DILLON BUHR SCORES NIGHT #1 WIN AT GATOR DIRT NATIONALS
By Zach Tasker

The first night of the 2015 Gator Dirt Nationals at the North Florida Speedway in Lake City, Florida had an upset winner as Dillon Buhr held off all the northern invaders and made sure that at least for one night the trophy stayed in the home state of the Southern States Midget Series. Buhr started on the outside of the front row for the 20 lap feature. He got the jump on pole sitter Adam Pierson and held control for the rest of the race. There were multiple late-race restarts where he had to hold off the 2014 USAC DMA and Lucas Oil Powri Outlaw Midget Series champion Pierson. The Jacksonville native also made some dramatic passes through lapped traffic to take his biggest career win.

“We started on the outside pole with a 21 car field and I led from the start. I thought he was going to hang with me on the inside for a while because the track was so slick, but we were able to run out front for most of the time. We had a couple of cautions, and then the car started cutting out a little bit in the last five laps, but we had some lapped traffic and got by them pretty easily. We had a lapped car at the end that hit the wall, and them came across the track and I about creamed him going into turn 3 coming to the checkered flag. I just told myself to hold on; if I hit him I hit him. I was already committed to the line, as soon as I set it into the corner I saw him come across, and I thought oh my god. "

The driver of the #24 Super Shox/MWR/Atlantic Powder Coating/Denton Motorsports Eagle/Ecotec is hoping to capitalize on this win for the next two nights of racing. “It feels great. I thought that coming off of winning the heat race was an accomplishment in itself with these guys down here but a feature, I couldn’t ask for more than this right here. I hope we can continue this tomorrow night and Saturday night. ”

2nd place Adam Pierson tried to throw the kitchen sink at Buhr the last few laps but couldn’t mount a challenge to try to get a run on him. “Every time we would restart he just would get me on that jump. The way our motors are with the cam, it just doesn't come off the corner like that one would. I was trying to time it right so I could keep the motor up and keep with him but he just jumped me every time. I think we were pretty even except he was getting me from the center off the corner but for the first time being here coming from Vermont I'll take it a second spot is definitely a good starting spot for this weekend.”

The driver of the #76m Blackwatch Farms/Brad Noffsinger Racing Acadamy/BMRS Brown & Miller Racing Solutions Spike/Focus out of East Corinth, Vermont thinks just some small tweaks will put him in the front tomorrow night. “We just need to do a little research on the tires and the rear suspension stuff to make it not dig so hard and not wear the tire out basically.”

Rounding out the podium was the #7 Ellis/Ecotec driven by Seth Carlson out of Brimfield, Massachusetts. The winner of a 2014 NEMA midget race at Oswego Speedway was surprised by his pace. “We are still new to this, we haven’t been to many tracks and I haven’t been driving dirt for that long. We got the car going pretty good for the feature, and hopefully we will get it better for tomorrow. We were right there, I was trying a couple of different lines to see if I could reel them in at the end and I fell back a little bit but with a couple of adjustments on the car I think we will be alright. “

A strong field of 21 D2 midgets from across the nation were on hand at the 3/8 mile dirt oval. Pierson, Buhr and Josh Sunn were heat race winners. Racing continues on Friday night with a full show including the special invitational race of champions and the Gator Dirt Nationals finale on Saturday.

FEATURE RESULTS (20 LAPS): 1)#24 Dillon Buhr 2)#76m Adam Pierson 3)#7 Seth Carlson 4) Josh Sunn 5)#0 Daniel Robinson 6)#33 Tim Gallant 7)#10b Patrick Bruns 8)#47 Scott Holcomb 9)#45 Brandon Denton 10)#4 Lance Newton 11)#49 Scott Anderson 12)#1 Bradley Mcdaniel 13)#30 Terry Becker 14)#10C Jimmy Clark Jr. 15)#51 Clayton Mullett 16)#20x Jeff Hafeke Jr. 17)#11c Chett Gehrke 18)#6 Franke Malec 19)#92 Darrin Davis 20)#29 Anthony Nocella 21)#46d Andy Barrows

What happened to the 50 plus cars?
It appears that the 1000 cc cars were not even competitive whats your take.

It was 1 hell'va show put on by all 21 that showed up

the old saying goes you can lead a horse to water but you can't make'm drink... had 52 comments and not quite 1/2 showed up including 5 local racers for 1 reason or another...The ones that did told me they had a BLAST on the track...

Thanks to all that came and raced on to tonight. Hoping for another 73* day but one of you guys up there opened a window and it's going be cold...like 65...but nothing but BLUE shies for the next 5 days....

Enjoy the snow!!!:22:

I'm sure a few more people will show up today/tomorrow. either way it was a good race..... Nfs needs to put some work in on the track, it was DUSTY.... I could t even see the front stretch wall most of the race, driving by Braille was interesting haha. I had a ton of fun though , anyone who didn't come down is missing out!

zeromotorsports 2/13/15 10:01 AM

Not sure where you're getting that 73 degrees. Weather.com calls for a high of 54 today, 61 on Saturday and 55 on Sunday. It's unseasonably cold this year in Florida.

^the weatherman ain't always right. Lol. it was in the 70s most of the day yesterday

Same place he's getting 50 cars. Sorry, i know you worked hard on this thing, but fact is, over-selling does nobody any good. I've been told that some of those people on your list of entries, have never even spoken to you? Same person also told me that he did speak with you, but never comitted to anything, yet you still put his name on the list?

There was a reason you did not update anything after the entry deadline of January 28th????
Again, it's obvious you put a ton of effort into this, but telling people just a couple weeks ago that you would have 50 cars, when your entry stack most likely didn't reach half that is just plain wrong.

I don't doubt 21 cars put on a great show, and hopefully this race can grow into something more. But misleading people doesn't help a thing now, or in the future.

You sound just like a promoter to me. That is a good thing. Keep working on that half full side of the gas tank. I sure wish their would have been some competitive chain drive cars show up down there to offer the shaft drive people a little competition.

But the cold hard northern fact of the matter is most of the racers that you are catering to just don't have the time or money to invest in a week long "Racing Junket".:)

I guess the shaft drive racers still don't want to race with the chain drive bunch at Du Quoin this up coming March 15th so I guess we will stay home and work on something else.

It seems to me that we are more than competitive with them but I guess they have their reasons for not wanting to include us.:7:

Have YOU ever promoted a race before?

If not YOU have not idea the amount of time, money and effort that goes into doing this......EVERYONE on that list including 5 local racers was going to TRY and make it.....12 of those racers called me and said they were not gonna make it....

I am 1 person without any help and try the best I can along with 2 cars to rebuild in 8 weeks...but that is NO EXCUSE...and I will go no further than that cause I KNOW I did the best I could do....

Dont know ya crank but would love to have YOU promote a race....thanks for the encouragement

Those running on half empty make it harder for the rest of the people.

I probably shouldn't be the one saying this BUT!!
Money and Hard Work>>Talks>> Bull Sh1t just walks.

I appreciate all your efforts Wayne. 20 cars or 50 cars the people that are here are loving it and it's been some good racing thus far. don't let anyone bring you down as you've done a damn good job promoting this race and put on a great show last night.

Crankin 2/13/15 1:11 PM

Spin it how you wish, it doesn't change the facts that you oversold it. What ive done, or can/cannot do, is irrelevant.
If i loaded up the camper to leave a week early before the usac show, just to go see a really big 50 car midget show, i would be pretty pissed off!
Never questioned your effort, never questioned your intent, never questioned your promoting skills. Didn't want to get in a pissing match either.
All that aside, when you have a paid pre-entry, WITH a deadline, you already have a general idea what the car count is going to be. Yet, according to you, you went off a bunch of verbals?? For someone who claims to be at this his whole life, you advertise verbal commitments as entered?
Maybe i should have waited until after saturday to bring this up? But it was obvious what was going to happen.
I have wished you sucess from the begining, and wish the best for this event in the future.
Just please be more straight up about things, and you'll be the hero you want to be!

