Where to move in Indiana/Ohio?

I took a job and will have to be based in the Midwest area including Illinois Ohio Indiana Kentucky Michigan and Wisconsin. My wife and I have narrowed it down to Indiana due to taxes being the best there but wanted to get some opinions as to where to live. We like to have land and have a 3 month old.

Re: Where to move in Indiana/Ohio?

We were actually considering doing the same not that long ago. We had narrowed our focus on the Carmel / Noblesville, In area... Very nice area, situated nicely amongst race tracks.

treecitytornado 1/27/15 11:09 PM

Greensburg, Indiana is a great place with a ton of friendly people that care, affordable living, plenty of jobs, and much more!

Re: Where to move in Indiana/Ohio?

Depends how much $ you have to spend, the north side of Indy(Carmel, Noblesville, Zionsville, Fishers) is a little pricier. I live west, try looking at Avon, Plainfield or Brownsburg. Nice areas but a little more reasonable prices. Greenwood to the south isnt bad either. I am within 1.5 hrs of 5 sprint car tracks and add another hr to that to get to Eldora or Haubstadt. Cant beat it.

PatrickMead#13 1/28/15 1:53 AM

Not knowing your whole situation, but lake St. Mary's is coming back strong and land prices are very good. Besides, you're in Ohio sprint car country in that area and Indy state line is about 20 minutes away. Beautiful area up there.

I am about a year away from moving to Indiana from CA. I have been looking in the Noblesville, Cicero, Sheridan area's, but I'm looking for 20+ acres to build a home and race shop.

flagboy55 1/28/15 2:40 AM

I would recommend some place with in a 15 or 20 minute ride from kokomo speedway. You got the best weekly show in the country, great national events, and only a couple hours away from so many other outstanding tracks. When life gets in the way of racing, you know you always have the Sunday night sprint car race at kms to enjoy and not take up your whole day or night

If you are looking in those areas,I would look a little farther north into the Tipton and kokomo areas. Plenty of rural areas with lower taxes and probably a little cheaper acreage. Just a thought.

Yeah I'd agree on that as well, Sheridan may be a little cheaper but Cicero and noblesville are expensive areas. Cicero because of the lake and noblesville because it being close to Indy. Tipton county area has a lot of land

Not sure if you want bigger city or smaller area but I live in Northwest Ohio, Bryan OH, town of 9000 I am 20 mins from IN and MI state lines, 9 miles off turnpike (80-90) and not far from 24, 69, 75, all 4 lane hi-ways. Within 3 hours of my house, if you drive like me, You can hit over 50 different tracks, different race tracks between Ohio, IN, and MI. I've always thought about other areas, like Indy but, this area if you like to travel is pretty tough to beat if you like hitting different tracks.

Re: Where to move in Indiana/Ohio?

I remarried and moved from N. Indiana to Crawfordsville, IN. Nice little town. I too travel for work and need an airport within an hour. C-ville has what is needed....an hour to Indy airport...an hour to downtown Indy...Kentucky (Louisville) is 2.5hrs...Illinois (Champaign) is 1.5hrs....Chicago 2.5hrs....Michigan border 3hrs...
C-ville has 2 highways to access (74 East/West and 65 North/South). The countryside in and around C-ville is hilly and rolling mostly, not the typical flatness of most of Indiana and large acres of land can be purchased fairly cheap. And that land will have some interesting terrain.

As far as racetracks....Ben Hur (go-karts) in town, Lincoln Park (30 mins), Kokomo (1hr 15mins), Bloomington (1.5 hrs), Daugherty (1hr), US 24 (1hr 15mins), Miami County (1.5 hrs), Terre Haute (1.5hrs), Vermillion if it ever races again (1hr), Brownstown (2 hrs.), Plymouth (2.5hrs), Indianapolis Motor Speedway (45 mins), Lucas Oil Raceway (45 mins), Indy Speedrome (1hr.)....

There is, for me, no other Columbus but here in Indiana.

Great small city, growing at a modest rate.

Halfway between Eldora and Haubstadt. Less than a 3 hour drive.

Franklin, Shelbyville, Columbus area, south of Indy about 20 mins, close to all the big events

Hustler 1/28/15 1:40 PM

I've looked into Carmel and Noblesville but the living is high there and not much for space. I've been looking a lot down by the OH IN and KY border but in Indiana. Small town called Lexington IN has caught my eye. It's close to Lousville for airports. i haven't found much around Kokomo, and that was the first place I checked due to the track lol. I have also looked at West Indy and it seems more reasonable.
I have a mini sprint and a dwarf car that I will be racing. Going to try and sell my dwarf before I leave cause there's not much for racing them over there and plus, Ive been wanting a midget forever. Now I'm moving to the serious open wheel country and might as well.
I appreciate all of your input.

If you like miserable cold and 90 day summer come to Wisconsin

Re: Where to move in Indiana/Ohio?

Lived in Evansville all my life and I love it! Weather is generally better down here during the winter than upstate; less than half-hour from Haubstadt, but you will have to drive at least two hours to get to most of the other tracks in Indiana. I69 has cut the drive to Bloomington down to about an hour and forty-five minutes. Cost of living is generally a little lower here, too. Pretty good access to southern Illinois racetracks via I64.
I do envy the guys in central Indiana because of all the race tracks that are in close proximity!

Indys West side is the place to be. Plenty of race places around for parts repair etc, easy access to the interstates, and most importantly,3 1/2 hrs to the best midget track there is: Belle-Clair Speedway,Belleville,Illinois......

Re: Where to move in Indiana/Ohio?

Gas City. Move there. Buy the track. Run it for the next 30 years. Let the fans in cheap and provide great racing.

Okay.... maybe I am a little selfish...... :11:

If you already have a Mini Sprint (assuming it's an upright) and you want to go Midget racing find a place reasonably close to Montpelier; you can race your car in the Montpelier Midget Series and upgrade to a full-up shaft-drive automotive-powered version at a later date if you desire, or stick with the chain and have a ton of fun. I chose where I live for the opportunity to buy a house for cash and proximity to IMS, but if I had it to do over again might choose Noblesville and surrounding areas because of where I ended up racing.

TQ29m 1/28/15 7:28 PM

Just for giggles and grins, ck the Seymour, In area, close to a lot of tracks! Bob

I live in a little town of Osgood indiana. I call it o so good . You can pick and choose what track you want to go to and if the weather is bad down south you can hit any other tracks in a notice. Welcome to the racing capital of the world.

Check Madison Country.. thirty to 40 min north east of Indy. Pendleton, Lapel, Anderson area. Good tax rates.. Land can range from $ 7 to $9 thousand an Ac. And yes, there is a lot of corn in Indiana, along with good race tracks and friendly people.:6:

JstAbvVMC 1/29/15 12:43 AM

Thanks guys, Ya I've been looking as far north as Kokomo. Issue #2 is I want to be reasonably close to some decent golf courses. It's a retirement thing. Race shop for the boy and golf courses nearby so I don't have to help load the trailer !! Lol

treecitytornado 1/29/15 1:40 AM

Speaking of Osgood that brings back great memories of making history with Mr. Terry Eaglin and helping to promote a Sprint Car race at the Ripley County oval! Fun track to race in a Sprint, T.Q., Kenyon Midget, Micro-Sprint, Go-Kart, or whatever!!

Headed to look at a few houses this week. They are all over the place. A few outside Brownstown, one in greenfield and one outside Terre Haute. Thanks for all the input.

Don't count out Ripley county in Indiana. Very quiet community with in a skip hop and jump to cincinnati and Indianapolis airports and all the great racing in the midwest. Good luck in your choice.
