put on a heck of a show in their heat race. And Luke Bland (yes, the defending Hornet Track Champion) showed he wasn't scared of his new ride either.
At the moment it's easy to tell who has experience in a sprint car period. (And easy to tell with some of the names) But I think with time there is still room for this series to grow.
It'll also greatly help if a track like Lincoln Park will consider running them too someday. With at least 2 local tracks to run at, it'll justify the series a bit more much like many other series have 2-3 tracks they can run at every weekend. Also once a weekly-to-run cost is more widely known it could also help draw more cars later in the year or into next year.

Ryan did say in Victory Lane that the cars are fun to drive and do handle way different than a 410-NW. And that he had to forget everything he learned driving sprints and start over to even get a better handle on these things. Not a word-for-word quote, but that's the gist of his opinion.

I do expect car counts to stay low for most of the year, but i think it'll still be interesting to see these drivers get better with seat-time. Also, thinking back to when Bloomington started the Hornet class, the first year they only drew in maybe a dozen cars a night. But as the year went on and then into the following two seasons, they were drawing 30-40 of them every week. No, the Racesavers won't grow that big that fast, but with support I can see around 12-16 by end of season and 20-22 of them running in the 2016 Season. And again, if another track joins in on running them there could be a small boost to those numbers. Who knows, anything is possible. Let's see how things go in the next few weeks.

Rpracing1 4/18/15 12:56 AM

They had a guy from Knoxville Tn I think I heard. Seems like a long way to travel to run that car?? Or was I hearing things.

I think he's from Knoxville, IA actually BUT he works for the Tennessee Vols Marching Band as their Director.

That's funny right there. Who would of thought a marching band director in a sprint car?

Thought the same thing when I heard it. Very odd connection there, but then again look where he's from.

Re: Bloomington USAC/MSCS Updates

The racing was good all night. The wing cars show lots of potential and I for one hope it takes off to offer some alternative to the racers that are looking for a chance to do it.

I think I was most impressed by Luke Bland for it being his first actual "race" in the car. He stormed off like a veteran but it was his handling his mistakes like that veteran that was most impressive.

Jerry Shaw 4/18/15 8:37 AM

Re: Bloomington USAC/MSCS Updates

One quality that's always stood out with Bryan Clauson is his ability to be so aggressive, yet be so patient at the same time. IMO, it's one of the things that's made him a great driver and not merely just another really good one. Tonight was another example of that. He just hung out and bided his time for the first ten laps or so and then when it was "time", just went right through the top 5 and drove away as easily as he was driving down the street to pick up a loaf of bread. He made it look that easy. It's not surprising that he looked that good at this track, as this is where he cut his racing teeth at. Bloomington regulars all remember a 15 year old kid showing up every week and being the strongest challenger to the resident force of nature, known as Kevin Briscoe. Jon Stanbrough put in quite an effort last night, too. It was more of a "grind it out" kind of effort, wrestling positions away from tough drivers until he had put himself in the runnerup spot. And as he was doing that, at the end of the race, he was fending off race "Hard Charger" Chase Stockon, who had came from mid pack and damn near stole second away from Jon on several occasions. It was a great night on the hill, looking at the red clay. The feature was very good and included at least three very impressive drives, from three of the best out there.

Jerry

Rpracing1 4/18/15 9:52 AM

March Band pretty cool...✔️

cmiracingvids 4/18/15 11:21 AM

Glad to see Stanbrough finish 2nd. In his post race interview he eluded to how difficult it is to balance owning your own car, business and the everyday challenges of life and still put forth an effort worthy of calling it your own, or your best. I have a ton of respect for Jon and I'm really becoming a huge fan, and it was really good to see him do well last night. He drove the wheels off in his heat race and did the same in the feature. Clauson was clearly the best though. Best of luck to Jon and the rest of the drivers tonight at TSS.

Oh! And the track was just about perfect. Great job to Bloomingtons track prep crew. Just a little soft spot in turn 3 that unfortunately bit Bland and Clayton enough to end their nights.
I actually enjoyed the 305s. They looked fast and it's a nice treat to see non wing AND winged on the same track.
