Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
I would bet this will be a topic at a lot of drivers meetings in the future. Sad something like this has to remind people
|
Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
So some dirt late model guy outta West Virginia has contacted Kevin's family in New York state and gotten the approval to do this?
I'm not sure I would want my deceased childs name to be part of a rule or online petition some passionate fan decided to create. Besides $1,000 fine isn't much of a deterrent to some people. Just my opinion. |
Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
I'm for something like this at all tracks, However, We all know its going to happen again and again and has for the 40+ years I've been going to races. Most of the time its a finger point from beside your wrecked car or a throw of a wheel or helmet and of course the good ole Number 1 signal. I've even seen a driver take a feet first flying leap into the cockpit of a moving modified and several attempts to punch a driver while in a moving car..
What can be done? Anyone besides track personnel without safety crew present on the racing surface. THE TRACK GOES RED! Red means stop in the safest possible manner, Not cruise to the track entrance, work area and certainly not pass a accident scene. A driver is not to leave his car until safety personnel present Only exception is drivers safety, Fire/leaking fluids. I got the feeling in some areas this will go further than just a track rule. While releases can be binding, I can see insurance companies mandating some things. It also might not be a bad Idea to have some reflective material on uniforms. A leg and arm stripe. Even if there is no malice involved a moving vehicle is more likely to see someone wearing reflective gear. Not sure on the petition, Does it get delivered to every driver, team and race track in the country? Chuck |
If you'd throw boxing gloves on them and let them go at it. All in front of the paying customers of course. Then you'd have no reason to get out and finger point.

Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
Got no problem with some sort of fine or suspension rule to deter going after other drivers. But how about we just throw the RED when a driver exits the car onto the racing surface without track personal there. Would rather sit through a needless red.

Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
Great idea. Much better way to spend our energy than the he said/she said nonsense that has been going on. What would be great is if we could get some of the sanctioning bodies to agree to this rule. It would give it more teeth.
While we are at it, can we please outlaw corner flag men and officials. I cringe every time I see an official get on the track on the back straight away. There can be no good that comes from having an official on the track. This is especially true that almost all tracks now require a Racever device. The only people going on the track should be emergency workers. I was at a track that had a corner worker die while on the track. It was absolutely a senseless tragedy. Two children were denied an opportunity to know their dad because he was on the track telling the drivers to pack in the high groove. |
Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
As long as Adrenaline runs through our veins, and overloads common sense, no rule is going to change this. Other than giving some Lawyer something else, to use against us. People should never make knee jerk reaction to tragic events. There's no rule that would have stop this young man from exiting his car, like thousands of other drivers have done. In today's society everyone wants more rules to protect us from ourselves. No rule can be made on a judgment, call where Money and safety are concern. Lawyer would have a field day the next time someone was burnt in a fire. Some may think this is wrong but how many millions did McDonald's pay in the hot coffee suit?

Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
Fulton Speedway in NY just announced a rule change on Monday, effective immediately.
"Under section III (Procedural Rules) of the Fulton and Brewerton “General and Safety Rules”, please note the following adjustment to rule number 10 that will be effective immediately." PROCEDURAL RULES 10. It is the goal of speedway management to maintain the safest possible racing conditions for all drivers. Only safety crews and wrecker crews are permitted on the track in the event of an accident. Pit crew members are not permitted on the track. Drivers are required to stay in their car in the event of an on-track incident. If a driver, for whatever reason, exits a car on the track during a caution period, the race will automatically be placed under a red flag and all cars will come to a complete stop. A driver may exit a car if requested by a safety crew member or if safety warrants in cases such as a fire. Drivers that exit a car without permission, for whatever reason, are subject to fine and/or suspension at the discretion of track management. http://fultonspeedway.com/safety-rules-bulletin/ |
Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
Come on folks, this kind of thing has been going on for decades. The only reason that any of us heard anything about this is, because such a highly known driver was involved. Even in NAPCAR, the drivers get out of their cars before the safety teams arrive. Stop and think of all the tracks that ran last Saturday night across this country. Do you honestly think that Kevin Ward was the only one that got out of his car to point a finger at another driver? This is a total tragedy for everyone involved but, I think any knee jerk reaction taken at this point may not be beneficial to the sport. Just my 2 cents

Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
Seen I think it was Tri City also rule, Leave car except for fire before safety crews, Automatic DQ for the event.

Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
Something else that hasn't really been discussed is the speed cars are going under caution. Yellow means SLOW DOWN. It doesn't mean half throttle, it doesn't mean continue your speed sliding through the corner, it doesn't mean maintain your speed until you see the reason for the caution. Week in and and week out you see all of those situations. Most tracks have caution lights at every corner and some down the straights. There is no excuse for a car to still be at a speed much higher than idle close to a lap after the caution flag is thrown. I realize you can't just slam on the brakes when the yellow comes out or you will get run over from behind, but you regularly see cars are still going too fast after going nearly a lap.

I am not trying to be devils advocate. But remember that night Donnie Ray Crawford saved Harli White's life. This rule is a knee jerk reaction that doesn't fit every circumstance.

APEX
When you throw in an intimidating and finger pointing and other gestures at others racers still traveling at caution lap speeds it should be understood and clarified to all involved. I would like to see a boxing ring set up in the infield. Equip it with 2 pairs of 20 0z boxing gloves. If a guy challenges his adversary and the other accepts let them go at it for 3 >>> 2 Minutes rounds in the infield between races, More entertainment for the fans and after 6 minutes wailing them big old heavy gloves they will have forgotten why they were there in the first place. Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
IMO the way the rule should read is that if a competitors car comes to a stop during a race he or she must remain in the vehicle till a safety crew person allows you to exit or if your in danger then you must stay within arms reach of your car or a reasonably safe distance.
While we are on the topic of safety I think that no one under the age of 21 should be allowed in the infield during a race and that all persons that are in the infield should be dressed in a reflective vest and hat. I have seen children in the infield standing in a turn while their father is standing in that turn as an official. I believe that if you are not a safety crew member then you should be within the confines of a walled off area in the infield or in the stands. Another things that bothers me is when there is a crash I see infield personnel take off running onto the racing surface before all the cars have stopped or come to an idle speed. I hope that race tracks around the country look at how they do business and change things before more people get hurt and the insurance industry either dictates how you run your track or they raise your rates till you go out of business. |
Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
Just an added note to the safety issues, at B-ton this year during Sprintweek, there was a photographer at the entrance of turn one, probably 5 feet away from the cars entering down low into the corner (of course with a zoom lens about 3 feet long too???)............stupid......stupid.........stup id.........it just takes one time for a new rule to be put into place.......
|
Is this congress? What's up with you guys wanting more rules. Keep your head on a swivel. When it comes down do it only one person is responsible for your safety.

Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
Agree or Disagree? (This is not the question).
Sometimes it's just better to be Proactive then Reactive to save (Insurance) what you have and not remember what you once had. |

I'm all for anything that makes the racers, team members, and fans safer.

Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
The Short Track Auto Racing Series (STARS), along with most sanctioning bodies across the country, will move forward to help with the safety of its drivers, fans and officials. The following is what we will implement this weekend at Kalamazoo Speedway. Stay In, Stay Safe.
5.26 Once a car has stopped on track, either because of an accident or mechanical failure, you must remove your steering wheel as an indication that there are no injuries, and then remain sitting in your car until a safety truck arrives next to your vehicle. The only reason to exit a race car before a safety truck arrives would be fire or the presence of liquids such as fuel water or oil. Under no circumstance are you to leave the area except to enter an ambulance or safety truck. If you wish to walk back to the pits you must be accompanied by a STARS official. Any advancement toward another competitor's moving race car, projecting equipment towards an on-track competitor, or any other action that jeopardizes the safety of officials or track personnel will result in a suspension or possible expulsion from all future STARS and STARS co-sanctioned events. |
Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
I'll let the tracks figure out what they plan to do. Im guessing a lot of Sanctions already have some kind of rule that covers it. I know USAC's was UNBUCKLE you cannot continue that race. Don't think it was for the entire event though.
My God, I went through Kroger this afternoon and two guys stocking the freezers were going on and on about how they think Tony tried to scare him. I said come on down to the Burg, See some real racin! :) And said I don't think Smoke even seen him and gave them a little insight as to the visuals of a winged sprint of seeing mostly forward and to the left and the side board hanging down. |
Charles, you know how it pains me to agree with you, but you are correct, most of the rules I've been privy to, say exactly that, unbuckle, and you're done for that race, heat feature, doesn't matter, now if your belts come unhooked before the event starts, most will allow you to stop, and have their safety people tuck you back in, and continue, but it may involve a move to the rear. Bob! I would also have to agree with you on your assessment of the topic that so much effects us all, that RF corner of a wing car is indeed a no see zone.

Re: Stay In, Stay Safe - The Kevin Ward Jr. Rule.
If you get out of your car and charge another drivers car FOR ANY REASON you should be DQed - not paid and removed from the track property IMMEDIATELY!!!
Drivers have got out of their cars for years and had no problems. |
Maybe the fine money should go to a scholarship fund in his name
