Silver Crown Technical Update
USAC TECHNICAL UPDATE - TB2015-SC001
SILVER CROWN SERIES Date: April 9, 2015 Date Effective: April 9, 2015 TITLE: Tires Dirt Hoosier tires are the only approved rear tires for competition in 2015. Specific compounds for each event can be found on the entry form of the event. Any team that attempts to qualify for the Hoosier Hundred on May 21st at The Indiana State Fairgrounds will receive two right rear Hoosier tires at no charge. Beginning with the September 6th event at The DuQuoin State Fairgrounds competitors must utilize Hoosier tires on all four corners of the car. Pavement Tires will no longer be impounded by Hoosier or USAC prior to the events. |
That just made it more expensive.
|
Except the price of the tires went down as well.

Re: Silver Crown Technical Update
Guess Hoosier didn't like Swanson winning the Championship on American Racers!
|
If you can't beat 'em....get 'em outlawed! Btw how much are the new Hoosiers anyway?
|
Re: Silver Crown Technical Update
Well, I remember Andy Hillenburg asking for suggestions on what to do to help the Silver Crown series. I said give everyone a year heads up on rule changes. I see USAC is back to their old self again.
Also , Hoosier couldn't beat American Racer on a mile if it had to. They tried everything to improve their tires and couldn't do it. Just think, they don't even have to try to improve their product anymore.Just keep making the stuff that didn't work before. Also , thank you to American Racer, you always treated us well when we used your tires, and you always gave us a better product then the guys in purple. |
Another decision made by USAC to benefit themselves instead of the teams that support usac. Get rid of a better product with a better price. Still self serving like usual.
|
Beginning to look like an antitrust case is needed against Hoosier. Seems the pretty much have a monopoly going across the board in open wheel short track racing.
|
Uggghhhh. Every major series has a tire rule. Why people get upset with this is beyond me. If AR wanted to be the official tire of USAC, they could do it. Just win the business the next time it goes to bid.

AR had won the business. Springfield , Hoosier Hundred, just to name two. They're less expensive and perform better. This I know, I've used them. Sometimes you just can't beat ********, and we all know there are no ******** in USAC, don't we. |

We raced IMCA Sprints with both the A/R "Hockey Puck" and it's Hoosier replacement. The A/R held up better, refired better and had superior hot & cold traction than the IMCA Hoosier. |
Re: Silver Crown Technical Update
By USAC ruling in favor for only Hoosier Tire, maybe this is how they are paying for Davey Hamilton's salary?
|
I really don't understand everyone's comments. I'm not for either side. I run American Racers in NZ. We ran American Racers on some of the miles last year. Hoosier has helped me for many years as well. USAC, like almost every other sanctioning body, wants to have a tire rule. In order to have one, the tire manufacturers have to supply both dirt and pavement. Not just the dirt. From what I understand, both tire companies made a proposal. AR was not ready with a pavement tire. The 2 companies were within $2 of tire price. I realize all of the facts weren't given to the general race fans/public. Please realize there is usually more information that the powers that be have that you don't. There are plenty of sanctioning bodies out there that have AR tire rules. I guess I'm getting more sarcastic in my old age but if you don't want to watch cars go around on Hoosiers and support the best open wheel racing around, then go catch some modified races. Rant over. Goodnight.

Re: Silver Crown Technical Update
Wow i guess thats just the way it is then ...
|
Re: Silver Crown Technical Update
The problem I have with it is that OK, AR doesn't have a pavement tire.
It still hurts someone that has a AR sponsorship, Hoosier going to take that over when it becomes illegal to run AR tires anywhere on the car even on dirt? Thats the thing that helps get racers to a track. Whats next, You gotta run ACME shocks and Widget bars and a XYZ Chassis? |
Re: Silver Crown Technical Update
Now days we don't always build a better mouse trap,we just cage the mouse and say it was ours all along.
|
Re: Silver Crown Technical Update
And from the first time a car horse met a car. Racing has always been about competition. The competition should be on the track, Not in a bank account.
|
So Coondog, how much is the Hoosier? I paid only $165 for American Racers from Tony Rose who also helped me with set ups. The Hoosier guy was an a$$. You also failed to answer why USAC had to do this. Obviously, sanctioning bodies do this to line their pockets. I ran 2 races on one set of American Racer fronts and they still had life. Hoosiers were junk after one. They always are.
|
Well they probably "had" to do it, or risk losing the money Hoosier brought to the table, which I am sure is a substantial portion of the crown purses and/or point fund. In return hoosier is giving competitors 2 free rears. I also believe they agreed to sell the tires at basically the same price of an American Racer, but don't qoute me on that. So either run Hoosiers or don't race, that's the choice. I think most would rather race and have respectable purses than trying to squeeze a second race on a front tire. Most series have a 4 corner rule, it is nothing new. I don't know what people expect honestly. It's not like sponsors are jumping to throw money into a silver crown race or any race for that matter. They are going to take money from wherever they can, and if that means everyone has to run the same tire so be it. Everyone would complain if they cut purses in half so it's lose lose.

Re: Silver Crown Technical Update
Thanks Coondog for coming on here with some of the facts. You have gained my respect over and over this winter (and spring), just simply by explaining your view on the way things really are.
|
Re: Silver Crown Technical Update
Well said Coondog! If you don't like it , go somewhere else. Every sport has rules and this is another one to follow.
|
Folks, theres always going to be something to be unhappy about. I personally know people on both sides and understand both arguments but it came to a conclusion and was settled by the rule makers, concessions were made, lets not carry this so far to create a major negative before the season starts, lets just go race, the cream will still rise, the best man will still win and everyone will do it with the same tire. Plenty of other choices an owner can make such as the important things we seem to forget like CHASSIS, MOTORS, SHOCKS,SETUP. LETS GO RACE!

Re: Silver Crown Technical Update
I am tired of this tire argument. Rule makers know what's best for us all. Just look around the country, if it wasn't for the rule makers this country wouldn't be in such great shape. So we need to remember that in the long run rule makers know best.
