sprint week
Coming from PA and after the easrtern swing..... I am coming over from the dark side. Lol. Which weekend should I come out for? The first or the second? Side question.... which tracks have the better golf courses nearby and will I need to be at the track insanely early to get a good seat?? Thanks.

Re: sprint week
I don't think you can go wrong with either half. I do have to warn you though, you are in for a life changing experience.
|
Re: sprint week
Honestly either week you;ll see great racing I don't know about golf courses in the first week cuz not from there but second week there are 4 courses in Evansville which is just down the road from Haubstadt where Tri State Speedway is :6:

Re: sprint week
Come out for the first week and stay for the second. . . . .
|
I like the first one because the intensity is so high and the car counts tend to be alittle higher.
There are 4 courses in kokomo. |
Re: sprint week
My son and I are doing the first weekend of Gas City & Kokomo. The Jackslash videos from Kokomo look insanely good! On a related note, is Artie's Tenderloin in Kokomo worth a stop? Might do lunch there one day & try the Half Moon the other day. Never been there before & like to find the good local places to eat.

Re: sprint week
2 MUST-SEE Races: Kokomo(Never been there) and Haubstadt!!!...:6:

Hi! While we are on the subject of Sprint Week I would like to give a big shout out for the Express Inn! A great little lady works hard to make sure you have a nice clean place to stay! It isn't fancy but very nice! It is a straight shot from the track (Tri State) in Princeton. We have been staying there for a long time!
Phone # 812-386-1200. Her name is Priti. :) |
I always do the first weekend. Because their right, that drive home from Haubstadt to Eastern Pennsylvania "IS" life changing !!! I'll take Gas City, Lawrenceburg, Kokomo, over any weekend...Anywhere

They got the best Thunder cars don't they Pine.

Re: sprint week
ok, its official... getting set to do the 1st weekend.....dragging the daughter(10y.o.). That being said... this means I will be doing some "other" things while I am out there..lol. My plan is to stay in a hotel near gas... so questions are...Do I have to get to the tracks way before the gates open to get a proper seat?(driving from pa I don't want to not see) are there reserved seats or can you sit anywhere? how about lawn chair seating like on a hill or something? I read about the no driver shirt area at gas...what about kokomo or Lburg? lets see.....if anything else I missed feel free to educate me.... thanks.
|
I recommend getting to the track before gates open. The line to get in will be long, but ya gotta go early to mark off your seat. Bring a butt pad and a bungie cord for easy seat marking. There are no reserved seats sold in advance.
No lawn chairs seating available at GC, Kokomo. You will see a few at very top of grandstands at L-burg. An added bonus: after marking your seats at GC, buy a $1 50/50 for each of you and enjoy the pits up until the drivers meeting. A great, cheap way to see cars and stars up close. You can do this at the gate located near turn 4. There will be t-shirt sales at 4 or more trailers usually parked somewhere with easy fan access. Your gonna have a great time! |
Re: sprint week
thanks for the info..
|
If you are still thinking about golf to go along with some intense sprint car action I can comment on Kokomo area courses. Wildcat is very nice but a bit pricey (though very reasonable compared to courses near larger cities), Chippendale is a quality 27 hole course, the American Legion course is a good value and well kept for as much play as it receives. There is also a course west of town, Green Acres which is more rural though I haven't been there in a while so not sure what kind of shape it is in.
For a non-wing fan, ISW is as good as it gets. Enjoy. |
Re: sprint week
yeah, I am looking to play... but it would have to be someplace kid friendly or cheap... I don't want to pay a fortune for my daughter to play a few holes and ride in the cart...lol. I gotta tell ya...I am big time looking forward to this.....enough that I am skipping out on pa speedweek.......lol

The girlfriend n I did all of midget week .first night got there when gates opened to Save a seat but noticed a lot of spaces where 2 people could set left unused. The rest of the week we got there bout an 1/2 hr before hot laps and never had a problem getting a great seat . We like to sit up high , left of flag stand . Worst we did was Kokomo 5 rows down from top. Sat in the top row at Bloomington and 3 rows down at the burg. We r planning on doing the same for sprint week. I do have something bad to say about Kokomo though.... Do not under any circumstances buy their popcorn !!!! Worst popcorn I have EVER had !!!

Thanks Charles suggestion greatly appreciated. It's my 1st sprint week too , was merely passing on our midget week experience. School gets out in May in Illinois .
|
As much as u should avoid the popcorn I can't stress enough DO eat at the Half Moon in Kokomo ! We loved it . Best meal we had in the state of Indiana during midget week .

Re: sprint week
Any races on Monday or Tuesday? Other than visit the Indy 500 museum any other must see places? A friend of mine who lived in Indiana said I needed to visit Knawbone, he had a big smile on his face so I think he was kidding?
|
Re: sprint week
Gnawbone is between Columbus an Little Nashville Indiana on the way to Bloomington if coming from the east or south. Bunch of flea marketes and campgrounds.
Tuesday Ballou and crew put together a Charity Bowl in Brownsburg with door prizes, raffles and good plain fun for Cortey Cares Charity. |
Birdsboro, check your PM.

Re: sprint week
I know I'm repeating myself, but no one visiting Kokomo should miss the tour of the Kokomo Opalescent Glass Company (http://www.kog.com/). Mon-Fri @ 10am. It's only an hour or so. Kids will love it. So will adults.
|
Thanks... She says we're going .
|
The guy that sat behind us at Kokomo said that he had retired from there. Also said he browsed here occasionally.

Re: sprint week
The Nashville,Bean Blossom,Gnawbone area is very beautiful..I've been there several times on my Hog for the BluesFest and ABATE Party!..The area is a State Park with natural beauty and tree-lined highways..You should camp there if you have time...:32:

This is a great way for the fans to mix with the drivers and teams and the event has been very well attended since its inception. It is scheduled for Tuesday night, the 15th. |
Re: sprint week part II
to resurrect a post and not having to hunt all over the place. I would like to thank you all for the tips last year, i enjoyed gas and kokomo immensely!!! now on to this year... i can't make the first week, so i am going to concentrate on the second most specifically THAT, LPS, and Bloomington, with a possible game time decision of Paragon or Kings royal on the way home... although we very well could end up at Haubstadt. OK.. Now, all the good things to know about the tracks, where to sit, (lawn chair, blankets, bleacher seats) track food to eat, can i tent camp in the parking lot, if so where, hotel recomendations... i was planning to stay near TH or near bloomington maybe. Golf courses, things to keep a now 11 year old and possibly wife occupied(LOL) any sponsors i can support(food, lodging or entertainment wise). Ok that's it for now....
|
I stayed at the Motel 6 in Cloverdale last year for the Memorial Day MSCS shows and it was very convenient for THAT, LPS, and Bloomington. We actually left LPS after the races and caught 2nd feature at Paragon. THAT about 30 miles down I-70, LPS about 10(maybe) and Bloomington might've been about 45 minutes to an hour. Going out for midget week in about 2 weeks and staying at the same place. Clean hotel and like I said, conveniently located. Hope this helps!:6:
