Indianapolis 500

If you were to take all the previous winners of the Indy 500 and started them in a race at the Speedway, who would your top 5 be?

LRP36 5/24/14 5:45 PM

I would take Mears, Foyt, Vukovich, Parnelli and Louis Meyer

Would this mythical 500 be in today's modern, rear engine cars? Or would it be in old, front motored beasts? And if the combatants are going at it in roadsters, would the surface be pavement, or would our heroes be getting their teeth rattled on the bricks?

Re: Indianapolis 500

I would list my 5 drivers as Shaw. Vukovich, Foyt, Jones and Mears. But what about the rest of the great drivers over the years such as Meyer, Rose, B Unser, Unser Sr, Rutherford, Andretti, Unser Jr, Castroneves, Franchitti.

Re: Indianapolis 500

Bill Vukovich, A.J. Foyt, Jimmy Bryan, Mauri Rose, and the guy that put it in the corner when Mears backed off...Gordon Johncock.
There are two I loved but they never won a race, Loyd Ruby and George "Ziggy" Snyder.

Then you have to go with Foyt. The only one to win front and rear engine, bricks and pavement!

"Rocket" Rick Mears
Bill Vukovich
A.J. Foyt Jr.

Re: Indianapolis 500

I'll go nostalgic here:

The Cowboy, Jimmy Bryan. Smoked big cigars.
Bill Vukovich. Won two in a row and lost his life trying for the third.
Al Unser. Four time winner and for winning it in '78 the day before I left for bootcamp.
Mark Donohue. A guy who could have accomplished everything in motorsports until his life was cut short
Jules Goux, 1913. How can you NOT like a guy who had a glass of champagne at every pit stop? Imagine what it would have been like watching the 500 over 100 years ago!

And, if I may, even though he never won it, I'd like to give Lloyd Ruby a provisional. Always loved the patriotic red, white, and blue Mongoose.

Great topic. Thanks for starting the thread.

If we give Hard Luck Lloyd a provisional, should we put Michael Andretti in our mythical field as well?
