Big POWRi Weekend at Jacksonville and Macon

https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...96921501_n.jpg

It is a big weekend for open wheel racing in Central Illinois as the Lucas Oil POWRi National Midgets and Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series make 2 exciting stops this weekend. Friday night, Jacksonville Speedway plays host to the first of 2 exciting events. Jacksonville is always an exciting time with great facilities and concessions, as well as great racing.

On Saturday night, the midgets, a class that was one of the original classes at Macon Speedway back in 1946, makes it's first appearance of 2014 as the Lucas Oil POWRi National Midget Series comes to town to tackle the 1/5 mile bullring. Macon is known for great side by side racing and incredible slidejobs, plus the delicious Polish Sausage is one of the staples (although ALL of the concessions are pretty darn good).

Rising star Christopher Bell leads the Lucas Oil National Midget Series points standings with 760 points. Tanner Thorson is second with 600, followed by defending series champ Zach Daum of Pocahantas, Ill., with 590. Close Midget and Micro Point Standings Show that the 2014 POWRi Championship Battle is On
Monday, April 21st 2014

Teammates Christopher Bell and Tanner Thorson are parked first and second in the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget point standings four races into the 2014 season. With 760 points, Bell has a comfortable 160-point lead over Thorson going into the events scheduled at Jacksonville Speedway and Macon Speedway this weekend. The gap between second and third, however, is much smaller. Thorson has only a 10-point lead over 2013 POWRi midget champion Zach Daum. Bell and Thorson's third teammate, Rico Abreu, is currently fourth in the midget point standings and trails only 40 points behind Daum.

After two events, there is a tie for first in the POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Micro point standings. Jeremy Camp and 2013 POWRi micro champion Nathan Benson have both acquired 380 points after the micro series' first two races of the 2014 season at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, IN. Camp and Benson will have to hold off Aaron Andruskevitch at both Jacksonville and Macon this weekend if they want to stay at the top of the micro point standings. Andruskevitch is currently third in the micro point standings and trails Camp and Benson by a mere 30 points.

Both the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets and the POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micros are scheduled to run at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, IL on Friday, April 25th. The ¼ mile high-banked oval hosted three POWRi events in 2013. Shane Cockrum, Kyle Larson, and Rico Abreu took midget feature wins while Dereck King, Mike Dicely, and Cale Thomas came out on top in the micros at Jacksonville Speedway last year. The April 25th event will be the first of four times that POWRi will visit the Jacksonville, IL track during the 2014 season. Jacksonville Speedway will host the opening night of the POWRi Illinois SPEED Week as well as the 2014 midget season finale.

Following Friday night at Jacksonville Speedway, both the midgets and micros will visit Macon Speedway in Macon, IL on Saturday, April 26th. After getting rained out on April 5th, the April 26th race will mark the first of five times that both the POWRi midgets and micros will visit the 1/5 mile high-banked oval during 2014. Macon Speedway will host the prestigious Dana Godfrey Memorial as well as the third night of the POWRi Illinois SPEED Week. A POWRi event at Macon Speedway traditionally attracts a field of midgets that puts on an exciting show. Fans saw Danny Stratton, Christopher Bell, Andrew Felker, and Brady Bacon win hard-fought midget feature events during the 2013 season. In the micros, Nathan Benson and Dereck King both nabbed one while Cale Thomas claimed two feature wins at the track in 2013.

Current 2014 POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Point Standings (Top 10): 1. Christopher Bell (760) 2. Tanner Thorson (600) 3. Zach Daum (590) 4. Rico Abreu (550) 5. Tyler Thomas (530) 6. Parker Price-Miller (340) 7. Alex Sewell (240) 8. Colten Cottle (235) 9. Justin Peck (225) 10. Darren Hagen (220)

Current 2014 POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Point Standings (Top 10): 1. Jeremy Camp (380) 2. Nathan Benson (380) 3. Aaron Andruskevitch (350) 4. Nick Bailey (260) 5. Tyler Nelson (250) 6. Andrew Peters (210) 7. Jake Neuman (210) 8. Jason Harms (170) 9. Zac Taylor (160) 10. Jeremy Zumwalt (130)

I really enjoyed seeing these guys at kokomo, they put on a whale of a show, sure would like to see some tracks closer to home bring them in for big two day, or even a big single day show, hint, hint, Lawrenceburg and eldora:9:

Alex Bright will be in the RFMS #3 at Jacksonville on Friday. He didn't say anything about Macon on Saturday though.

Jacksonville is one of the best midget tracks around. Excellent racing every time I have seen the midgets there. It is a good track in general, but the midgets are great there. Anyone know if Michael Pickens will be there or is he still staying out west?

Saw him win a race at J-ville a few years back with a 4 wheels in the cushion pass on the last lap. He had a hard time getting out of the car cause his b**ls were in the way. It was the best bit of racing I think I have ever seen in person in any car at any level.

I thought I read where Pickens was going to do the whole POWRi schedule earlier this year. Cant remember where I read it though...Pre Senior moment....

Maybe Alex is in the 2nd car. Since Windom might be running USAC this weekend. Just a thought. Lloyd

I seem to think that I should know what that means, but now that I'm post-senior, I just don't remember.:15:

Re: Big POWRi Weekend at Jacksonville and Macon

It certainly was a pre senior moment today. It was the entire USAC midget series schedule that Pickens is planning on doing, not the entire POWRi midget schedule.

I did see that Alex Bright will be running tomorrow night at Jacksonville in one of the RFMS midgets though.

