I'm not a schatz fan

That being said, what he is doing to this star studded field of outlaws is flat out amazing!!! Just got done watching him absolutely dominate the race at terre haute. I'm glad I can say that I got to see it. Even though I'm not a schatz fan . And for those of you that boo him..... You are idiots

flatout 9/18/14 12:12 AM

He is the dominant driver of his generation and he's earned it.

Rpracing1 9/18/14 12:20 AM

He and his car in another class.

openwheelfan1 9/18/14 12:27 AM

During the dash, UNOFFICIALLY, Schatz was running under the 15 yr. old lap record. He ran 6 consecutive laps between 16.45x and 16.70x seconds. Joey Saldana who had the pole and finished second in the dash ran one lap under 17 seconds. In the feature, Schatz was 0.2- 0.4 seconds /lap better than anyone else on the track. I'm not a Schatz fan either, but you have to respect a driver and team that can be that far up on their competition! Impressive performance!

We love all open wheel racing, but all you can do with Schatz is tip your hat.

dirt in ur beer 9/18/14 1:01 AM

I've heard so many people say " you're never gonna see Anyone dominate the way Steve and SAMMY did cause the equipment is too even nowadays ". Well the level of competition is WAY up from then, so I think one could make the comparison .

flagboy55 9/18/14 1:08 AM

I would say Wolfgang was pretty dominant as well, but i agree, not really sure why I'm not a fan but he's got it going for sure! Hat tipped.

His crew chief must be the next Karl Kinser as well.

Right now Donny does not have anyone who is his match except Daryn pittman maybe.

Little known fact.......sign painter turned great sprint car mechanic from Carlisle, PA, Ricky Werner, was mentored by Karl for a few years. As was Kale Kahne. I guess Karl never quit winning WoO titles when you look at it this way.

It's hard to believe that its been 14 hr's and 11 posts on this winged sprint thread and no negative remarks posted (yet). Maybe the non wing only crowd has noticed the large turnout of racers & fans at these events and recognized the existing support of winged sprints and have chosen to accept, or just ignore it, I hope that's the case.

It's good to see threads of all types of open wheel, sprints & other racers supported on the IOW. we need them all.

There have been 22 different WoO winners so far this season. Schatz has won 22 of the 82 races or almost 27%. He has certainly been dominant but 60 nights someone has been his match.

So how many people have won more than 22?

None, but on 60 nights he was matched.

He has 9 more wins and 13 more top 5s than the next guy.
If you add the next 3 guys they've only won 2 more than Donnie himself.
We r splitting hairs here. The way he's going the number of wins is going to b even higher. (Already north of 25%)
Don't know why I'm pleading his case I'm not even a schatz fan!

It's not like the year ('87 I believe)Kinser won 46 out of 69 a-mains!

dirt in ur beer 9/18/14 8:46 PM

That's the # I was looking for. That's ABSOLUTE domination. But I still believe it's kinda "apples n oranges"

I don't know how old you guys are or what, But if you had seen Steve and Karl in their prime. You'd know its no contest. Theres a reason he's the KING. He'd start tail of a heat and be in the lead before the back straight.

Great setup and sheer determination.
And the competition in those days was every bit as tough.

Donnie no doubt is great, He deserves the praise, But to compare him to Best of all time, Wing or not Kinser isn't even fair.

This is the truest statement on here. I was a Sammy fan but, no one could compete fully with Steve night in and night out on EVERY track.

And Kinser 46 Wins did not count the first night(was called a prelim night) of a 2 day show. Schatz win total counts a first night win, of a 2 day show..

Schatz is very good today, but he needs to win another 200 features before he will be half as good as Steve, and another 100 as Sammy. He might be a little above Mark Kinser now. But way above Mr. Litigation Wolfgang. But many don't pay attention to facts.

Eldora Earl said, the best race he ever saw at Eldora was a USAC show when Steve. started last in the Jonny Vance Car, Jim (Macqueen) , wrenching and won.

What year was that? Trying to jog my memory. Might have had a beer or 2 since then.:32:

Re: I'm not a schatz fan

Steve, Sammy and Doug got a lot of their wins when their cars were superior to the competition. If any of them started last in a heat race they were probably going to win it. That doesn't happen much today if at all. Obviously, Donnie needs to win more to be up with the big boys but his Nationals record is already astounding and he's pounding on some really good cars. It's not just Donnie but his crew chief and the whole team. Steve wouldn't have been Steve without Karl Kinser working magic every night and Gerkin learned from Karl. I'm not big on Schatz myself but seeing is believing and he seems to have the same desire to win like Steve and Sammy.

dirt in ur beer 9/19/14 1:13 AM

Check my posts .... I never put schatz on the same level as The King. That would b blasphemy .

Sorry, I was responding to Kinser 11.

dsc1600 9/19/14 3:25 AM

With all due respect, competition was not as good in 87 as it is now. Locals have much more equal equipment than they did back then. I'm not saying Schatz is the equal of Kinser by any stretch, but what the 15 team is doing is pretty remarkable.

I have to give a shout-out to Lasoski as well. He and Forbrook would show up on occasion in the old days and he had some very impressive runs against the top dogs way before he drove for Tony Stewart.

The selection of photos shown here illustrates two things: Sprint cars haven’t changed a whole lot conceptually, and Kinser has been winning for a very long time. One image shows him with the legendary, now-retired Eldora promoter Earl Baltes, at whose track Kinser made history. Just as an example, in the 1980s he arrived late there to drive Johnny Vance’s USAC Sprint car. Never took a time trial lap. Started the feature dead last, with zero practice time, and still won. That’s Klassic Kinser. - See more at: http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2....cfmQoU76.dpuf