And how many other promoters or tracks have published a list of cars and drivers they were expecting for their Florida race?:) >>>>>>>>Car and driver counts and weather conditions are kind of a no-no in the promoter's hand book.:5:

Only count on the ones you are paying to show up and you had better be paying them awfully good>

You guys need to ease up on ol Wayne. There were several cars that backed out that said they were going. We originally were taking 4 cars, but sold 1 and the other needed a motor
Shane Morgan was going to bring 2 cars
Matt Schuck had to cancel
Several cars from KC backed out last min.
I think the show was sold just right.
Craig you of all people know the struggles.

Crankin 2/13/15 2:17 PM

I know. I know. Don't speak your mind. Don't cause a scene. Don't stir the pot. Never call a spade a spade. Remain PC.
I dont know how many different ways i gotta say it: I AM SUPPORTIVE OF WHAT WAYNE HAS DONE! Is that clear enough?

I am not supportive of disapointing fans (current ones or new ones), with something that was obvious for a while now, but still sold as such.

Midget racing as a whole does not need anyone disapointed. As mentioned, i have no problem with 21 cars, but some guy who spent $ to come down there early for this first of its kind event with 50 cars. Well, that guy might have a problem with the advertising.
Or the guy who was thrilled about the live Online PPV announcement, before it was even checked if a broadcast was feasible from that location?
You can go on and on about who called in sick, as even those #'s dont even reach 40. An entry is not an entry until the $ is in hand, and there is nothing uncommon about that!

All im asking is that next year, get a few more P's and Q's in order.
Midget racing needs this, and we should all do things as right as possible to help it grow.

Wayne Davis 2/13/15 3:10 PM

Xsan said after Sundays race on Monday Feb. 9 and with East Bay rained out with the conecction issues that they might not make tonight and them not having enough people for 3 tracks BRP-EBRP-NFS....Xsan was going to broadcast 13-14 Fri. Sat shows only....out of my control....sames as the 15 racers that text me about not making it this weekend

I guess I am starting to feel just a little on how it is to be non-white, or in my case non drive shaft. We live in a world with a very narrow and focused view on life. We are segregated because of our drive system (give me a break), and perhaps just a little on the fact that we might out perform a few back markers. I make no claims to Mega Horsepower, I do claim that if the track is small enough we can give a Midget a race for its money.

I have made my last post about Du Quoin (Thank God Amen said the Congregation). They can race for whatever they want.

Wayne on the other hand has stuck his neck out to even include some of the older Midgets to give them a race to race in where they can be competitive.

IS ANYBODY TAKING NOTES??? Racing out front is too expensive now days, car counts are falling or never even getting off of the ground. When you tell me I have to buy a $12,000.00 motor for my young driver to just start to race with you "We have a problem Huston".

I am probably as old as you are. Until I was 60 or so I was into the "PC CRAP". That stuff just doesn't work, it was designed by the so called "PROGRESSIVE PEOPLE" to silent the majority and make them feel guilty about what they say, or think or how they act. Well>>" I decided that enough was enough and if the pot is BLACK I am damned well going to call it BLACK.

Re: Dillon Buhr scores night #1 win at Gator Dirt Nationals

ILSS has a $2,000 to win race DURING race season in the MIDWEST and they won't have 40 cars. I'd actually be impressed with 30. I'm also not surprised that some Midwest drivers aren't coming because most never have and most won't travel more than 4 hours as it is. You can't be mad when these guys don't show up.

I'm hoping the best for your event, but I think 50 was a little too optimistic. As Craig said, luckily this wasn't a "primetime" event that people were heading to so they could see 50 cars. You're doing a great thing in running a race in February around all the big time Florida events already taking place. But take what you can get when guys are trying to get their stuff ready for April.

cbaumeyer48 2/13/15 4:30 PM

I was trying to make those neat little yellow guys.... Those things are so cool! Obviously that one didn't work!..... Is there one that looks like like a rocker banging his head?