Have a little wet stuff moving through Jacksonville this evening, but it doesn't appear to be much to worry about. Looks like it will end by 10pm, then a beautiful, beautiful day on tap for Friday. I'd plan on loading the cars and heading to Jacksonville Friday.

I've missed the last 2 years early season POWRi race at J-ville, then got up the next morning and read about it,and how many cars were there, and kicked myself for not going over. This year I am heading over as soon as I get out of work today, and then Macon tomorrow, and THAT on the way home.

After seeing a race like that one last night, I cant imagine driving past Macon, where there will be more of the same action as you saw at Jacksonville.

Re: Big POWRi Weekend at Jacksonville and Macon

POWRi at the central IL bullrings of Jacksonville, Macon & Lincoln are all pretty much a guaranteed great show. Seen the midgets several times at those tracks and not seen a bad one yet.

Has there ever been more "fortitude" packed into a smaller package than Rico? He gets after it. Fun to watch!

Re: Big POWRi Weekend at Jacksonville and Macon

Well no offence to POWRi, but ya might say we like spreading our love for racing around. I was hoping to meet up with ya Andrew. We sat just to the right of the platform in front. Maybe 8 rows up between the Moughan an Beard Sign. We did see Steve Wendal and his wife who sat in front of us. Was a great nite of racing, and I'm sure Gail and I will be back for at least 1 more show this yr. So what ever track your attending 2nite every1 be safe and enjoy. Lloyd

Re: Big POWRi Weekend at Jacksonville and Macon

That was an incredible feature. I thought Rico might cause a calamity because he was driving so hard. I'll give him credit, though. He kept it on it's wheels. Chris Bell is a smoother driver with incredible talent. I almost feel lucky to be from central Illinois to see this level of racing at our local tracks.

Re: Big POWRi Weekend at Jacksonville and Macon

Jacksonville, IL. - Christopher Bell held off repeated attempts by his fellow Keith Kunz Motorsports teammates Rico Abreu and Tanner Thorson to take home the victory at the semi-banked, ¼ mile Jacksonville Speedway in the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets Series and Joe B. Miller used lap traffic to keep second-place finisher Scott Sawyer at bay long enough to win his first POWRi Speedway Motors Outlaw Micro Series feature of 2014.

Christopher Bell of Norman, Oklahoma started on the outside front row, but it would be his Keith Kunz Motorsports teammate and pole sitter Tanner Thorson of Minden, Nevada who would take the point at the drop of the green flag with a commanding lead. Holding off challenges from native Californian Rico Abreu, following two yellows Thorson would lead Abreu, Tyler Thomas, Christopher Bell, and Alex Bright into heavy lap traffic until Brandon Waelti's nasty flip brought out by the only red of the feature, halting the battle.

After the red, Bell would overcome Tyler Thomas and the trio of Thorson, Abreu, and Bell driving Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports' Toyota-powered Bullets would engage in a tight battle filled with thrilling slide jobs and lap cars in the mix. "On the restart, Rico slid me so I knew I had to step it up, I knew my teammate was behind me," explained Tanner Thorson. In the mix of Thorson and Abreu's battle, Bell was able to sneak by. "We got racing in traffic and I tried getting Tanner [Thorson] for the lead a few times and Christopher [Bell] snuck by," explained Rico Abreu.

In the end, it would be Christopher Bell taking the victory, followed to the line by Rico Abreu and your pole sitter Tanner Thorson, making this the second record event for Keith Kunz Motorsports sweeping the podium. "It was a really fun race," explained winner Christopher Bell. "It's definitely an accomplishment for Keith Kunz Motorsports. Night in and night out we're always three of the best cars. It really is cool to be able to run for this team."

Driving his Speed Shack Performance-powered Hyper Chassis, Joe B. Miller was able to capitalize on Aaron Andruskevitch's misfortune and craftily held off the Engler-injected Sawyer Chassis piloted by Sawyer Chassis' own Scott Sawyer of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma to take home his first POWRi Speedway Motors Outlaw Micro Series win of 2014. "We had a good run, just not enough tonight for Joe B.," explained Scott Sawyer. "It is a very tough series and we like coming to the POWRi races. They put on a good show, lots of good competition."

Nic Harris of Atlanta, Illinois took the third position in his Yamaha-powered Stallard Chassis. "We're happy with a top three," explained Harris. "Lap traffic always helps."

Miller inherited the lead 3 laps in after current race leader Aaron Andruskevitch of Riverton, Illinois threw a chain on the restart, ending his night and bid for the win. "The plan was to get up front and run with them," explain Joe B. Miller. "Aaron took off really well and had a chain break. It sucks to win one like that, but we'll take it."

POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series feature results (30 laps): 1. 71 - Chris Bell 2. 97 - Rico Abreu 3. 67 - Tanner Thorson 4. 91T - Tyler Thomas 5. 55 - Nick Knepper 6. 3F - Alex Bright 7. 5D - Zach Daum 8. 50 - Daniel Adler 9. 9P - Parker Price-Miller 10. 57D - Daniel Robinson 11. 2st - Danny Stratton 12. 88 - Terry Babb 13. 5C - Colten Cottle 14. 25 - Jake Blackhurst 15. 17 - Derek Holmwood 16. 91 - Dereck King 17. 4 - Scott Hatton 18. 11C - Chet Gehrke 19. 56 - Darren Hagen 20. 6A - David Gough 21. 15 - Brandon Waelti 22. 57F - Andrew Felker 23. 911 - Ronnie Gardner
