Racing returns to Magic Mile

Auto racing returns to Magic Mile in DuQuoin for USAC-ARCA doubleheader on Aug. 31, Sept. 1

DUQUOIN, Ill. – A race car driver still building his reputation and another driver who is a household name among race fans are the defending champions as exciting auto racing returns to the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds with a pair of 100-mile races on Sunday, Aug. 31 and Monday, Sept. 1, the final two days of the DuQuoin State Fair. Chris Urish, of Elkhart, Ill., was the winner of the unpredictable Ted Horn 100 for USAC Silver Crown cars that races again Aug. 31 before NASCAR star Ken Schrader chases another victory on the legendary DuQuoin Mile in the Southern Illinois 100 as ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards hits the dirt with the stock cars for only the second time all season on Sept. 1. The traditional racing program provides a great contrast for race fans who can watch both open-wheel racing and full body stock cars.“We always look forward to bringing the excitement of big-time auto racing to the DuQuoin State Fair,’’ said veteran race promoter Bob Sargent, who also holds USAC and ARCA races at the Illinois State Fair and Indiana State Fairgrounds. “A fairgrounds track brings racing back to its roots. The USAC Silver Crown cars and ARCA stock cars have always brought the crowd to the edge of its seat.’’Urish scored the biggest win of his career last season in the Ted Horn 100. Urish won when misfortune caused the leaders to drop out. He was running third with four laps left, then inherited the lead after Chris Windom and Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum ran out of fuel. Series director Andy Hillenburg has been building the car count, and a field of close to 30 cars is expected for this year’s race as he continues to build the series with more quality machinery and talented drivers.Schrader is a three-time Southern Illinois 100 winner who took the checkered flag last season in his Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet. He also won the race in 2006 and 2007. The racing veteran also has an ARCA win at the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile dirt track. Schrader took the victory last year after passing Tom Hessert just before a late caution flag. Schrader then held off Hessert the final two laps. Earlier this month, Kevin Swindell drove the Venturini Motorsports Zaxby Toyota to victory in the Central Illinois SuperChevyStores.com 100 at the Springfield Mile.On Aug. 31, the UMP modifieds hold heat races to qualify for the Bill Oldani Memorial on Monday.Tickets are on sale at the Du Quoin State Fair ticket office (618-542-1535) and Track Enterprises (217-764-3200). For each event, advance tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children 11 and under. Tickets sold on day of the race are $30 for adults and $10 for children 11 and under. Pit passes are sold race day only for $35. A two-day pass is $40.

Headin' out Tuesday morning bright and early with the camper to make the 6 hour trip to Southern Illinois and the Du Quoin State Fair. Gonna' take in the Jason Leffler Memorial midget race Tuesday night and then see what kind of mischief we can create on Rend Lake Wednesday through Sunday afternoon at which time we'll switch back to Magic Mile racing mode 'till Monday evening.

The Du Quoin State Fair racing weekend is the most anticipated racing trip we do all year!! Lets fill the place up with both cars and spectators!!

Can't hardly wait!!

To watch these cars run against the outside wall wide open , under the lights is as good as it gets on a dirt mile.

This will be 20 Horn Memorials in a row for us. I can't believe it's that many.

It seems only a couple years ago that we were making our first 6 hour trip to Southern Illinois and scrounging for a camping spot at the Fairgrounds campground in the middle of the night due to my wife's work schedules.

I never got to try the chocolate bacon, but I figured it might be good. Won't shy away from it.

dirt in ur beer 8/25/14 1:26 PM

I didn't "hate" it but still believe that my bacon and my chocolate should b on opposite sides of the plate. Maybe it's cause they serve it cold .

DiehardRaceFan 8/25/14 4:30 PM

Ahhh. I can see where it might not be as good. It needs to be fondue style with piping hot bacon.

Nothing like sitting in the big grandstand and watching the geese watch the cars practice while eating a Nutty Bar.."frozen ice cream dipped in choclate with nuts" or a frosty malt.

Now that's racin!

We usually get there early enough to ride the tram around the fairgrounds and see whats been happening in central Illinois, maybe launch a few frogs on the midway.

There is no better sound than hearing the champ cars at speed at Duquoin. Remember Chuck Gurney in the Plastic Express #30?....loud!

LEVI JONES RETURNS FOR SUNDAY’S “TED HORN 100”

One of USAC’s most proficient drivers, Levi Jones, will return to the cockpit Sunday night in the “Ted Horn 100” USAC Silver Crown race at the beautiful DuQuoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds.

The one-mile oval sits just an hour southeast of Jones’ present residence of Swansea, Ill. and about thesame distance southwest of his hometown of Olney, Ill. and his appearance will end his USAC hiatus, which began just over a year ago. Last year he recorded his third career Silver Crown victory in the prestigious Hoosier Hundred” in Indianapolis, Ind. and he has 28 career Sprint wins and four in the Midgets.

Jones will pilot the famed #56 entry for long-time car owner Galen Fox, the 1994 DuQuoin winner with Chuck Gurney driving. Fox also entered the recent Springfield race with driver Jon Stanbrough.

The 2010 and 2011 USAC Silver Crown Champion and five-time USAC National Sprint Car Champion looks forward to Sunday’s race: “It’s a race I’d like to win, for sure,” says Levi. “Not having competed full-time in a year or so, I feel like the miles (DuQuoin and Springfield) are ones where you can race and have some fun and I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to drive for Galen. “He’s definitely got a car that can win the race. DuQuoin has special meaning for me, so close to my home. We used to go to the races every year and I’ve been going there for more than 20 years now.”

Jones’ last USAC appearance came in last year’s “Eastern Storm” Sprint races in Pennsylvania and New Jersey where he recorded three “top-10s.”

He’ll face a formidable field of USAC Champions and Illinois veterans. They include USAC driving champions Bobby East, Tracy Hines, Dave Darland, Chris Windom, Russ Gamester, Kody Swanson, Robbie Ray, Jerry Coons Jr. and Caleb Armstrong, plus Illinois vets (Windom included) Patrick Lawson, A.J. Fike, Zach Daum, Steven Russell, Randy Bateman, Shane Cockrum and Chris Urish.

Urish shocked the series regulars with his “Ted Horn 100” victory a year ago, while Fike also has a couple of recent victories in the “Tony Bettenhausen 100” at the Illinois State Fairgrounds which returns to Springfield next week (September 7).

Practice at DuQuoin begins at 5 pm, followed by qualifications and the 100-mile “Ted Horn 100.”

He was, and still is one of my favorite singers! Got to see him race several times and got his autograph at the 1974 Firecracker 400, in which he finished eighth. I remember seeing Marty at DuQuoin in the preliminaries before one of the races. Don't believe he had been scheduled to appear, but due to his racing interest he showed up and the announcer interviewed him. Marty left us all too soon on Dec. 8, 1982 at the age of 57.
In an interesting sidenote, Ray Evernham found one of the cars that Marty raced at the Nashville Fairgrounds in a barn in Franklin, TN and restored it in an episode of "Americarna". Martys' son, Ronnie, drove the finished product around the track at Nashville, and the car was on display in downtown Nashville. Marty always painted his cars purple and yellow, and he favored Mopars on the short track, but I saw him race just before he died in an ex Junior Johnson prepared Buick that had been raced by Darrel Waltrip.

I saw a tuba player there infront of the crowd, possibly a little pre-race polka music.
